𝐂𝐀𝐖𝐀𝐘𝐀𝐍, 𝐌𝐚𝐬𝐛𝐚𝐭𝐞 – Demonstrating its commitment to community engagement and educational development, the Teacher Education Institute successfully implemented a community immersion program through its Social Laboratory Course across six identified barangays in Cawayan, Masbate—𝐒𝐚𝐧 𝐕𝐢𝐜𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐞, 𝐌𝐚𝐢𝐡𝐚𝐨, 𝐏𝐨𝐛𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐢𝐨𝐧, 𝐃𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐬𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐚, 𝐁𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐚, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐌𝐚𝐡𝐚𝐲𝐚𝐡𝐚𝐲.

As part of the initiative, the institute, under the leadership of 𝐌𝐬. 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐥𝐚 𝐋. 𝐀𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐞 and 𝐌𝐫. 𝐀𝐧𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐧𝐲 𝐕. 𝐀𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐧, conceptualized and carried out an extension project entitled “𝐁𝐀𝐒𝐀-𝐁𝐀𝐓𝐀: 𝐀 𝟏𝟎-𝐃𝐚𝐲 𝐄𝐚𝐫𝐥𝐲 𝐋𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐒𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲𝐭𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐄𝐱𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐦” under 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐈𝐒𝐓𝐎𝐑𝐘𝐀. The program aimed to address early literacy needs among young children while strengthening community participation in education.

Designed for children aged four to six years old, the BASA-BATA Program provided developmentally appropriate literacy interventions that integrated alphabet recognition, phonemic awareness, story comprehension, and oral language development. Learning activities included local folktales, interactive storytelling sessions, songs, games, and creative exercises that encouraged active participation among learners.

The program sought to help children recognize uppercase and lowercase letters, develop phonemic awareness through rhymes and word-play activities, engage in storytelling and story-retelling exercises, sequence story events using visual aids, and demonstrate school readiness skills such as attentive listening, oral communication, and classroom participation.

Implementation of the program was led primarily by third-year Bachelor of Secondary Education major in English (BSEd English) and Bachelor of Elementary Education (BEEd) students. Serving as student-extensionists, they facilitated learning sessions within their assigned communities and ensured that activities were conducted according to the project’s learning framework and timeline. Their involvement provided valuable opportunities to apply pedagogical theories and teaching strategies in real-world community settings.

To assess the effectiveness of the intervention, monitoring and evaluation activities were conducted throughout the implementation period. The project also benefited from community support. An 𝐚𝐧𝐨𝐧𝐲𝐦𝐨𝐮𝐬 𝐝𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐫 𝐞𝐱𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐝 𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 to student-extensionists assigned in Barangay Divisoria. The funds were used to purchase school supplies and lunch boxes for participating children, helping increase learner motivation and enhance the overall learning experience.
Parents and guardians expressed appreciation for the initiative, citing noticeable improvements in their children's interest in reading, language development, and confidence in participating in educational activities. Many parents welcomed the opportunity for their children to access structured literacy sessions within their own communities and acknowledged the program's contribution to school readiness.

Implemented from 𝐅𝐞𝐛𝐫𝐮𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐭𝐨 𝐌𝐚𝐲 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔, the BASA-BATA Program recorded a 𝐜𝐮𝐦𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝟏,𝟒𝟐𝟐 𝐜𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐛𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐜𝐫𝐨𝐬𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐢𝐱 𝐛𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐚𝐲𝐬. The success of the BASA-BATA Program highlights the Teacher Education Institute’s dedication to responsive community extension services. By addressing early literacy needs, fostering collaboration among faculty members, student-extensionists, parents, and community stakeholders, and providing experiential learning opportunities for future educators, the program has made a meaningful contribution to the educational development of young children in the municipality of Cawayan, Masbate.

DEBESMSCAT Cawayan Campus Equips 46 Learners with School Supplies in Pre-School Year Outreach

CAWAYAN, MASBATE | June 4, 2026 — Just days ahead of the new school year opening on June 8, the DEBESMSCAT Cawayan Campus successfully conducted a community outreach program, distributing essential school supplies to 46 young learners of different grade levels at Purok 7, Sitio Kalubihan in Barangay Divisoria.

Made possible by a generous cash donation from an anonymous benefactor, the initiative aimed to equip children with the resources they need for their upcoming classes while fostering early literacy development. Alongside the educational kits, volunteers also distributed snacks to the children and local community members.

The outreach serves as a core component of the Social Laboratory for the campus's Teacher Education Institute (TEI) students. The activity is deeply rooted in Project ISTORYA: BASA BATA, an educational intervention specifically designed to develop the foundational reading and literacy skills of Cawayanon youth.

The project was spearheaded by Mr. Anthony V. Alimonsurin, Extension Program Chairperson, and Ms. Carla Amarille-Velarde, BSEd Department Head. They were joined by a dedicated delegation from the campus, including: Faculty & Staff: Mr. Lean L. Manlangit and Mr. Alberto B. Luzong, III. Non-Teaching Personnel: Ms. Juvy C. Retuya, Ms. Rosemarie I. Alba, Ms. Judy-Ann D. Mesia, Ms. Arene Joy T. Pepito, and Ms. Emie M. Manucan. TEI Student Volunteers: Ms. Elgen V. Ardiano, Mr. Jerom A. Peraan, Ms. Lilibeth B. Sumarago, Mr. Sandey C. Abayon, Mr. Fernando B. Dela Rama, Ms. Eva Mae R. Toñacao, and Mr. Joverson O. Inso.

The DEBESMSCAT Cawayan Campus community expressed its profound gratitude to the anonymous donor for funding the initiative. Through collaborative efforts and community support, local learners are given the tools and encouragement they need to succeed in their educational journey.
