PAHAYAG NG PAGKAKAISA LABAN SA PAGSASABATAS NG ANTI-TERRORISM BILL!

Nananawagan at tumitindig ang iba't ibang organisasyon sa UP Mindanao na ibasura ang Anti-Terrorism Bill. Sa gitna ng pandemya na ating hinaharap dapat na nakapokus ang pamahalaan ni Duterte sa pagbibigay ng konkretong aksyon at plano upang labanan ito. Nakakagalit isipin na imbes na unahin ang pagbibigay ng sapat na ayuda, pagbibigay suporta sa mga medical frontliners, at pagpapatupad ng mass testing inuuna pa ni Duterte ang pagpapadulas sa kanyang mga anti-mamamayang polisiya. Patunay na mas natatakot ang administrasyong ito sa mga kritiko kesa sa virus na siyang tunay na kalaban.

Ang Anti-Terrorism Bill ang batas na layong ipalit sa Human Security Act, ang batas na ito ay magiging armas ni Duterte upang busalan ang mga mamamayang kritikal sa kanyang pamamahala. Sa loob ng ATB hindi malinaw kung ano ang tatawagin ng estado na porma ng terorismo, sa loob nito maaaring bansagang terorista ang sino mang magsasalita laban sa gobyerno, magbigay ng tulong sa mga non-government organizations, o kahit ang simpleng pagpapahayag ng pagkadismaya sa pamahalaan. Patunay na hindi lamang mga terorista ang dapat matakot sa batas na ito kung hindi pati na rin ang mga ordinaryong mamamayan. Pinapatay nito ang ating demokrasya, binabalahura ang ating konstitusyon, at tinatanggal ang ating karapatan sa pagpapahayag.

Nakakatakot isipin ang magiging bunga kapag naisabatas na ng tuluyan ang Anti-Terrorism Bill, magiging susi ito upang maging legal ang pagdakip sa mga nagsasalita laban sa gobyerno, pagpapatahimik sa mga midya, at pagmamanman sa mga kritiko at inosenteng mamamayang pinaghihinalaang terorista- ito ang bukangliwayway ng pagiging ganap na diktador ni Duterte.

Ang batas sa esensya ay dapat siyang pumuprotekta sa mga mamamayan laban sa mga masasamang elemento, hindi ito dapat maging armas laban sa mamamayan. Ang ginagawang pagratsa sa Anti-Terrorism Bill ng kasalukuyang administrasyon ay patunay lamang na hindi nila prayoridad ang ating laban sa COVID-19, sa halip ang batas na ito ay maaaring magamit sa pagpapatahimik sa mga mamamayang hinahanap ang bilyun-bilyong pondo na inutang ni Duterte na hanggang ngayon ay hindi natin maramdaman at sa sambayanang Pilipino na sawa na sa kanyang patuloy na pagpapakatuta sa China.

Ang Anti-Terrorism Bill ay pwedeng gamitin ng pamahalaan upang pasukin ang ating unibersidad. Matagal nang binabansagan ng estado na pugad ng mga terorista ang UP, bagama't ito ay napatunayang walang katotohanan, maaring maging lehitimo ang kanilang paniniktik sa mga estudyante at mga propesor sa loob ng unibersidad na labag sa ating akademikong kalayaan. Kasaysayan na ang nagpapatunay sa mga pag-atake ng estado laban sa mga lider-estudyante at mga kritiko mula sa unibersidad, ito ay sa porma ng death threats, mga black propaganda, at iba pang uri ng pagbabanta at panggigipit. Ang mga ito ay maararing lumala kapag naisabatas na ang Anti-Terrorism Bill.

Bilang mga Iskolar ng Bayan, magkaisa tayo sa pagpapanawagang ibasura ang Anti-Terrorism Bill at sumama sa lumalawak na hanay ng namumulat at nagkakaisang masa sa pagpapanawagang patalsikin na ang pasista, diktador, at tuta na si Duterte sa pwesto.

