So, when did they start to become a part of you ?

Making friends in senior high school felt simpler. A diverse group that surrounded you and because you shared the same classes it was easier to meet naturally. College is different. Almost everyone is starting over, and although your course already puts you around people with something in common, it doesn’t always mean you share the same interests, personality, or humor. Sometimes, the biggest similarity is simply pare-pareho kayong nahihiya. At some point, you missed your chance of actually meeting the right friend for you.

So naturally, you look for someone to talk to. Whoever sits beside you, starts the first conversation, or matches your energy can quickly become your first friend. Freshies need a safety net. Having someone to be around with or message when you have no idea what is happening can make college feel a lot less scary.

But this is exactly where you need to be careful. Just because someone was there when you started doesn’t mean they have to be there for your entire college. We laugh at jokes we do not find funny, agree with things we do not agree with, or avoid saying β€œno” because we do not want our friends to think we are against them.

The people around you can influence your habits, behavior, mindset, and even what you consider normal. If your friends constantly normalize something unhealthy, you might eventually stop questioning it too. Sometimes, you can even become biased toward your friends because you think supporting them means always taking their side.

That is why having the β€œright” friends is not about having the biggest friend group. It is about having people around you who let you grow without making you feel like you have to become someone else just to fit in. You can have completely different personalities and interests while still respecting each other’s boundaries, opinions, and values.

Finding those people takes time. Your first-semester friends might not be the same people you graduate with and sometimes, being alone for a while is better than forcing yourself to stay somewhere you do not feel like you belong. College is not just about getting your diploma. It is also about figuring out who you are, and the people around you can become a huge part of that process.
Years from now, you probably will not remember every lecture, deadline, or random assignment. But you will remember the people you spent those years with and maybe even more importantly, the person you became while you were with them.
Surround yourself with friends who make you feel more like yourself, not less.

Joining School organization will help you develop

Picture this while still in college, you can already gain experience and build connections by joining something, and this something is called an organization. You can meet different people who have the same interest as you, and through that process you might stumble upon networking opportunities that can help you gain more opportunities in the future.
For a Gen Z first-year college student, this experience can help you grow and develop different kinds of interests and skills that can also help you build your resume. According to Bentley University, you can develop your communication skills, work with a team, expand your resume, and further improve the skills that you already have before going to college.
If you think about it, the experience you gain from joining can also help you handle harder tasks or activities that may appear in your class or in the upcoming higher education that you will face.
For me, when I first joined a school organization, I felt awkward, uncomfortable, and scared, and based on the answers you guys gave to the questions we posted, some of you answered that they feel excited, uncertain of the consequences in joining, and some even said It will be time consuming, it is normal to feel that way and think that way. The best advice that I can give is to just go with the flow and enjoy.

A Freshman’s Guide to Balancing Academic Responsibilities and Personal Interest in College

Entering college feels like stepping into a new life. You have a new environment, new people, and many unfamiliar things around you. As you meet new people, simple conversations turn into shared experiences, and this is where the Side Quest begins. College gives you more freedom to explore hobbies, friendships, organizations, and activities outside academics. However, having fun should not mean losing sight of what brought you to college in the first place.

Academic stress can make it tempting to choose a quick escape. You might go out with friends to take your mind off quizzes, activities, and deadlines. Taking a break can help you recharge, but constantly choosing side quests over your responsibilities can create even more stress later. The problem is not having side quests; the problem starts when they take over your main quest.

That is why planning ahead and prioritizing matters. Know which tasks need your attention first and set time for both schoolwork and the things you enjoy. A simple plan can help you avoid unnecessary cramming while still giving you time for yourself.

Work efficiently. Put away distractions, focus on one task, and finish what you need to finish. The sooner you complete your responsibilities, the sooner you can enjoy your free time without worrying about unfinished work.

You do not have to choose between being a responsible student and enjoying college. You can have both. Explore, make friends, try new things, and create memories, but know when to pause the side quests and focus on what matters. College is more than just completing requirements, but your main quest still deserves your attention. You can even turn some side quests into productive ones by studying with friends, joining organizations, or trying something that helps you grow.

Enjoy the side quests, but don’t forget the main quest.

Tips on how to build effective study habits

College is definitely a hectic place to be in, especially when you have yet to adjust to certain subjects and deadlines. It would definitely be great if you had good studying habits to cope with everything.

First of all, studying in advance instead of cramming during the night will definitely be very helpful. As one student shared, β€œDo reviewers ahead of time, para mag-review na lang on the following week.” Making a reviewer days before the exam will also relieve some stress for you.

Another thing that should not be forgotten about is finding your method of studying. While some people do better using flashcards, others need music for that. Experimenting with various methods will help you learn which ones work better for you.

In addition to all of the above, do not forget about resting when you are feeling too stressed out. Sometimes having some rest or doing things that you like will definitely come in handy.

Be consistent and start in advance, and everything will go smoothly for you.

REMEMBER:
Start early. Find what works. Take breaks. Stay consistent.

Get ready to know your instructors

Welcome to college, a place where your classmates may soon become your colleagues, and your instructors can give you an early glimpse of what it is like to work with different kinds of people. Just as employers have different ways of managing employees, instructors also have their own ways of teaching and handling their classes!

Every instructor has a different way of β€œsteering” the classroom. Frey (2026) identifies relationship-building, active engagement, and clear instructions as important teaching practices; three helpful clues students can use to understand how their instructors teach, manage the class, and support learning. Before judging a teaching style, observe the direction the class is taking.

First, observe how they teach. Take note of how they deliver lessons, whether through discussions, demonstrations, presentations, or independent study. If they mainly discuss, practice taking organized notes; if they rely more on presentations or self-study, try reviewing the materials beforehand and finding other resources when needed. Also, know how they assess students through recitations, reports, hands-on activities, group work, quizzes, or exams. This helps you prepare the skills each assessment requires.

Second, notice how they manage the class. Observe how they handle time, deadlines, rules, communication, participation, and grading. A simple way to adjust is to keep track of deadlines, read instructions carefully, and ask questions when expectations are unclear. Most importantly, take note of whether the rules are communicated and applied consistently.

Lastly, recognize how they support learning. See how they guide students, give feedback, answer questions, and respond to concerns. If an issue cannot be resolved directly, you can seek help through the proper channels, such as your college dean or guidance counselor.

As many students discover, when you are confused, do not immediately assume; ask and clarify! They may not require you to, but it is better to take one step at a time when talking with your instructor, especially if the subject they are teaching is not your specialty. After all, it is their role and responsibility to guide and educate.
