What a proud and meaningful moment for the University of the VisayasβCollege of Maritime Education (UV-COME)!
On August 19β20, 2026, our faculty and staff researchers came together with scholars from different parts of the world at the 3rd International Research Conference 2026, held at the University of the VisayasβMain Campus, Cebu City.
Guided by the theme, βHarnessing Research Frontiers: Innovation, Emerging Technologies, and Transformative Inquiry,β the conference was more than an academic gathering. It was an opportunity to share ideas, learn from one another, build connections, and show how research can help address real challenges in the maritime industry and our communities.
And we are incredibly proud of what our UV-COME researchers brought to the table. β€οΈβ
π A WELL-DESERVED BEST PAPER AWARD
A special congratulations to Dr. Rosie A. Mendoza, 2/M Eustequio Cabatuan, 2/M Ferdinand Chiong, 2/M Rene Godinez, and Capt. Anthony Bullo for earning the prestigious Best Paper Award for their study:
βAssessment of the Operational Effectiveness of Ballast Water Treatment Systems and Their Potential to Minimize Marine Pollutionβ
Lead Investigator: Dr. Rosie A. Mendoza
Presenter: 2/M Eustequio Cabatuan
Co-Authors: 2/M Ferdinand Chiong, 2/M Rene Godinez, Capt. Anthony Bullo
This study tackles an important issue close to the heart of the maritime industryβthe need for effective ballast water treatment to help protect our oceans and minimize marine pollution.
Winning Best Paper is not only an award. It is a recognition of the team's hard work, dedication, and commitment to producing research that matters.
πΏ RESEARCH THAT CONNECTS THE ENVIRONMENT, COMMUNITY, AND LIVELIHOOD
We also proudly congratulate 2/M Sergio Jr. Deniega and his research team for presenting:
βEcotourism Potential of Mangrove Plantations and Its Contribution to Economic Sustainability in Barangay Biasong, Talisay City, Cebuβ
Lead Investigator & Presenter: 2/M Sergio Jr. Deniega
Co-Authors: 2/M Christian John Lisondra, Capt. Christian Nino Daniel Cag-ong, Capt. Theodore Salmero, Capt. Clint Herrera, Dr. Rosie A. Mendoza
Their research reminds us that protecting our natural resources can go hand in hand with creating opportunities for communities. Through mangrove conservation and responsible ecotourism, environmental protection can also contribute to community development and economic sustainability.
β BRIDGING WHAT WE LEARN WITH WHAT WE DO
Another noteworthy presentation came from Dr. Rosie A. Mendoza and her team through the study:
βBridging Theory and Practice: Assessing Seafarersβ Practical Application of MARPOL Annex I Regulationβ
Lead Investigator: Dr. Rosie A. Mendoza
Presenter: 3/E Prospero Carbonilla
Co-Authors: Dr. Robert M. Maluya, Capt. Dino Ferrer, C/E Rex Lahoylahoy, 3/E Emmanuel Dumloan
The study looks at how maritime knowledge and regulations are translated into actual practice, particularly in the application of MARPOL Annex I among seafarers.
Because at the end of the day, research is not simply about what we knowβit is about how we use what we know to make the maritime industry safer, cleaner, and more responsible.
π MORE THAN AN AWARD, THIS IS A CELEBRATION OF PEOPLE.
Behind every research paper is a team that spent countless hours thinking, writing, revising, discussing, presenting, and believing in the value of their work.
Behind every presentation are researchers who chose to contribute something meaningful.
And behind every achievement is a community that continues to support the pursuit of knowledge.
To our UV-COME researchers, thank you for carrying the name of our institution with pride and for showing that maritime education is not only about preparing competent seafarersβit is also about creating knowledge, finding solutions, protecting our oceans, and shaping a better future for the maritime industry.
ππ Congratulations to our Best Paper awardees, presenters, and research teams!
Your achievement is a source of pride for the entire University of the VisayasβCollege of Maritime Education community.
May this milestone inspire more research, more collaboration, more innovation, and more opportunities to make a difference.
Today, we celebrate the award.
Tomorrow, we continue the journey.
β WE RESEARCH. WE INNOVATE. WE MAKE A DIFFERENCE.
