The history of Cebu Normal University (CNU) began with the establishment of its forerunner, the Cebu Normal School. as a tributary of the Normal School in Manila (now the Philippine Normal University) in 1902. It first opened its doors to Filipinos aspiring to become teachers, on 16 June 1902. This is based on the records showing that the school year 1902-1903 opened on that date, such as in Manil

a and in Iloilo. Records also reveal that the American Teachers Institute in Cebu City opened likewise, on 16 June 1902. Florence Grayum, a teacher assigned to Cebu Normal School. was among the lecturers of the said Institute on 18 June 1902. Frank Daniel, she became assistant to Samuel MacClintock, the school’s first principal, in the administration of the school during 1902-1903, as mentioned in Mr MacClintock’s report to the Secretary of Public Instruction in 1903. Mr MacClintock later served in concurrent capacity as Division Superintendent of Schools for the province of Cebu. With the passage of RA 5128 in 1967, Cebu Normal School was renamed Cebu Normal College. It was converted into a state college by virtue of PD 944 in 1976. In 1998, it was elevated to university status under the name Cebu Normal University.

LOOK | Flavors, cultures take center stage at CNU ASEAN Caravan

Colors, flavors, and movements from across Southeast Asia came alive at the ILS Centennial Stage as Cebu Normal University’s ASEAN Caravan Week 3 brought together cultural exhibits, food presentations, and performances celebrating the traditions of 11 ASEAN countries.

The event showcased the rich and diverse cultures of Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor-Leste, and Vietnam through vibrant displays of food, arts, music, dance, and other cultural expressions.

Behind the colorful booths, flavorful food exhibits, and dynamic performances were students from the Homemakers Association (Bachelor of Technology and Livelihood Education), Physical Education Majors Organization (PEMO), Culture and Arts Majors’ PACK, and CNU-Tourism Society.

Dr. Janet Mananay, director for Internationalization Affairs, underscored the importance of cooperation in bringing the celebration to life.

“This is an example of how collaboration and effort make this event successful,” Mananay said.

For CNU Supreme Student Council President Kurt Justin Jacalan, the celebration went beyond showcasing cultural differences. He said the activity embodied the spirit of “pakikipagkapwa,” a deep recognition of shared human identity and connection.

“As we witnessed the cultural singing, the pagkalamian nga pagkaon from BTLED, the cultural and extravagant booths of the tourism students, the vibrant expressions and dance of the PEMO, and the captivating Huangmei Opera performance from our visiting delegation, we were reminded that our differences are beautiful, but our connectedness is profound,” Jacalan said.

The event also fostered connections between CNU and its international visitors. Win Kua of Kang Chiao International School Hefei Campus expressed appreciation for the university’s hospitality and enthusiasm for the cultural exchange.

“Thank you for the hospitality, and we are excited to learn from CNU,” Kua said.

The delegation also entertained CNU students with a special song performance during the cultural presentation.

Through its food, performances, exhibits, and cultural presentations, ASEAN Caravan Week 3 gave students and visitors an opportunity to experience the traditions of Southeast Asia while discovering the shared values that connect its people.

LOOK | CNU College of Nursing strengthens nursing workforce via special review program

Around 40 Clinical Care Associates (CCAs) from hospitals across the country have gathered at the Marcelo Fernan Hall of Cebu Normal University (CNU) for a four-day onsite special nursing review program organized by the College of Nursing (CN), which officially commenced today.

The program is part of the Nurse Workforce Complementation and Upskilling Program established through a Joint Administrative Order of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) and the Department of Health (DOH). It provides free nursing review sessions to CCAs, nursing graduates who are currently serving in hospitals but have yet to take the Philippine Nurses Licensure Examination (PNLE).

At CNU, the initiative began in April through a hybrid learning setup and will culminate on August 22 with onsite review sessions.

As a top-performing institution in nursing education, CNU, through its College of Nursing, is among the participating higher education institutions supporting the national program's implementation.

Beyond preparing participants for the licensure examination, the initiative provides CCAs with an avenue to strengthen their knowledge, sharpen their clinical competencies, and advance their professional readiness, helping bridge the gap between nursing education, licensure, and service in the healthcare sector.

CNU’s participation highlights the university’s role not only in producing competent nursing professionals but also in contributing to national efforts to strengthen and sustain the country’s nursing workforce.
