As a COMMunity, we recognize teachers who show care about a student’s learning experiences. As we know, teaching is more than discussing lessons, ensuring that what is being taught becomes a memorable knowledge students can apply and carry beyond the classroom. For Sir Dave, learning is more than listening and memorizing, instead it requires students to put their knowledge into practice. Through his straightforward teaching style and practical activities, he shows that education is not merely about finishing a lesson but a preparation for what lies ahead.

He understands that learning a concept is merely the tip of the iceberg, he pushes students to push through and apply it for them to unleash their creativity and willingness to step outside one’s comfort zone. And behind these activities lies an important part of teaching: it is caring about whether students are learning and continuing to give students opportunities to try.
Sir Dave brings familiarity and unique ways to set the classroom, by saying “Goodmorning” despite it already being afternoon and the evening. But perhaps it means something more. As mornings represent a beginning and in his own little way, his greetings are a reminder that every lesson brings new opportunities to try and learn new lessons because no matter how the day has been, there is still another chance to grow.

This teacher’s day, we recognize Sir Dave for reminding his students that learning should lead to growth beyond the classroom. And much like his timely “Goodmornings” the lessons he leaves behind serve as a reminder that it is never too late to begin anew, unleash our true potential, and thrive more than we did yesterday.

At the University of Mindanao (UM), the name Izza Aima Montederamos may sound intimidating to some students. As a Linkage Officer at the External Relations and International Affairs Office (ERIAO), she helps connect the university with international institutions and supports students who take part in exchange programs abroad.

But for the students who have worked closely with her, Ma’am Izza is more than her position. She is a teacher who makes learning easier, an officer who guides students through the challenges of studying abroad, and someone they can approach with questions, stories, and even jokes.

One of her students who attended her class in Communication Planning, said meeting her as a professor changed the impression she had formed beforehand.

“At first, it was intimidating when you hear the name of Ms. Izza Montederamos,” the student shared.

However, that impression changed when she experienced Ma’am Izza’s teaching style. She described her as chill, approachable, and someone with a youthful vibe who explains lessons clearly and makes learning easier for students.

Beyond the classroom, Ma’am Izza also plays an important role in preparing students for international exchange programs. Her work involves more than coordinating partnerships between universities. It also means helping students manage the many requirements and adjustments that come with studying in another country.

One Former Exchange student shared that Ma’am Izza guided them from the application period until their return to the Philippines. She provided updates about flight schedules, itineraries, allowances, grade crediting, enrollment, and meetings. Even while the students were abroad, she continued checking on them and responding to their questions.

“Lahat ginagawa niya for us exchange students para easy and quick among processes,” the student said.

For students experiencing life in a foreign country, having someone they can contact for guidance can make a difference. Ma’am Izza’s consistent communication helped them navigate the process and feel supported even when they were far from home.

Another Former Exchange student described her as more than a linkage officer. For the student, she became a mother figure who continued to look after them while they were in Indonesia. Her quick responses and lighthearted jokes made the students feel more comfortable throughout their experience.

The student fondly referred to being part of “mga anak ni Ma’am Izza,” a phrase that reflects the close bond she developed with the exchange students she handled.

Despite her responsibilities in international relations, Ma’am Izza also knows how to connect with students on a personal level. One student described her as straightforward but easy to approach, someone who could match their humor while still providing guidance. This balance allowed students to ask questions and seek help without feeling uncomfortable.

Her work at ERIAO involves building partnerships, coordinating international mobility programs, and supporting activities that strengthen UM’s connections with institutions abroad. She has also represented the university in regional mobility meetings and international education activities, including the Asian International Mobility for Students (AIMS) Annual Review Meeting in Malaysia in 2025.

These responsibilities show the professional side of her work. However, the experiences shared by her students reveal another part of her role: the person behind the coordination, updates, and international partnerships.

Not every student who encounters Ma’am Izza necessarily develops the same personal connection with her. Some interact with her only for specific academic requirements or research-related matters. For those who have spent more time under her guidance, however, their experiences offer a closer look at the person they have come to know.

