University of the Philippines Population Institute (UPPI)

University of the Philippines Population Institute (UPPI) The UPPI was formally established as a unit of the University of the Philippines on November 1964 with an initial grant from the Ford Foundation.

It is the only academic institution in the Philippines offering graduate level training in Demography and Population Studies. It has two degree programs, Master of Arts in Demography (MA Demo) and Master in Population Studies (MPopS). As an academic unit, UPPI performs the three-pronged function of teaching, research, and extension. Through its links with the government, local and international ag

encies, it plays an important role in the analysis of population-related issues by way of a strong program of research and extension backed up by facilities for analysis of survey data and a data archive of surveys on population-related courses.

In celebration of this yearโ€™s theme, "Different Contexts, Common Aspirations," we are highlighting the changing work aspirations of Filipino children.

Childrenโ€™s work aspirations are heavily shaped by gender socialization. For instance, 10-year-old boys aspire to work in fields traditionally stereotyped as male-dominated (e.g., construction, law enforcement, engineering), while 10-year-old girls expressed interest in occupations stereotyped as โ€˜feminineโ€™ (e.g., creative, nurturing, or caring roles).

Data from the first wave (2016) and sixth wave (2022) of the Longitudinal Cohort Study on the Filipino Child (LCSFC) were used to make the comparison. LCSFC is a national study that tracks transitions faced by young Filipinos in relation to the implementation of Sustainable Development Goals, following them from age 10 in 2016 until they reach 24 in 2030.

Tracking the work aspirations of the youth is vital in laying the groundwork to guarantee opportunities and a sustainable future for all - as young people across different cultures and countries continuously strive to achieve.
