: Silliman University formally unveiled the Magdamo Bronze Plaque on April 10, 2026, at the Guillermo and Mercedes Magdamo Hall, home of the Department of Religion and Peace Studies. The marker commemorates the generosity of the late Rolando V. and Helga Matilde S. Vogt-Magdamo, whose donation continues to support the University’s academic and spiritual mission.

The unveiling ceremony held added significance as it coincided with what would have been the couple’s 54th wedding anniversary. Longtime members of the St. John Presbyterian Church in Reno, Nevada, the Magdamos were remembered for their enduring commitment to faith, service, and education—values reflected in the institution they chose to support.

Present at the event were SU President Dr. Betty Cernol McCann, Divinity School Dean Asst. Prof. Lope B. Robin, Department of Religion and Peace Studies Chair Asst. Prof. Christopher A. Burgos, along with faculty and staff of the Silliman University Divinity School, members of the University administration, SU Student Government executives, and family and friends of the Magdamo family.

The ceremony served as both a tribute and a reminder of the lasting impact of philanthropy in advancing education and nurturing communities grounded in faith and peace.

: Silliman University (SU) marked a significant moment in preserving local heritage through the re-dedication of The Negros Chronicle newspapers on March 26, 2026, held at the Robert B. & Metta J. Silliman University Library.

The ceremony commemorated the donation of 53 bound volumes of the publication, a collection spanning over five decades since its establishment in 1973.

As one of the province’s pioneering newspapers, The Negros Chronicle stands as a vital historical record, offering insight into the social, cultural, and political developments that shaped different periods in Negros Oriental.

The event brought together key figures from the academe, government, and media, reflecting a shared commitment to safeguarding the region’s documentary heritage. Among those present were Silliman University President Dr. Betty McCann, Provincial Tourism Board Executive Director Woodrow Maquiling Jr., and Tourism Council member Glynda Descuatan, alongside members of the local media. Representing local government were City Mayor Manuel Sagarbarria through Assistant City Administrator Dinno Depositario, and Governor Chaco Sagarbarria through Provincial Tourism Officer Maquiling.

The highlight of the ceremony was the formal entrustment of the collection by Publisher-Editor Ely Dejaresco to the university library, ensuring its long-term preservation, accessibility, and continued use for historical research.

This gesture reinforces the role of academic institutions as stewards of knowledge and cultural memory, safeguarding primary sources that allow future generations to trace the unfolding of events across time.

Adding a personal and celebratory note to the occasion was the birthday of Dejaresco, making the gathering not only a tribute to the enduring legacy of The Negros Chronicle but also a recognition of the individual who helped sustain its voice through the years.

: Silliman University (SU), through its College of Performing and Visual Arts (COPVA) and the Culture and Arts Council (CAC), is hosting the Asenso Musika: Symphonic Band Summer Workshop, culminating in a recital on April 17, 2026, at 4:00 PM at the Claire Isabel McGill Luce Auditorium.

The recital features the Calamba National Comprehensive High School Symphonic Band, with special participation from the Silliman University Concert Band, and serves as the culminating performance of a 10-day intensive residency held on campus from April 8 to 17.

The Asenso Musika program underscores Silliman’s continuing commitment to arts education, cultural exchange, and community extension. Through COPVA’s faculty and CAC’s institutional support for cultural programming, the University provided both the academic framework and performance platform for the young musicians’ training and artistic development.

The residency brought together 44 student musicians from Calamba, Misamis Occidental, for advanced instruction in symphonic band performance, jazz techniques and improvisation, ensemble cohesion, musical interpretation, and leadership development. Participants engaged in daily rehearsals, masterclasses, and collaborative learning sessions led by music educators from COPVA, headed by Dr. Diomar C. Abrio.

This initiative builds on earlier training workshops conducted in July 2025 by the same COPVA faculty, which laid the foundation for the band’s formation and growth. The Calamba National Comprehensive High School Symphonic Band was established through the initiative of Calamba Mayor Dr. Luisito Villanueva Jr., an SU alumnus, to strengthen the school’s Special Program of the Arts and expand access to quality music education.
Anchored on the theme “Unity in Sound: Cultivating Musicianship in the Symphonic and Jazz Band Ensemble,” the workshop highlights both individual excellence and collective artistry, principles central to SU’s Whole-Person Education.

The program is implemented in partnership with the Local Government Unit of Calamba and the Provincial Government of Misamis Occidental, with support from Governor Atty. Henry S. Oaminal.

The April 17 recital showcases the participants’ artistic growth and reflects Silliman University’s role as a hub for arts training and cultural collaboration, bringing together institutions and communities in nurturing the next generation of Filipino musicians.
