LOOK | 2026 PCAARRD GAD Training Series Batch 1 in Davao City

For the first time, the DOST-PCAARRD held its Gender and Development (GAD) Training Series in Davao City on October 5–9, 2026, bringing capacity-building opportunities closer to Mindanao-based researchers and project leaders.

The training was organized jointly by DOST PCAARRD through its Gender and Development Program (GADSPU) and Socio-Economics Research Division (SERD), together with the GAD Laboratory in the Agriculture, Aquatic, and Natural Resources (AANR) Sector, UPMin Office of Research, University of the Philippines Mindanao, also a DOST-supported/funded project.

Through workshops and expert-led sessions, the initiative aims to strengthen inclusive research practices, address gender barriers, and promote equitable opportunities across the AANR sector.

LOOK | PGC Mindanao expands Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) genomic surveillance in Mindanao

During the press conference of the 16th Health Research and Development Expo on October 12, 2026, PGC Mindanao Director Dr. Aleyla de Cadiz discussed a two-year genomic surveillance project examining the genetic profiles and geographic transmission patterns of HIV strains in Davao City and Tawi-Tawi from 2025 to 2026.

The findings of the project are expected to provide evidence to guide Department of Health (DOH) policy recommendations, particularly on HIV patient monitoring and epidemiological surveillance across the Philippines.

THE PHILIPPINE Genome Center Mindanao is conducting genomic surveillance to address the transmission and changing demographics of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) cases in the Davao Region and Mindanao.

LOOK | 2026 Interagency Sportsfest UPMin Highlights

Seventeen government agencies gathered on October 13, 2026, at the University of Southeastern Philippines (USeP) Gymnasium, Obrero Campus, for the opening program of the 2026 Inter-Agency SportsFest (IASF), hosted by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources XI (DENR XI).

Anchored on this year’s theme, “One Goal, One Spirit: Demonstrating Strength and Sportsmanship in Public Governance,” the event celebrates teamwork, healthy competition, and camaraderie among public servants while promoting physical fitness and well-being.

Adding to the excitement, the University of the Philippines Mindanao (UPMin) was hailed champion for the third time in the TikTok Dance Challenge, showcasing the creativity, talent, and team spirit of its representatives.

Beyond the competition, the SportsFest provides an opportunity for government employees to strengthen inter-agency relationships and foster unity through sports.

LOOK | Highlights of the Inaugural Episode of Chain Reaction: Agri-Aqua Value Chain Dialogues

The Agri-Aqua Value Chain Laboratory (AAVC Lab), in collaboration with the Land Reservation Management Office (LRMO), successfully conducted AVCDE1: Stakeholders’ Forum, on October 1, 2026, at the University of the Philippines Mindanao. The forum was held in a hybrid format, welcoming participants onsite and via Zoom.

Anchored on the theme “Cultivating Common Ground: Co-Creating Solutions with Stakeholders for Sustainable Communities in the UP Mindanao Land Reservation,” the forum brought together farmer-beneficiaries, government agencies, private sector representatives, project implementers, and other stakeholders to exchange experiences, discuss challenges, and explore opportunities for collaboration.

Presentations and open discussions highlighted the need to strengthen farmer associations, technical training, business support, and enhance coordination among institutions to sustain community support beyond project implementation.

LOOK | UP Mindanao marks successful 3rd External Quality Assurance (EQA) Review for BSFT and BS ABE Programs

On October 6-8, 2026, the BS Food Technology (BSFT) and BS Agribusiness Economics (BSABE) programs were evaluated through an EQA within UP System. The reviewers were Prof. Patricia Anne G. Nazareno PhD; Prof. Evangeline C. Amor, PhD; Assoc. Prof. Dennis John F. Sumaylo, PhD; and Prof. Corazon L. Abansi, PhD.

The EQA provided valuable insights and recommendations to guide the strengthening of academic programs and enhancement of practices and delivery of education. This is another milestone that reinforces the institution's commitment to excellence.

LOOK | UP celebrates collaborative study and findings on Philippine Eagle genome

On October 2, 2026, researchers from the Philippine Eagle Foundation (PEF) and UP Philippine Genome Center (UP PGC) gathered in celebration of their partnership and collaborative study, which yielded groundbreaking insights into the genome of the critically endangered Philippine Eagle.

