UP Mindanao brings its commitment to advancing healthcare in Mindanao to the Wednesdays Media Forum happening today at Habi at Kape, Abreeza Corporate Center, Davao City.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Maria Fatima Quianzon-Manuel, College Secretary of the UP Mindanao School of Medicine, joins the forum to discuss the upcoming launching of the UP Mindanao School of Medicine and its vision of developing compassionate, excellent, and socially accountable physicians responsive to the health needs of Mindanao.

Also featured in today’s forum are Uma Neska on Lokhalaya 2026: Shaping Co-Creative Futures and the Philippine Eagle Foundation on conservation initiatives and community-based environmental protection.

LOOK | Public Forum and Presentation of Nominee

The UP Mindanao School of Management held its Public Forum and Presentation of Nominee today, September 1, 2026, at the Lorenzo Hall.

The programme featured the State of the School Address by incumbent Dean Prof. Aurelia Luzviminda V. Gomez, Ph.D., followed by the presentation of the sole nominee for the next Dean, Arvin B. Gutang, Ph.D.

The forum was followed by stakeholder interviews with faculty, staff, and representatives, held from 1:00–5:00 PM. The consultation process will continue tomorrow, September 2, with students, alumni, and other stakeholders scheduled for interviews from 9:00 AM–12:00 noon.

The Philippines, with its rich historical and cultural heritage, has commemorated National Heroes Day for nearly a century. While we honor prominent Filipinos who helped shape the nation, we also remember the countless patriots whose names are unknown but whose sacrifices advanced the cause of nationhood and freedom from foreign powers.

Heroes do not emerge only in times of war or crisis. The pursuit of peace founded on justice and inclusive development calls on every generation to rise above individual circumstances and serve the common good. As long as the spirit of bayanihan and patriotism lives in Filipinos, new generations of heroes will continue to answer the call of their times.

This National Heroes Day, the University of the Philippines invites everyone to reflect on the lives and examples of Filipinos who, from diverse backgrounds, carry forward the meaning and legacy of heroism and inspire us to build a better future together.

LOOK | UP-BDI Caravan arrives at UPOU

The University of the Philippines Open University (UPOU) welcomed the University of the Philippines–Bangsa Development Initiative (UP-BDI) Caravan at the CCDL Auditorium, UPOU Headquarters, on August 25, 2026.

A flagship programme of UP President Angelo Jimenez and a special programme of UP Mindanao, UP-BDI connects UP units with local government units, ministries, and communities in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) to foster sustainable development partnerships.

UP Mindanao UP-BDI Programme Coordinator Asst. Prof. Maynard Usares presented the initiative’s strategic areas, alongside presentations on UPLB’s Project SARAi and UP Manila’s Telemedicine Project—both UP-BDI partners in the BARMM.

The caravan opened opportunities for UPOU and UP-BDI to explore collaborations, particularly through UPOU’s expertise in Open and Distance e-Learning (ODeL) to support accessible education and development in the Bangsamoro.

Our first batch of 40 Doctor of Medicine students for AY 2026–2027 comes from diverse backgrounds, regions, and stories!

🔹 40 enrollees (25 women, 15 men)
🔹 5 members of Indigenous Cultural Communities
🔹 3 students from Geographically Isolated and Disadvantaged Areas (GIDA)
🔹 1 from UP School of Health Sciences (SHS) – Koronadal Campus
🔹 Mostly Biology-related degree holders, alongside Psychology, Food Technology, Medical Laboratory Science, Nursing, Dental Medicine, Pharmacy, Public Health, and even a Mechanical Engineer
🔹 Coming from Davao, SOCCSKSARGEN, Northern Mindanao, BARMM, Caraga, NCR, and beyond

Every institution is shaped by the people who choose to stay, serve, and grow alongside it.

For UP Mindanao, one of those person is Rene Estremera, Public Relations Officer of the Public Relations Office. Since joining the University in 2005, Rene has witnessed UP Mindanao through five Chancellors, bringing with him his craft in writing and storytelling and helping tell the University’s story along the way.

His journey is one of commitment, creativity, and a lasting dedication to service.
