Before the start of the second semester, the CNU Kinesthetics Department had the opportunity to learn and experience the fundamentals of Eskrima/Kali/Arnis under the guidance of Doce Pares HQ instructor and our colleague, Mr. Kurtjohn T. Cristobal.

This learning experience aims to equip us with valuable skills and knowledge that we can share with our students as part of our PATHFIT 4 course, promoting fitness through Filipino Martial Arts.

Our sincere gratitude to Doce Pares Multi-System and to GM Gerald Caรฑete for welcoming us, sharing their FMA system, and allowing us to use their facilities and equipment.

Andam! Yuko!

A growing body of scientific evidence continues to highlight the mental-health consequences of excessive sugar consumption. A recent study published in Frontiers in Nutrition by researchers Niusha Kasayan, Alireza Hashemi, Fereshteh Salari, Maryam Balaghi, Atieh Mirzababaei, and colleagues examined thousands of adults and found a clear association between high sugar intake and increased risks of depression and anxiety. Their research explains that large amounts of added sugar can cause rapid blood-sugar spikes followed by sharp crashes, disrupting energy levels and contributing to persistent fatigue. Over time, these fluctuations, combined with sugar-related inflammation in the brain, may elevate the likelihood of developing depressive symptoms.

The authors emphasize that the impact of sugar extends beyond physical health, noting that modern dietary patterns with high consumption of sweetened foods and beverages can directly influence emotional stability. According to the team, inflammation triggered by excessive sugar can interfere with neurotransmitter function, potentially affecting mood regulation and stress response. Their findings support emerging global recommendations urging people to reduce added sugar as part of maintaining mental well-being. The study underscores an important message: monitoring sugar intake is not only essential for metabolic health but also for protecting long-term emotional resilience.

Recent studies, most notably a large-scale 2024 meta-analysis published in โ€œThe BMJโ€ suggest that dancing may be more effective than antidepressants for treating depression. Dancingโ€™s superiority stems from its holistic nature, combining several therapeutic elements simultaneously and without the side effects of medication.

KEY MECHANISMโ€™S OF DANCINGโ€™S EFFECTIVENESS:

๐Ÿ“‘Neurochemical Release: Like other forms of exercise, dancing triggers the release of โ€œfeel-goodโ€ neurotransmitters such as endorphins, dopamine, and serotonin, which naturally boost mood and reduce stress.

๐Ÿ“‘Mind-Body Connection and Mindfulness: Dancing engages both the mind and body, which helps to break cycles of negative rumination (repetitive negative thoughts) by focusing attention on the present moment and the rhythm of the music. This is a core component of somatic therapy.

๐Ÿ“‘Emotional Expression: Dance provides a non-verbal avenue for emotional release and self-expression, which can be particularly helpful for individuals who struggle to articulate their feelings in traditional talk therapy settings.

๐Ÿ“‘Social Interaction and Connection: Many forms of dancing involve a social or group component, which helps combat feelings of isolation and builds a sense of community and belongingโ€”major contributors to mental well-being.

๐Ÿ“‘Physical Health Benefits: In addition to mental health benefits, dancing improves cardiovascular health, enhances cognitive functions, and boosts self-esteem, contributing to overall well-being.

๐Ÿ“‘Lack of Side Effects: Unlike antidepressant medications, which can have side effects like weight gain, insomnia, or nausea, dancing offers a natural approach with only positive physical benefits.

๐Ÿšถโ€โ™€๏ธ A daily walk does more than you think.

Walking can cut the effect of obesity genes, reduce breast cancer risk, and strengthen your immune system.

It may be one of the most accessible forms of exercise, but its benefits go far beyond what most people realize.

According to Harvard Health, walking doesnโ€™t just support general wellnessโ€”it delivers some truly surprising health perks. For instance, walking briskly for about an hour a day can cut the influence of obesity-promoting genes in half, according to a study involving over 12,000 people.

Other research shows that a 15-minute walk can curb cravings for sugary snacks like chocolate, especially during stressful moments.

These subtle but powerful effects highlight how even modest amounts of walking can rewire habits and improve overall health.

Thereโ€™s more: women who walk seven or more hours a week have a 14% lower risk of breast cancer, and walking also helps reduce joint pain and prevent arthritis by strengthening key muscles and lubricating the joints.

During cold and flu season, regular walkers experience fewer sick days and milder symptoms, thanks to improved immune function.

Whether you're looking to manage weight, tame cravings, reduce disease risk, or simply stay active as you age, walking may truly be โ€œthe closest thing we have to a wonder drug.โ€
