Research and intellectual property are intertwined when referring to academe. Universities have set up research centers that produce various forms of intellectual creations be it in the field of arts and literature, design and fashion, science and technology, or engineering, among others. With IPRs affording protection to these assets, universities need not be too dependent on tuition fees, especially the privately-owned ones, but can harness intangible assets to generate revenues. The biggest challenge is capturing those technologies that have commercial value and bringing them from the laboratory to the market with the help of those with capital who are willing to invest their money into the new products and services. The Innovation and Technology Support Office (ITSO) and Knowledge and Technology Transfer Office (KTTO) are two facilities within the university that work in tandem to facilitate the protection and commercialization of such products and services. Researchers who are properly guided in exercising protection of the results of their work thru intellectual property stand to benefit more than without it. USC encourages disclosures of invention and other IPs generated from the research of its faculty and students thru incentives not only for their own benefits but the society at large when those IPs are commercialized. Incentives start with disclosure, then when the disclosed invention is applied for IP protection, and when granted with patents, the income that arises from its commercialization, is shared as royalty or other modes of income sharing following the university's IP Policy. Every university researchers are enjoined to observed this policy.
