Feeding children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) often involves unique challenges and everyday adjustments within the family setting. In the latest issue of the Asia-Pacific Journal of Human Development and Family Studies (AHEAD), the study “Caregivers’ Experiences in Feeding Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Qualitative Study” explores the lived experiences of Filipino caregivers in supporting the feeding practices of children with ASD.

Authored by Daniela V. Sagum, Aileen R. de Juras, and Anna Teresa O. Orillo from the Institute of Human Nutrition and Food, College of Human Ecology, University of the Philippines Los Baños, the study highlights food selectivity, mealtime behaviors, caregiving approaches, and the important roles of extended family members, therapy services, and SPED schools in supporting children with ASD.

The findings emphasize the value of culturally grounded caregiving practices and stronger family-school collaboration in improving developmental and nutritional outcomes for children with ASD.

We feature another meaningful study from Legacy: The Scientific Publication of the Department of Human and Family Development Studies — “From the Filipinos and for the Filipinos.”

The article “Migration Theories and Development: A Focus on Push & Pull Factors of Filipino Migrants” examines the major factors that influence Filipino international migration and the continuing rise of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs). Using Everett Lee’s Push-Pull Theory, the study highlights how economic concerns such as unemployment, income inequality, and limited job opportunities continue to drive migration, while opportunities abroad and social influences attract Filipinos to work overseas. The findings also reveal that these migration patterns remained largely consistent from 2009 to 2019.

Authored by Eric Paul Peralta, Inero V. Ancho, and Daisy Pelegrina, this research provides valuable insights into the realities of Filipino migration and the broader social and economic conditions that shape the lives and decisions of OFWs.

As part of the research project, "Born in Japan, Martyred in the Philippines: The Life and Works of Capt. Isao Yamazoe,” the research team paid a courtesy call on Mayor Jade A. Agullo of the Municipality of Dulag, Leyte to formally introduce the study and seek guidance from the local government.

The project is led by Assoc. Prof. Inero V. Ancho, PhD, Chair of the Department of Human and Family Development Studies, College of Human Ecology, University of the Philippines Los Baños. The members of the research team are Assoc. Prof. Rufo Gil Z. Albor, PhD; Assoc. Prof. Abriel S. Bulasag, PhD; and Mr. Phrygian Perez Almeda.

This project is one of only three Sumitomo Foundation grantees from the Philippines. It seeks to produce rigorous qualitative knowledge on the life story of Capt. Yamazoe and Filipino collective memory, and to translate the findings into researcher-created, classroom-ready localized peace education materials.

Specifically, the project aims to document significant moments in Capt. Yamazoe’s life story through narrative inquiry; analyze how Filipino communities remember and make sense of their affection for him; create accurate, culturally responsive, and learning outcome-aligned peace education materials derived strictly from empirical findings; conduct expert review and small-scale pilot validation to refine the materials for classroom usability and ethical sensitivity; and disseminate the findings and materials to schools, local government units, and heritage groups through orientations and open-access posting.

We are grateful to Mayor Agullo and the Municipal Government of Dulag for the warm welcome and support as we continue this meaningful historical, educational, and community-based research.

Presenting the 2026 Thesis Students of the Department of Human and Family Development Studies (DHFDS) as they embark on the final stretch of their academic journey.

Driven by passion, guided by purpose, and grounded in service to Filipino individuals, families, and communities, these young scholars continue to explore meaningful issues through research, critical inquiry, and compassionate understanding.

From stories of resilience and identity to family life, community development, health, culture, and social realities, their studies reflect the commitment of DHFDS to research that is both relevant and transformative.

As they prepare their proposals, conduct fieldwork, and write the narratives that will define their undergraduate journey, we celebrate their dedication, perseverance, and courage to contribute knowledge that matters.

May this season of research be filled with wisdom, strength, meaningful discoveries, and countless breakthroughs.

The journey continues — one interview, one chapter, and one defense closer to the Sablay.

Congratulations and best wishes, 2026 DHFDS Thesis Students!

What does it mean to be a licensed Psychology professional in the Philippines today?"

In their article, “Licensed to Sell?: Navigating Professional Identity and the Commodification of Psychology in the Philippines,” Joyce O. Dayao and Jholyan Francis S. Fornillos explore how licensure not only strengthens professional identity but also introduces new challenges shaped by market demands and economic realities.

Based on interviews with licensed psychologists and psychometricians, the study reveals tensions between ethical practice and financial survival—raising important questions about the future of Psychology as both a profession and a service.
