The University held the โ€œTraining on Package of Technology on Field Establishment, Management, Climate-Smart IPM on Banana Production and Vermicompostingโ€ on June 10, 2026. Held at the R&D Conference Hall, Diffun Campus, this extension activity provided free training to local farmers and peopleโ€™s organizations.

Spearheaded by personnel from the QSU-Banana Resources Research Center (BRRDC) and the Vermitechnology Project, the event commenced with an opening program. Dr. Hermenegildo F. Samoy, Jr., University President, shared how the centerโ€™s disease-free plantlets have been boosting local livelihoods and directly supporting the provincial government's goal to become a major banana producer in the region. Proudly revealing the institutionโ€™s ability to supply plantlets even to neighboring provinces, he urged the participants to make the most of this expert-led learning experience.

The technical lectures started with an in-depth session on the Package of Technology on Field Establishment, led by Ms. Elizabeth R. Oppuer, BRRDC Center Chief. Her lecture focused on the critical early stages of plantation setup, ranging from soil selection to optimal spacing.

Following her, Mr. Henry R. Ignacio gave a vital lecture on Integrated Pest Management (IPM) for bananas. He detailed organic and low-chemical intervention methods to combat common pests and diseases, providing farmers with cost-effective alternatives to heavy chemical pesticides. Ms. Devorah Jane Buado, BSF faculty member and Vermitechnology Project in-charge, delivered a specialized lecture on Vermi Production. Her session focused on the strategic utilization of African nightcrawlers (Eudrilus eugeniae), explaining how these highly efficient earthworms serve as biological accelerators to convert organic agricultural waste into premium, nutrient-dense soil conditioners suitable for banana cultivation.

For the afternoon session, Mr. Allan Greguel Barayuga toured the participants through the vermicomposting facility while conducting his interactive lecture and demonstration. The participants also visited the laboratory to gain a deeper understanding of the production process for tissue-cultured bananas.

The training team adopted the Farmer Field School (FFS) approach to provide experiential and participatory learning, using Ilocano throughout the sessions to ensure that technical concepts were easily understood.

The event concluded with the formal awarding of certificates to the participants and closing remarks delivered by Dr. Dyanika P. Nolasco, R&D Director of Diffun Campus. Through this targeted extension program, the University continues to equip farmers with the necessary knowledge and skills to enhance banana productivity, improve income opportunities, and achieve a greener, more sustainable agricultural future for Quirino province.
