HEADLINE: ISCC Midwifery Students Rally to Restore Birthing Home Facility After Typhoon Egay

In the wake of the destructive Typhoon Egay that wreaked havoc across Ilocos Sur last July 27, 2023, the indomitable spirit of the Bachelor of Science in Midwifery students at Ilocos Sur Community College (ISCC) shone brightly. Facing the aftermath of extreme weather conditions, which had submerged their campus in neck-deep flooding, the ISCC Birthing Home facility suffered significant damage, including the loss of essential files and equipment.

Determined to get the birthing home back on its feet, from September 4 to 8, 2023, these resilient BS Midwifery students volunteered their precious break time to help with the extensive cleaning and restoration efforts. Guided by their dedicated clinical instructors, the students worked tirelessly to rebuild what had been disrupted by Typhoon Egay.

Located within the Quirino Stadium complex in Bantay, Ilocos Sur, the Birthing Home Facility holds a special place in the hearts of ISCC's Midwifery Department. The students' unwavering commitment to lending a helping hand in these challenging times showcases their core values and character traits, particularly their spirit of volunteerism. Their selfless actions not only embody the resilience of the human spirit but also exemplify the sense of community that ISCC holds dear.

HEADLINE: BS Midwifery Students Shine in 5-Day Intensive RA7392 Skills Training

From September 11 to 15, 2023, the halls of Ilocos Sur Community College (ISCC) were abuzz with the eager anticipation of future midwives as BS Midwifery students embarked on a transformative 5-day intensive skills training program. Focusing on RA7392, this comprehensive training equipped students with essential competencies in IV insertion, suturing, internal examination, drug administration, partographing, and Essential Intrapartal Newborn Care procedures.

The training was expertly guided by the Midwifery clinical instructors who not only delivered enlightening lectures but also provided hands-on supervision during the practical sessions. Spearheaded by the capable Ms. Cheenette Torricer, Clinical Coordinator and head organizer of the seminar, the students were meticulously prepared for the complexities of their future roles.

The training, which took place at the Function Hall in the Agro-industrial Building within the Quirino Stadium complex in Bantay, Ilocos Sur, had a dual purpose. Not only did it enhance the clinical competencies of the BS Midwifery students, but it also served as a crucial preparation for their acquisition of delivery cases, a pivotal milestone in their journey towards board examinations.

Conducted annually by the Midwifery Department teachers, this intensive skills training is a testament to ISCC's commitment to competency enhancement and the future success of its students in the field of midwifery. These aspiring midwives have shown that dedication, hands-on learning, and expert guidance can indeed light the path toward excellence in maternal and newborn care.

HEADLINE: ISCC Midwifery Students Demonstrate Commitment to Safe Clinical Duty through Voluntary Pregnancy Tests

Demonstrating their unwavering dedication to safe clinical duty, all female midwifery students from Level 2, 3, and 4 at ISCC willingly underwent voluntary pregnancy tests. This routine procedure, conducted by the fourth-year BS Midwifery students who are guided by their Clinical Instructors, is a proactive measure taken by the ISCC Midwifery Department to ensure the well-being of both students and expectant mothers during clinical exposure.

Prior to embarking on their clinical duties, these aspiring midwives voluntarily submitted themselves to pregnancy tests, aligning with ISCC's commitment to maintaining a secure and conducive learning environment. Notably, it was the fourth-year students themselves who conducted the tests, showcasing their growing skills and proficiency as future midwives.

This initiative not only safeguards the health and safety of all parties involved but also emphasizes the comprehensive training that midwifery students receive at ISCC. By actively participating in this vital aspect of maternal care, these students demonstrate their readiness to address the needs of expectant mothers and ensure safe deliveries in their future roles as midwives.

Headline: Empowering Midwifery Education: Students Launch Community Duty Program in Sitio Baldi, Ilocos Sur

Date: September 7, 2019

San Vicente, Ilocos Sur – In a landmark development for midwifery education, Bachelor of Science in Midwifery Level 2 and 3 students, under the guidance of Midwifery Principal Dr. Jeff Leigh Taay Reburon, embarked on a transformative community duty program in Sitio Baldi, Bantaoay, San Vicente, Ilocos Sur on Thursday, September 7, 2019. The launch of this program underscores the pivotal role of community laboratories in shaping the future of midwifery education.

