The brethen of Maharlika Masonic Lodge No. 180, along with the sojourning brethren of Masonic District R2 - Isabela Central are commemorating our Brother Dr. José Rizal on the 129th anniversary of his martyrdom: A visionary who sacrificed his life for the freedom of the Filipino people. His courage, intellect, and unwavering commitment to justice continue to inspire us in our pursuit of liberty and equality.
In 1883, José Rizal joined the Acacia Lodge of the Gran Oriente de España.
Rizal's liberal beliefs aligned with the ideals of the Freemasons.
In 1889, Rizal became a member of La Solidaridad, and a certificate dated May 25, 1890, confirmed his membership, bearing his pseudonym “Dimasalang.”
A Masonic certificate issued on November 15, 1890, with the motto Liberté, égalité, fraternité, certified Rizal's elevation to Master Mason in the La Solidaridad Lodge.
While El Filibusterismo was being printed in Ghent, Belgium, Rizal was accepted into the Temple de l’Honneur et de l’Union, a lodge in Paris, France. On February 15, 1892, he was promoted to Master Mason.
