As we celebrate the 30th year of World AIDS Day, Philippines is on the brink of having an improved HIV policy. With the theme, “Know Your Status,” its focus is encouraging people to know their HIV infection status through testing, and urging the policy-makers to promote an inclusive agenda on HIV and related health services.
The Philippine HIV AIDS Policy of 2018 is now waiting to be signed by the President before it is enacted as a law. This will improve and strengthen the current HIV and AIDS law in the Philippines by introducing newer evidence-based, human rights-informed, and gender transformative strategies to prevent and treat the epidemic. This bill will also allot more funds for HIV awareness campaigns on schools, workplaces, and communities. Another important provision in this bill is its enhanced anti-discrimination protection for people living with HIV.