For the students she has guided abroad, her impact extends beyond making sure schedules are followed and documents are completed. It can also be found in the reassurance of receiving a reply when they have questions, the comfort of having someone check on them, and the laughter that makes unfamiliar experiences feel a little less overwhelming.

International linkages may be the work that connects Ma’am Izza to institutions across borders, but it is her connection with students that makes her work more personal. To some, she may be known as a university officer with an important role. To the students who have experienced her guidance and care, she is also the approachable teacher, dependable mentor, and mother figure behind “mga anak ni Ma’am Izza.”

Among them is Ma’am Jenifer Libres, APR, a professor of GE2 – Purposive Communication with Interactive Learning, whose commitment to excellence extends beyond the four walls of the classroom. Known for her high standards and firm approach to teaching, she challenges students to recognize their potential, push beyond their limitations, and develop the confidence necessary to thrive in the professional world.

“𝗜 𝗱𝗼𝗻’𝘁 𝘄𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗺𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗼𝗰𝗿𝗲” is a statement that reflects Ma’am Libres’ high expectations for her students. These words challenge them to go beyond what is merely acceptable and strive for work that reflects their full potential. For students, this may initially sound intimidating, particularly when preparing for speech performances and other classroom activities. However, behind these expectations is a genuine desire to help students recognize their capabilities and improve their skills. Rather than allowing them to settle for what is merely acceptable, she encourages them to value preparation, creativity, and continuous improvement.

As an Accredited Public Relations (APR) professional, Ma’am Libres brings industry standards into her teaching, emphasizing the importance of effective communication in academic and professional settings. Through public speaking exercises, interactive activities, and practical scenarios, she teaches students to communicate with clarity, confidence, and purpose. Her approach demonstrates that communication involves more than delivering a speech or presenting information. While her high expectations may contribute to the perception that she is a strict professor, students who have experienced her teaching recognize another side of her personality. Beyond her lessons in Purposive Communication, Ma’am Libres also shares stories about her own college experiences after class. These conversations offer students a glimpse into the realities of university life, allowing them to learn from experiences that textbooks alone cannot fully explain. Through these stories, she becomes more than a professor who evaluates performances and assigns requirements; she becomes a mentor who helps students understand the challenges, uncertainties, and possibilities that accompany their college journey.

For students taking GE2 – Purposive Communication with Interactive Learning, her influence lies not only in the skills they develop but also in the standards they learn to uphold. Although meeting her expectations can be challenging, the process also gives students an opportunity to discover abilities they may not have recognized in themselves.

Some teachers are remembered for the lessons they teach, while others are remembered for the moments that stay with their students long after class ends. For Prof. Keziah Suzaine W. Francisco, fondly known as Ma’am Kez, teaching extends beyond classroom discussions and academic requirements. Through thoughtful guidance, attention to detail, and meaningful interactions, she leaves an impression that reaches beyond the classroom.

For her Bachelor of Arts in Communication students, learning under Ma’am Kez means being challenged to think critically, question familiar beliefs, and consider different perspectives. Through creative activities, detailed projects, and opportunities to learn from guest speakers, she encourages students to explore ideas beyond what they already know. One student described her as a professor who “knows how to hold us to high standards without ever losing her empathy,” highlighting how she balances academic expectations with an understanding of her students’ needs.

Some of the most memorable moments, however, emerge from details that might otherwise go unnoticed.

One student recalled how Ma’am Kez had already memorized many of their names within their first few days together. During an early feature-writing examination, she also noticed that the student had used em dashes thirteen times in an article. Rather than feeling discouraged by the observation, the student appreciated how closely Ma’am Kez had paid attention to their work.

“She’s one of the professors who made me feel seen,” the student shared.

Being noticed in this way encourages the student to improve their writing and look forward to receiving feedback. What might have seemed like a small observation became a reminder that their work mattered enough for someone to read it closely.

Another student, who initially found Ma’am Kez strict and intimidating, recalled how a short comment on an examination paper prompted them to examine their analysis more deeply.

“That comment made me genuinely happy and motivated me to keep pursuing my passion for writing,” the student shared.

For both students, these moments show how feedback can extend beyond grades and corrections. When delivered with attention and purpose, even a brief comment can encourage students to reflect on their work, recognize their potential, and continue developing their skills.