On the night before his burial, we call on our brothers, sisters, relatives and friends of Brod Isiah Thomas Catarman, to attend the funeral tribute by our confraternity.

Brod "Tomas" was the leader of Batch Malayang Layunin, 2009-A, UP Mindanao Chapter. He later took on the role as Lord Excelsius for SY 2011-2012.

In his stint as law student, Tomas participated in the Paragon Bar Operations for the 2018 Bar Exams, and interacted on various occasions with members of the Paragon Law Circle.

In the 28 years that he has lived, he has touched the lives of hundreds of people. From the mountains to the city streets, Tomas stood up to be a "Paragon of Scholarship", and has lived up to the call to serve the people.

In his death, we remember him in the ways he has kindled the fire of a Sigman in all of us. Tribute will be at 9:00 PM, at Palermo, Cosmopolitan Homes, September 12 (Thursday). Anyone who wish to come, please wear white to share and express our sympathy.

His internment will be at Davao Memorial Park, 2:00 PM, September 13.

A SPARK HAS DIED, BUT THE FIRE RAGES ON

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our brother, Brod Isiah Thomas Benaning Catarman, Batch 2009-A Malayang Layunin, Pi Sigma Pi Sigma Delta Confraternity, UP Mindanao, Lord Excelsius for S.Y. 2011-2012. He succumbed to pneumonia in the morning of September 4.

"Tomas" or "Tomi", as he was fondly called, was a bright spark of joy that kindled so many inspirational fires. His wit and humor were unparalleled, and his capacity to inject humor in difficult situations endeared Tomas to many. His ability to bring people together made him a common denominator in many activities of the confraternity, and earned him the respect even of many other organizations.

Tomas was never blind to the issues of the day, and never allowed his studies to get in the way of education. On issues of tuition-fee increase, campus militarization, and on other topics that went beyond the confines of UP, Tomas made sure that he was seeded among the oppressed, and that their struggles were articulated to many others. Indeed, Tomas's contribution to the student movement could not be doubted, and in the short time that he blazed, many others followed and continued burning.

He entered law school in Ateneo de Davao University and later transferred to Jose Maria College. Even in law school, Tomas was committed to living up the principles of serving the people. He would always study for the benefit of the masses, and yearned to be able to provide legal services to marginalized sectors. Though the rigors of law school tested his strength, Tomas fought on, knowing that the country needed lawyers of nationalist bent and with passion to serve the people.

In his death, we remember the many Paragons who heeded the call of their time. Brod Tomas remains a constant reminder to live up to the principles of the confraternity.

"Dauntless: Photo Exhibit on Women Martyrs" has been launched today! The photo exhibit aims to commemorate the women who fought and continued to fight for women's emancipation.

In partnership with Gabriela Youth UP Minsanao, the exhibit is launched in light of Pi Sigma Delta Sorority's 44th Anniversary, true to its principle of "Paglingkuran ang Sambayanan nang may Dangal".

The photo exhibit is located at the CHSS Hallway near room 105 until February 13. Everyone is welcome to take a look and feel the power of the dauntless!

Romen Samuel Wabina has been chosen as the official SR nominee of UP Mindanao for the 36th Student Regent Selection.

The deliberation for the nominee was done last Saturday (June 23, 2018) at the University Student Council House.

The SR is the sole representative of over 50,000 students of UP. The SR is the primary voice of the Iskolar ng Bayan (Scholars of the People) when it comes to issues that affect and define the students. Against the colorful and militant history of the student and youth movement, the presence of a representative in the Board of Regents was secured with the hard work and sacrifice of those who came before us; the existence of the Student Regent is the victory of the collective action of Iskolar ng Bayan.

The Student Regent selection will be part of the General Assembly of Student Councils to be held on July 29-30 at UP Visayas- Miag-ao Campus.

The examinee with the highest aggregate score after the evaluation of the Selection Board shall be selected as the Editor-in-Chief for A.Y. 2018-2019.
