We, the College of Veterinary Medicine Student Council (CVMSC), stand with The Pillar and the University Student Council in upholding every studentโs right to speak, question, participate, and be heard.
Student voices, questions, and criticism are part of a university community. Student representation must listen to legitimate concerns and provide space for disagreement without intimidation or retaliation. Likewise, campus publications must be able to inform the student body, raise questions, and discuss matters that affect the university community while exercising their responsibilities with fairness and accountability.
The events surrounding the banner carrying the calls to โJunk HB 9414โ and โJunk HB 9861โ brought these principles into focus. The banner was removed by university administration, after which students, The Pillar, the University Student Council, and security personnel became involved in a confrontation over the banner. Whatever the circumstances, moments of disagreement should be addressed through dialogue and respect rather than escalation.
The CVMSC also wishes to clarify what followed the cancellation of the activity. Our members packed up our materials and cleaned the area specifically designated for the Council. After the area had already been cleared, garbage was reportedly thrown onto the same spot. Regardless of who was responsible, this should not create the impression that the Council or its volunteers failed to fulfill their responsibilities. The efforts of those who stayed behind to clean should not be disregarded or misrepresented.
We are likewise concerned by incidents in which security personnel were observed filming students without their consent, as well as reports from students who felt harassed or intimidated. We recognize the need to maintain safety and order, but these responsibilities must be carried out with respect for studentsโ dignity and rights.
Accountability must apply to everyone. Disagreement should not be treated as disobedience, and raising legitimate concerns should not result in intimidation or retaliation. Genuine dialogue requires not only allowing students to speak, but also listening to them.
We stand for a university where students can speak without fear, question without being condemned, and participate without being silenced.

We do not speak to create division. We speak because we are part of this university.
We will continue to raise our voices, defend the freedom to speak and to be heard, and stand for a university where students are not silenced for expressing what they believe.
Our voices belong to us, and they deserve to be heard.
