🧪𝗕𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗞𝗜𝗡𝗚: The 2026 Nobel Prize in Chemistry goes to Henri B. Kagan and Kenso Soai for discovering non-linear effects and autocatalysis in asymmetric organic synthesis.

To understand it, start with your hands. Many molecules come in two forms that are mirror images of each other, like left and right hands. Your body's amino acids come in two mirrored forms too, but every protein in your cells is built from only one of them. Life is "homochiral," and for over a century chemists could not explain how one mirror image could come to dominate.

In a normal reaction that can make both mirror images, you get a 50/50 mix, like flipping a fair coin. Kagan discovered something strange: under the right conditions, a small imbalance in the starting mix can be amplified into a much bigger imbalance in the product, so the reaction stops behaving like a fair coin.

Soai then built the ultimate version: an autocatalytic reaction where the product is its own catalyst. Once one mirror image gets slightly ahead, it makes more of itself and crowds out its twin, and by 2003 he achieved a reaction that produced essentially only ONE mirror image. Outside of life itself, no one had done that before.

Why should we care:
• 💊 Pharmaceuticals. Drugs interact with chiral targets in your body, so usually only one mirror image treats the disease while the other can be useless or harmful. Kagan and Soai's work is decisive for designing the reactions used to manufacture single-mirror-image medicines.
• 🧬 Origin of life. The Soai reaction is the best lab model we have for how life's one-handed chemistry could have emerged spontaneously from a random starting point.
• 🔬 Amplification thinking. "Non-linear effects" show up across catalysis and self-assembly; this prize is a masterclass in how tiny biases snowball into big outcomes.

So the next time you take a chiral drug and it just... works, thank the chemists who figured out how chemistry picks a mirror image. 🪞

To our sponsors, thank you for investing not only in our needs during CS Days 2026, but also in our future. Your generosity gives us opportunities and hope.

As students, we promise to honor your support by doing our best in our studies and, someday, by paying your kindness forward. When we graduate, we hope to help others the way you have helped us, so that your generosity continues to create an impact far beyond our own lives.

CSA’s success is not ours alone. Your kindness will stay with us long after CS Days 2026, and long after we graduate.

As curtains close on 𝐂𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐠𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐒𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐃𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔, our hearts are overflowing with gratitude, pride, and love for this community. Taking home 𝗙𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲 is an incredible milestone, but the true victory lies in the beautiful bond we shared through every single moment of this journey.

Behind every win were sleepless nights, endless rehearsals, aching muscles, and a family that refused to give up on each other. We didn't just show up; we poured our whole hearts into every second.

To everyone who made this beautiful chapter possible, 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒏𝒌 𝒚𝒐𝒖. We carry immense pride for our champions who set the bar high and inspired us all—our spectacular 𝗠𝗮𝘀𝗰𝗼𝘁 and 𝗕𝗼𝗼𝘁𝗵 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺𝘀 who brought home the 𝑪𝒉𝒂𝒎𝒑𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒔𝒉𝒊𝒑, and 𝗖𝗵𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗝𝗼𝗵𝗻 𝗚𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗮𝗴𝗮, who gracefully claimed 1𝒔𝒕 𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆 as 𝑴𝒔. 𝑮𝒂𝒚. Our hearts swell for our 𝗖𝗵𝗲𝗲𝗿𝗱𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺, who left everything on the floor to secure a beautiful 3𝒓𝒅 𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆 finish.

We celebrate the sheer grit and passion of our athletes from the 𝗪𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻'𝘀 and 𝗠𝗲𝗻'𝘀 𝗩𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝘆𝗯𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺𝘀 and 𝗠𝗲𝗻'𝘀 𝗕𝗮𝘀𝗸𝗲𝘁𝗯𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺, who fought tirelessly until the final buzzer. Our deepest appreciation goes to the visionaries of 𝗧𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝗖𝗵𝗲𝗺𝗻𝗶𝘃𝗮𝗹, 𝗧𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝗪𝗲𝗱𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗕𝗼𝗼𝘁𝗵, and 𝗧𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝗣𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗮𝗻𝘁, whose artistry turned concepts into pure magic. And to our incredible 𝗖𝗵𝗲𝗲𝗿𝗱𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗽𝘀𝗺𝗲𝗻—you literally carried our dreams on your shoulders. Your silent hard work behind the scenes could never have done any of this without you.

None of this would have been possible without the visionary leadership at our helm. We extend our deepest gratitude to our 𝐂𝐒𝐀 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭, 𝗥𝗲𝘃 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝗿𝗼𝗲 𝗗𝘂𝗿𝗺𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗼. Thank you for guiding us with patience, strength, and unwavering faith. Your dedication paved the way, and your leadership truly led us straight to this victory.

To every student, cheerleader, athlete, and supporter who lost their voice cheering from the sidelines—this 𝗙𝗜𝗥𝗦𝗧 𝗣𝗟𝗔𝗖𝗘 finish belongs to all of us. 𝑻𝒉𝒂𝒏𝒌 𝒚𝒐𝒖 for showing everyone the true definition of 𝑪𝒉𝒆𝒎𝒊𝒔𝒕𝒓𝒚.
