This academic gathering highlights student-led studies that critically examine how language, media, identity, and public discourse shape contemporary Philippine society. Through their ongoing research, students will explore topics such as political rhetoric, media framing, online conversations, identity construction, cancel culture, and the relationship between language and social power.

These presentations reflect the students’ developing work in discourse analysis and their efforts to contribute meaningful insights into language use, communication, and social realities in the Philippines today.

A day where words took center stage! ✨

The Lexical Power Competition 2026, held on April 16 at AVR2, GET Building, brought together students and faculty in a meaningful celebration of language, skill, and excellence.

The event opened with inspiring remarks from Dr. Ana Louella Navarro, the program head, who reminded everyone that the competition is not just about winning, but about enhancing and showcasing one’s abilities as a language learner. The day featured exciting activities such as the Spelling Bee and Jeopardy, followed by News Reporting, where students demonstrated their articulation, diction, and fluency in English, Filipino, and Cebuano-Bisaya.

The afternoon session continued with Impromptu Speaking, highlighting students’ confidence and critical thinking. This was followed by Declamation, where participants powerfully delivered “Cry of Balintawak,” expressing themes of freedom and patriotism.

Despite their busy schedules, interns and faculty members attended the event to show their support. The gathering became a true celebration of the power of language, bringing people together through stories and shared experiences.

With the theme “Springtime Flight: Soaring beyond the pages, weaving truths and stories, wordsmiths in bloom,” this year’s LPC proved that language is not only learned but lived.

The competition may have ended, but the passion for language continues.

It's been a week since the SHAPERS program took place, but our gratitude for our dear IMs are still coursing through our veins.

Thank you to Davao City Jail for letting our program extend educational help to our PDLs through the SHAPERS program. We are also extending our gratitude to our dear faculty members, fellows and our program head who worked tirelessly to make this event happen. To our alumni who wholeheartedly lent their presence through different means and channels, we are thankful and lucky for your constant support. To our student body, thank you for the donations—they surely gave our IMs the best experiences and biggest smiles. And lastly, we want to thank the PDLs who participated in this meaningful event. After all, they have stepped up to be the channel of knowledge behind bars. They actually taught us more than we taught them, and they are a living example that your identity is not tied to your past; that real growth emerges from acceptance and helping others. We are continuously inspired by your tenacity and resilience.

The time has come, and Midterm Exams are right around the corner. This 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝟭𝟮 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝟭𝟯, we embark on another set of trials and tribulations. We at UMABEA give our sincere good luck to all students, especially to our beloved Englishmen.

The checkpoint is here, the die has been cast, and it is now time to test what we have learned during the past ~3 months. Be prepared and only worry after it's done. For now, only think about giving your best. For the beauty always needs a best, and the best of the same feather flock together.