In a show of collaboration between academia and the community, Clinical Instructor Anne Bernadette Fernando was endorsed by Dr. Jeff Leigh Taay Reburon to Hon. Beticia Rubina, the Baranggay Captain of Bantaoay. This partnership underscores the significance of cooperation in healthcare and education.

Sitio Baldi now serves as a community laboratory, providing midwifery students with the opportunity to apply their theoretical knowledge in a real-world setting. These students have already completed rigorous classroom coursework, and this hands-on experience is the bridge between theory and practice.

Under the watchful eye of experienced instructors, students are actively engaged in conducting primary assessments, observing childbirths, and providing prenatal and postnatal care. Such practical experience is invaluable in nurturing critical thinking skills and adaptability, both essential traits for future midwives.

Working in Sitio Baldi exposes students to diverse populations, fostering a deep understanding of cultural variations in childbirth practices and healthcare beliefs. This first-hand experience helps future midwives provide culturally competent care, which is crucial for building trust and rapport within the communities they serve.

This community duty program goes beyond education; it is also about community impact. During their survey of Sitio Baldi, students assessed the existing health threats in the area. These findings will lay the foundation for their future community projects, aimed at improving maternal and child health outcomes. This proactive approach is a testament to the commitment of these future midwives to addressing health disparities at the grassroots level.

This collaboration isn't just about learning; it also highlights the vital role midwives play as integral members of the healthcare team. They work hand-in-hand with local authorities to enhance community health and well-being.

As the Bachelor of Science in Midwifery Level 2 and 3 students continue their community duty in Sitio Baldi, they are not only advancing their education but also contributing to the betterment of the community they serve. This holistic approach to midwifery education sets a precedent for future healthcare professionals and strengthens the bond between education, community, and healthcare, ultimately leading to improved maternal and child health outcomes in the region.

In a rapidly evolving educational landscape, the 31st ALCUCOA Capability Building held from August 30 to September 1, 2023, at the picturesque Hotel Salcedo de Vigan in Vigan City, Ilocos Sur, provided a platform for local colleges and universities across the Philippines to gather, learn, and collaborate. Organized by the Commission on Accreditation for Local Colleges and Universities (ALCUCOA), this event carried the theme of "Leading Educational Strategies in a Complex World."

Representatives from educational institutions all over the Philippines, including the enthusiastic team from Ilocos Sur Community College, came together to explore innovative ways to enhance the quality of education in their respective institutions.

The Ilocos Sur Community College delegation included:

Mr. Romulo Agcamaran Jr., Auxiliary Services Coordinator
The event's distinguished speakers included Dr. Raymundo Arcega, President of ALCUCOA, and Atty. Gloria Victoria Bañas, College President of City College of San Fernando.

One of the key focuses of the capability training seminar was the paramount role of accreditation in ensuring the delivery of quality education in local colleges and universities throughout the Philippines. Accreditation is not just a badge of honor; it's a commitment to continuous improvement, a path to academic excellence, and a way to provide students with the best possible education.

Dr. Arcega emphasized the importance of this accreditation journey, stating, "Accreditation is a journey, not a destination. It's about constantly striving to be better, to meet and exceed educational standards, and to provide our students with an education that prepares them for the challenges of the modern world."

Atty. Bañas, sharing insights from her tenure as the College President of City College of San Fernando, discussed best practices in strategic leadership. She highlighted how effective leadership can address the various educational concerns that institutions may encounter. "Leadership is not about having all the answers but about empowering your team to find solutions together," she remarked.

The 31st ALCUCOA Capability Building provided a valuable platform for educators, administrators, and leaders in local colleges and universities to learn, share, and collaborate. The event underscored the critical role of accreditation in ensuring educational quality and encouraged attendees to embrace strategic leadership as a means to navigate the complexities of the educational landscape.

As we look to the future of education in the Philippines, events like these serve as beacons of inspiration and collaboration.