Ma’am Kez’s influence also extends beyond academic work. After-class conversations sometimes turn into personal discussions, allowing students to share their concerns and receive advice drawn from her own experiences. For those who initially perceived her as intimidating, these interactions reveal a more approachable side of their professor—someone willing to listen and make room for conversations beyond coursework.

During a broadcasting competition in Panabo, another student recalled how Ma’am Kez recognized their talkative personality as a potential strength for hosting. The student also shared that they felt comfortable around her, describing their relationship as almost like having an older sister. Through that observation, a personality trait the student already possessed became something they could recognize as a possible strength.

From remembering names and offering thoughtful feedback to recognizing potential in unexpected places, Ma’am Kez’s influence emerges through the experiences her students carry with them. These moments reveal how she challenges students to improve while helping them recognize possibilities they might not have considered in themselves.

This Teachers’ Celebration , Ma’am Kez is celebrated for the moments that reveal just how much a teacher can mean to her students. A name remembered, a comment written on a paper, or a strength recognized in passing may seem like ordinary gestures, yet these are the moments her students carry with them beyond the classroom. Through them, Ma’am Kez leaves more than feedback on their work; she leaves her students with reasons to believe in their abilities, keep refining their craft, and discover what they are capable of becoming.

A classroom can be full of voices and still have something to learn about listening.

In Dr. Rowella R. Parrucho’s classroom, laughter can fill the room one moment, only to be met with a straightforward reminder the next. To some students, she is the professor who calls them out for being too noisy; to others, she is a motherly presence who notices their efforts and listens to their concerns. Then there is her signature bob cut, a familiar sight that one student mentioned among their Communication professors. With her recognizable hairstyle and unmistakably candid remarks, Ma’am Par certainly leaves an impression. Gentle yet firm, she teaches her students that communication is not just about making their voices heard, but also about making room for others.

Her lessons rarely stay confined to textbooks. Through personal stories, practical activities, and open discussions, she encourages students to connect what they learn with their own experiences. One student recalled how she reminded the class to speak English so an Indonesian exchange student could follow the discussion and participate. It was a simple reminder with a lasting message: effective communication means considering who is listening and making sure no one is left out.

Beyond classroom discussions, her students remember the little moments that made them feel seen. One recalled how Ma’am Par listened when a classmate submitted an activity late due to personal circumstances and gave them a chance to make up for it. Another remembered how she complimented their positive energy and matched their humor during a presentation. These gestures may seem small, but they show how understanding and appreciation can leave a lasting impression. At the same time, her high standards encourage students to take their work seriously, express their ideas with confidence, and recognize their potential.

Her lessons on language and communication also extend beyond the classroom. For Dr. Parrucho, language is not merely something to study; it is a part of a community’s history and identity worth preserving. Through her research on Sinurigao, she helps document the words and literary traditions that carry a community’s stories across generations. Her work, Wayawaya Sanan Jaunjaun: A Language Description of Sinurigao, was recognized by the Provincial Governor’s Office – Culture and the Arts in February 2026 for its contribution to linguistic heritage. Beyond this recognition, her work highlights the importance of preserving a community’s language and ensuring that the voices of one generation can still be heard by the next.

Perhaps years from now, her students will still laugh about the times Ma’am Par reminded them to keep their voices down. They may remember her candid remarks, the stories she shared, or the little words of appreciation that stayed with them. Beneath these memories lies a lesson that reaches far beyond the classroom: communication requires more than the ability to speak. It asks us to listen with intention, respond with care, and recognize the value of every voice.

After all, some of the most meaningful lessons are not simply about finding our own voices, but learning to hear one another.

Ma’am Yeza, how do we even begin to describe Ma’am Yeza?

“Ma’am Yeza is flawless.”

“I heard her lectures are so intriguing that even a classroom full of exhausted Comm students stays glued to their seats.”

“I heard she gives plus points (beke nemen, mæm).”

“I heard she once dropped an ‘off-the-record’ story mid-lecture. It was amazing!”

