Mi Primera Inspiración: A Mother’s Love

Before Dr. José Rizal became the hero whose words helped awaken a nation, he was first a son deeply shaped by his mother, Doña Teodora Alonso.

Mi Primera Inspiración, traditionally regarded as Rizal’s first poem, was written when he was about fourteen years old while studying at the Ateneo Municipal de Manila. At an age when he was learning language, literature, and poetry, his first known poem was not about glory or country. It was for his mother.

That choice speaks from the heart.

Through this poem, Rizal pictured nature itself celebrating Doña Teodora, with flowers, birds, and flowing water offering joy on her special day. It was a young son’s simple but beautiful way of saying thank you to the woman who first guided him, taught him, and helped shape his character.

On Mother’s Day, we remember that behind many lives of courage and purpose is a mother whose love quietly builds, teaches, and strengthens. Like Doña Teodora, mothers leave a mark that time cannot erase.

Happy Mother’s Day to all mothers, our first inspiration. 🌸

Karong Mother’s Day, atong hinumdoman nga likod sa daghang kinabuhi nga puno sa kaisog ug katuyoan, adunay inahan nga hilom nga nagpalig-on, nagtudlo, ug nagmahal. Sama kang Doña Teodora, ang mga inahan nagbilin og marka nga dili mapapas sa panahon.

Happy Mother’s Day sa tanang inahan, ang among unang inspirasyon. 🌸

Mi Primera Inspiracion (Spanish Original)

¿Porqué exhalan a porfía
del cáliz dulces olores
las embalsamadas flores
en este festivo dia?

Y ¿porqué, en la selva amena,
se oye dulce melodía
que asemeja la armonía
de la arpada filomena?

¿Porqué en la mullida grama
las aves, al son del viento,
exhalan meloso acento
y saltan de rama en rama?

Y la fuente cristalina,
formando dulce murmullo,
del cefiro al suave arrullo
entre las flores camina?

Es que hoy celebran tu día
¡oh, mi Madre cariñosa!
con su perfume la rosa
y el ave con su armonía.

Y la fuente rumorosa,
en este día feliz,
con su murmullo te dice
¡que vivas siempre gozosa!

Y, de esa fuente al rumor,
oye la primera nota,
que ahora de mi laud brota
al impulso de mi amor!

Today at our monthly KOR Usman Chapter meeting, we took a good look at where we are and where we’re headed. We talked about the state of the chapter, the amazing milestones we achieved in 2025, and celebrated the healthy standing of our finances. It’s always a great feeling when good governance meets real brotherhood.

We also lined up an exciting upcoming activity where every member will be heard, literally. We’re preparing something meaningful in partnership with institutions, all rooted in our shared love for the Order and the teachings of our National Hero. Big ideas, solid plans, and genuine passion around the table.

All these over a cup, actually more than a cup 😅, plus fries and pastries at Eddie’s Log Cabin. Good food, better conversations, and the best company. Onward, Usman Chapter!

From the Outgoing Regional Commander
Knights of Rizal – Central Visayas

Mga higala, dear visitors to Cebu, fellow Knights, and to our incoming officers:

As the drums of Sinulog 2026 begin to echo once more through our streets, we welcome you to Cebu—not only as travelers and devotees, but as witnesses to a living story of faith, culture, and nationhood. Sinulog is a celebration of devotion to the Santo Niño, yes, but it is also a celebration of who we are as a people: resilient, joyful, questioning, and united.

To our visitors: may you find in Cebu not only beauty and festivity, but meaning. May you feel the rhythm of a people who dance not to forget their history, but to remember it—proudly and honestly.

To my fellow Knights of Rizal, and most especially to the officers who will soon take up the mantle of leadership: I offer this message as both a farewell and a continuation.

Our Order was founded on brotherhood, patriotism, and service—values that do not end with a change of command. Offices change. Titles pass. But brotherhood endures. What we have built together in Central Visayas is not merely an organization, but a living fellowship bound by shared duty to the ideals of Dr. José Rizal and to the Filipino people.

Rizal lived at a time when faith and power were deeply intertwined, when to question abuses within religious institutions was often mistaken for an attack on faith itself. History reminds us that Rizal was not an enemy of God, nor of belief, but a defender of conscience, dignity, and truth. He challenged corruption, not spirituality; injustice, not genuine devotion.

Cebu, cradle of Christianity in our country, stands today as a powerful symbol of this contrast and this harmony. The same land that first welcomed the Cross also gave rise to generations who learned to think freely, to love their country fiercely, and to speak against tyranny when silence was safer. In this tension between faith and reform, tradition and progress, Rizal’s legacy finds its rightful place—not as a destroyer of belief, but as a purifier of it.

Sinulog itself teaches us this lesson: that faith is strongest when it walks hand in hand with integrity; that devotion is most meaningful when it is matched by compassion, justice, and love of country.

To the incoming officers: you inherit not only positions, but a responsibility—to guard this brotherhood, to deepen its relevance, and to ensure that the name of Rizal is not reduced to memory alone, but lived through action. Lead with humility. Decide with courage. Serve with the quiet strength

The Knights of Rizal Usman Chapter participated in the Rizal Day commemorations of the City of Cebu and the Municipality of San Fernando, Cebu.

Sir Marlouize E. Villanueva, KCR, Chapter Commander, joined Sir Edison A. Delos Angeles, KGOR, Regional Commander, and Sir Bryner L. Diaz, KGOR, Deputy Regional Commander, during both commemorative activities.

The Cebu City ceremony was led by Hon. Nestor D. Archival, while the San Fernando ceremony was led by Mr. Neal Enriquez.

Gathered at the Rizal Monument, we honored a hero whose life and writings awakened the Filipino spirit and continue to challenge us to love our country with both courage and conscience. Through the anthem, wreath-laying, and messages of reflection, we were reminded that Rizal’s sacrifice was not an end, but a call to think, to act, and to serve.

As Knights of Rizal, we carry this remembrance beyond ceremony. Rizal’s ideals of integrity, education, civic duty, and moral courage remain deeply relevant in our time, guiding how we serve our communities and our nation. May this commemoration strengthen our resolve to live out his teachings in daily life, and to help shape a Philippines that is enlightened, united, and just.

The Knights of Rizal Usman Chapter distributed relief packs to at least 52 families in Sitio Lower Pailob, Sambag I, Cebu City, on December 1, 2025. These households were among those severely affected by the series of typhoons and tropical depressions that struck Cebu last month.

The relief operation was facilitated by the Chapter and made possible through the generous donations of the KOR New York Area and KOR Texas Area.

The Knights of Rizal is a non-profit, non-sectarian organization created under Republic Act 646 to promote the life, works, ideals, and teachings of Dr. Jose P. Rizal.
