Our oceans stand as the forebearers of life, where countless flora and fauna that laid the foundation for our survival are born. It was our cradle, our sanctuary before we were even ourselves; so, why is it that we fail and neglect its protection?
Today, UPLB Zoological Society stands in celebration and solidarity with this yearโs World Oceans Day, with the theme: Strong Marine Protected Areas for Our Blue Planet, to remember the fight in safeguarding the wildlife and history that call the blue oceans home.
Every year on the 8th of June, the United Nations observes World Oceans Day to raise awareness and public interest on the importance and protection of marine ecosystems and sustainable management of its diversity. Coral reef systems alone are home to at least 25% of all marine life despite occupying less than 1% of the ocean floor. Yet these havens for marine diversity continue to be threatened. As reef systems deteriorate, the need for stronger conservation measures become a need. Not just to preserve our oceans but to safeguard those that live in it.
The answer lies in Marine Protected Areas (MPAs), or designated zones where human activities are carefully monitored and controlled to give marine ecosystems a chance to recover. Here, corals are given time to regenerate, fish populations are replenished, and other marine organisms are able to feed, repopulate, and grow without disturbance.
Now, it asks us a simple question: is the survival and protection of these ecosystems an afterthought or a priority?
This World Oceans Day, we hope our answer is the latter. We should be reminded that the ocean is not a separate entity, but our beginning and our ending. Every breath we take and step we make should be in the promise to safeguard these azure sanctuaries. Protecting it requires more than just appreciation; it demands our action, our voices, and our responsibility. If not today, then when? If not for them, then for who?
May we remember that within every shell, the rhythm of the waves and the shore enduresโwith a sound we can only hear if we choose to listen and with a life we can only protect if we choose to act.
