Student Regent and USC Main Campus President Alpha Mae Marquita has formally reached out to the Provincial Government of Northern Samar to seek support for a graduation assistance program for students who may graduate in Academic Year 2025โ€“2026.

SR Marquita proposed the initiative in recognition of the possible graduation-related costs that students may face. While these expenses are not fixed, they can still place pressure on students and their families.

The proposal expresses hope for the Provincial Governmentโ€™s support in preparing assistance if needed. It also outlines a simple and organized approach to ensure timely delivery.

Through this effort, the OSR continues to represent student concerns, work with government partners, and advance the welfare of UEP students.

Student Regent Alpha Mae Marquita has sent a letter to President Ultra on the collection of panel honoraria during thesis and capstone proposal presentations and final defenses.

The shift to digital submission helps reduce costs but panel honoraria expenses during the proposal and defense stages remain a concern for many students.

Many have already completed their defenses. This move is for those who have not yet, and for future batches.

Student Regent Marquitaโ€™s proposal is institutional support: the University will pay for the panel honoraria, putting an end to the current practice where students shoulder the costs.

If not yet possible, Student Regent Marquita calls for student-centered guidelines to keep costs fair, transparent, and manageable across all campuses.

The OSR has submitted two proposed policies to the University President and Board of Regents:

โ€ข University-wide Gender Policy
โ€ข University Policy on Free Expression

These are grounded in consultations with you, our fellow students, and stakeholders across the UEP System.

What these proposed policies aim:

โ€ข Protect dignity and equal participation of all students, regardless of gender identity and expression
โ€ข Affirm studentsโ€™ rights to expression, peaceful assembly, and lawful collective action

The OSR also recommended interim guidance while these are under review:

โ€ข No discriminatory enforcement of dress codes based on SOGIE. No denial of entry, absences, or exclusion on this basis
โ€ข Uphold free expression, subject to reasonable and content-neutral rules. Address concerns through dialogue and support, not punishment.

These measures aim to protect studentsโ€™ rights, access to education, and participation in campus life.

The OSR remains committed to advancing student welfare and rights. More updates soon.

Recent reports confirm that fuel prices in the country are expected to increase in the coming days due to developments in the international oil market. In some areas, transportation companies have already raised fares. Some have also reduced or cancelled trips as they respond to higher operating costs.

These developments may soon affect our province. An increase in fuel prices can lead to higher transportation fares and fewer available trips. This situation may place an added burden on many of our fellow UEP students who travel daily from different municipalities and barangays to attend classes.

Many of us rely on daily public transportation to pursue their education. Even small increases in transportation costs can make it harder for our fellow UEP students to attend classes regularly. Student access to education must remain protected, especially during situations that directly affect mobility and daily expenses.

The Office of the Student Regent recognizes this concern and is taking steps to closely monitor the situation together with the Federation of Student Councils and campus student leaders. As representatives of the student body, we will ensure that the concerns of UEP students are heard and properly addressed.

The following actions will be undertaken:
1. Officers of the University Student Council from the Main, Catubig, and Laoang campuses will gather updates from students regarding transportation conditions, fare increases, and other commuting concerns.

2. Students who are experiencing transportation difficulties are encouraged to report their situation through their respective University Student Council or College Student Council so that these concerns can be properly documented.

3. The Office of the Student Regent will maintain regular coordination with the Federation of Student Councils to consolidate reports and assess the situation across the three campuses.

4. Verified concerns will be formally communicated to the university administration. If transportation conditions begin to significantly affect the ability of students to attend classes, the Office of the Student Regent is prepared to raise the matter with the University President and discuss possible academic adjustments, including temporary remote or online modes of instruction if necessary.

We will remain vigilant and responsive as this situation develops.

We encourage all UEPians to remain informed, exercise care in their travels, and continue supporting fellow students during this time.

Thank you.

SR BALLICUD REQUESTS BOR TO HOLD MOMENT OF SILENCE FOR STUDENTโ€™S DEATH

In a letter sent to UEP Board of Regents Chair and CHED Commissioner Aldrin Darilag yesterday, Student Regent Seary Anne Ballicud requested the BOR to hold in its meeting today a moment of silence for the student who committed su***de few days ago.

โ€œThe dreams and hopes not only of one student but his whole family have now become impossible. I implore the university and this Board to not waste another valuable hope and dream of the society and a better Philippines,โ€ SR Ballicud said. โ€œLet us address the pressing issues that concern our students, the largest stakeholder of the university. Now.โ€

In the same letter, SR Ballicud further said that the โ€œunstable internet connectivity highlights the weak IT infrastructure that the University Student Council through its resolutions pointed out as a reason for the postponement of the opening of classes and a very important factor for the adaptation of blended learning in the university.โ€