If the COMMunity had a royalty list, Ma’am Yeza wouldn’t just be on it—she’d be one of the people running the show. But unlike an actual Mean Girls hierarchy, intimidation isn’t her superpower. Instead, it’s her genuine kindness and ability to make students feel included while encouraging them to bring their A-game.

So fetch, right?

Ask any senior in the COMMunity, and they’ll tell you the same thing: “You will never be left out.” Ma’am Yeza has her own way of making everyone feel welcome, wherever they are. To capture what makes her special, we asked students to describe her in one word: “Mother,” “Considerate,” “Determined,” “Chill,” and “Chronically online.” Each word reveals a different side of her, but they all point to one thing: she truly is 𝙔𝙀𝙕𝘼𝙢𝙖𝙯𝙞𝙣𝙜!

She is not just a professor; she is the kind of “cool professor” whose passion and enthusiasm fill every corner of the classroom. Her discussions create a space where students feel comfortable stepping out of their comfort zones, sharing their thoughts, and exploring new ideas. In Ma’am Yeza’s class, there is never a dull moment. She is not only a COMMunity queen bee but also a chronically online icon who never fails to put a smile on our faces with her signature “baon” of vocal stims.

Beyond her vibrant personality, Ma’am Yeza brings professional expertise and real-world experiences into every discussion. Through the stories she shares, including those memorable “off-the-record” moments, she gives students a glimpse into the realities of communication and media. She helps them see not only the industry’s exciting possibilities but also its challenges, preparing them to approach their future careers with greater awareness and understanding.

More than being confidently beautiful with a heart, Ma’am Yeza serves as our COMMpass and silver lining. College life is rarely a walk in the park. Feeling lost, confused, and uncertain is part of the journey, but having someone who offers guidance and reassurance can make all the difference. Through her kindness and sincere words, she reminds us that we do not have to figure everything out alone. Sometimes, all it takes is a little encouragement from someone who believes in us.

So, through this feature, we celebrate Ma’am Yeza and the impact she continues to make on our COMMunity. With remarkable wit and wisdom, Dr. Maico D. Aperocho, serves as a beacon of excellence, a critical shaper of minds, guiding every student through growth and progress.

A prolific speaker, author, and researcher, Dr. Aperocho has graced global stages and contributed significant studies in language, mental health, and critical discourse analysis — while empowering educators through trainings in research, pedagogy, and leadership. Holding doctorates in both Applied Linguistics and Educational Management, he leads as Assistant Dean at the helm of the University of Mindanao’s College of Arts and Sciences Education, extending his exemplary leadership to thousands of visionary students and dreamers alike.

Dr. Aperocho, upholding virtue at best, is not only an instructor, but also a passionate law student who champions truth and fairness. Persistently, he balances both pursuits with grit and grace, ensuring every student gains a hands-on learning experience while advancing his education.

Yet, among all the titles he holds or will ever acquire, one identity lingers the most in the hearts of his students: a mentor that 𝙣𝙪𝙧𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙚𝙨, a teacher that 𝙘𝙖𝙧𝙚𝙨.

In every discussion, he imparts knowledge and real-world expertise, equipping students with practical skills and hands-on application. He illuminates truth like a beacon, delivering every lesson with poise and mastery. In every task, he ignites the passion for learning, inspiring them to listen, reflect more carefully, and lead with empathy.

Though his time teaching us was short, he transformed the way I think. He challenged me to think more critically and shared crucial and practical knowledge in the fields of media law and ethics. When students falter, he does not chastise; rather, he empowers them to 𝙛𝙞𝙣𝙙 their voice. With patience, he assists with a thoughtful heart, clearing the learning blocks that students stumble across the way. Because of him, they learn to speak their truths more firmly and more boldly. To stand with conviction and to guard themselves with pride. Because of him, they learn to amplify the voice of truth, no matter how loud the opposing voices may grow.

To learn under his guidance is a privilege like no other for he truly molds students into polished diamonds, refined through the fire of growth.

And with this breadth of expertise and dedication to transformative leadership, Dr. Aperocho remains a force of merit and excellence, enriching not only the minds and hearts of the students, but the University of Mindanao community as a whole.