Representing UP Mindanao at the Executive House in UP Diliman were Chancellor Lyre Anni E. Murao, Aleyla E. de Cadiz, PhD, Assistant to the Executive Director for Philippine Genome Center Mindanao, and Assistant Professor Mae A. Responte, PhD.

LOOK | "Fishing Along the Davao City Coastal Road: Narratives of Displacement and Resilience", authored by Raymundo R. Pavo and Ryan C. Songcayauon, is published in the Philippine Journal of Public Policy (PJPP).

The study examines how coastal infrastructure development affects the livelihoods, ecosystems, and communities of small-scale fisherfolk along Davao City Coastal Road. It also highlights the need for inclusive coastal planning, sustainable development, and community-centered policies.

Urbanization and infrastructure development projects are frequently celebrated as milestones of economic progress. However, when big-ticket road construction intersects with coastal spaces, it often disrupts the daily survival, livelihood spaces, and sense of place of small-scale fishing communities.

We are pleased to feature the journal article "Fishing Along the Davao City Coastal Road: Narratives of Displacement and Resilience" published in the Philippine Journal of Public Policy (PJPP). Authored by Raymundo R. Pavo and Ryan C. Songcayauon, this study examines the socio-cultural, ecological, and economic realities behind urban expansion projects, shedding light on the disruptions experienced by fishing households along coastal Davao City.

⚙️ The Need for Safe Boat Docking & Passage: Examines how replacing natural shorelines with dikes forced fisherfolk to invent makeshift floating barrels for their vessels, navigate narrow and restrictive box culvert passages, and cope with heightened security risks.
🏝️ Changes in Fishing Practices & Ecosystems: Documents the loss of critical marine and mangrove habitats (such as spawning grounds and nipa palms) that has led to diminished fish catches and altered traditional credit-vending practices in the neighborhood.
🦀 Lack of Social Preparation & Demolitions: Highlights the displacement of informal settler households across study sites like Barangays Talomo, Matina Aplaya, and 23-C, alongside anxieties surrounding occupational immobility and housing loss.

𝐅𝐑 𝐒𝐨𝐥 𝐯𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐬 𝐔𝐏 𝐌𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐨 𝐨𝐧 𝐎𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝟕, 𝐚𝐝𝐯𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐬 𝐝𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐜𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐠𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐟𝐚𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐲 𝐰𝐞𝐥𝐟𝐚𝐫𝐞

Yesterday, October 7, Faculty Regent Early Sol Gadong visited UP Mindanao and met with Chancellor Lyre Anni E. Murao to discuss initiatives that advance democratic governance, faculty and REPS welfare, and accessible mechanisms for addressing workplace concerns in the Constituent Unit.

Among the initiatives undertaken during Chancellor Murao’s tenure are:

✅ Strengthening democratic governance through sectoral representation in the Chancellor’s Management Committee. During the 1412th Board of Regents meeting last September 24, President Angelo Jimenez committed to institutionalizing this practice across all Constituent Units. Union representation has likewise been ensured in the Division and College Academic and Personnel Committees (APCs).

✅ Providing tangible support for REPS through the establishment of a dedicated REPS Development Fund.

✅ Reinforcing internal mechanisms for resolving concerns through the operationalization of the Grievance Committee.

FR Sol also sought the UP Mindanao administration's support in operationalizing the Committee on the Protection and Promotion of Academic Freedom and Human Rights, establishing a CU-based Faculty Welfare Council, and conducting CNA Orientation for Administrators.

During the dialogue, the All UP Academic Employees Union presented Chancellor Murao with a copy of the Collective Negotiation Agreement (CNA) and the 40k Professional Development Grant (PDG) Proposal. The Acad Union called on the administration to support the 40k PDG and a rights-based university anchored on equality, justice, and life with dignity for all members of the UP community.

Present at the dialogue were Asst. Prof. Rodgessa A. Lopez (All UP Academic Employees Union-Mindanao Chapter Officer), Vice Chancellor for Administration Leo Manuel B. Estana, Assoc. Prof. Rommel Real (All UP Academic Employees Union-Mindanao Chapter President), Prof. Rommel Rodriguez (National President, All UP Academic Employees Union), Chancellor Lyre Anni Murao, Faculty Regent Early Sol Gadong, Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Maria Stella Salazar, and Ms. Blaise Sigue (All UP Academic Employees Union-Mindanao Chapter Vice President for REPS).

The dialogue is part of FR Sol's commitment to foster communication between university administration and rank-and-file, and to ensure that governance remains responsive to the concerns and welfare of the people who make up the University.
