𝗡𝗘𝗪𝗦: UPDNSO cultivates leadership, compassion among Nursing student leaders

PHINMA University of Pangasinan Department of Nursing Students Organization (UPDNSO) brought together student nurse leaders earlier today, July 24, 2026, at the University Audio Visual Room for Pankalinawen: Leading Beyond the Classroom, Serving Beyond the Self: A Leader Forum, in pursuit of leadership knowledge while embracing compassion, competence, commitment, and care.

In light of guiding the mayors from the nursing department, Ms. Liezel Mae G. Macaraeg, RN, MAN, delivered a talk about the path of nursing life as a student. She emphasized that having good grades or becoming a top board passer does not solely define the goals for the nursing students, as making patients feel cared for is the most impactful achievement.

The forum served as a reminder to the students that in order to be a leader, you must also be a good example. For this to be accomplished, they must show professionalism, determination, and sacrifice not just as student nurses but also as leaders.

"Leadership starts in the class and also extends beyond the classroom," stated Ms. Macaraeg, highlighting the importance of sharing knowledge with others and rising to the top together without leaving anyone behind.

This was followed by the awarding of the certificate to the speaker and the oath-taking ceremony together with the president, Luic C. Buenaventura, who introduced the faculties of the department of nursing along with the officers of the nursing student organization to the student nurse leaders.

Moments after the awarding of the certificate and the introduction, the UPDNSO conducted an icebreaker activity, lighting the room with laughter, cheers, and amazement after the student nurse leaders revealed their acting skills, demonstrating the talents they possess while having a compassionate heart for caring.

After the icebreaker, the UPDNSO officers discussed and read the constitution and bylaws of the nursing department student organization to the student nurse leaders present.

Subsequent to this was the discussion of the calendars of activities, the membership fee, proper uniform attire, and grooming, along with the answers to the questions asked.

"This forum reminds us that education is not only about gaining knowledge, but also about developing character, compassion, a genuine desire to make a difference,” said Ms. Samantha Joy C. Eco Cruz as the event ended with everyone taking a group photo.

The 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗣𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗮𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻 𝗗𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗡𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗢𝗿𝗴𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 (𝗨𝗣𝗗𝗡𝗦𝗢)
successfully conducted 𝗣𝗔𝗡𝗞𝗔𝗟𝗜𝗡𝗘𝗪𝗔𝗡 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲, bringing together our 𝗟𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹 𝟮 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗟𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹 𝟯 𝗕𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗸 𝗠𝗮𝘆𝗼𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗦𝗲𝗰𝗿𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 for a day of learning, collaboration, and leadership development.

One of the forum’s key reminders was that success 𝙞𝙣 𝙣𝙪𝙧𝙨𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙞𝙨 𝙣𝙤𝙩 𝙙𝙚𝙛𝙞𝙣𝙚𝙙 𝙨𝙤𝙡𝙚𝙡𝙮 𝙗𝙮 𝙜𝙧𝙖𝙙𝙚𝙨 𝙤𝙧 𝙖𝙘𝙝𝙞𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙨, 𝙗𝙪𝙩 𝙗𝙮 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙥𝙖𝙨𝙨𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙬𝙚 𝙨𝙝𝙤𝙬 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙙𝙞𝙛𝙛𝙚𝙧𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙚 𝙬𝙚 𝙢𝙖𝙠𝙚 𝙞𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙡𝙞𝙫𝙚𝙨 𝙤𝙛 𝙤𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙨. True leadership begins with being a good example—leading with 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗶𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁.

Participants were also introduced to the organization’s 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗕𝘆-𝗟𝗮𝘄𝘀, calendar of activities, and other important departmental guidelines, reinforcing the role of leaders both inside and beyond the classroom. The program also included the 𝗨𝗣𝗗𝗡𝗦𝗢 𝗢𝗮𝘁𝗵-𝗧𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗥𝗶𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮 𝗤&𝗔 𝘀𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻, where the newly elected officers were formally introduced and had the chance to answer questions from the student leaders.

“𝗔𝗹𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲” Two simple words that remind us that every step we take, every lesson we learn, and every person we choose to serve brings us 𝗮𝗹𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲—closer to becoming not only competent nurses, but compassionate leaders.

In line with our shift toward a brighter horizon, The Students’ Herald has released the Herald Nebulights Volume II, Special Issue No. 1. This special edition features full coverage of the 'First Week Hi! 2026' celebration, themed, 'VIVA PHINMA: Spread your Wings, Embrace New Heights.'

'First Week Hi!' event marks the official start of the academic year. Spanning an entire week, the celebration is aimed to help incoming freshmen settle into their new environment while giving returning upperclassmen a chance to reconnect. Inside this issue, we highlight the different activities, student stories, and campus updates that defined our first week back to the campus grounds.
