It’s August, which means the most awaited time of the year for the Silliman community has officially arrived! As Silliman University celebrates its Founders’ Day, students, faculty, and alumni from all over the world gather to relive memories, catch up with old friends, and honor the rich heritage of SU.

The iconic Hibalag Booth Festival has been a cherished centerpiece of Silliman’s Founders’ Day celebrations dating back to 1950! The word "Hibalag" comes from the Cebuano term for "getting together"—a perfect fit for how student organizations unite to build temporary booths and host vibrant festivities at Ravello Field. More than just booths, performances, and fun, Hibalag is a timeless tradition deeply rooted in Sillimanian identity and community spirit.

📚 | STORIES REDISCOVERED, PERSPECTIVES RENEWED

The English Club of the College of Education–Silliman University (ECCOES) successfully held “Navigating Literature in the 21st Century Education: A Lecture Series on Philippine Mythology and Folklore and Children’s & Adolescent Literature” on August 18 at the Audio Visual Theater (AVT) as part of Hibalag 2026.

The lecture series featured John Dante, who discussed “Old Myths. New Myths, Our Myths,” exploring the continuing presence of mythology across literature and different forms of media, and Ian Rosales Casocot, who presented “Stories for Children, Stories for Ourselves,” highlighting how children’s and adolescent literature can foster literacy, empathy, identity, and a deeper understanding of others.

Students and faculty from Silliman University, St. Paul University Dumaguete, Colegio De Santa Catalina De Alejandria, and Foundation University came together for a morning of stories, questions, and reflection.

Beyond introducing new literary ideas, the event encouraged participants to listen with openness, think critically, and engage with perspectives different from their own—not necessarily to change what they believe, but to broaden how they understand stories, culture, and the world around them.

From rediscovering old stories to encountering new perspectives, the lecture series left participants with strengthened minds, deeper appreciation for literature, and stories worth carrying forward.

For our final Fun Fact Friday of the month: whenever someone says they’re “out in the boondocks,” they’re actually speaking Tagalog.

The Silliman University Senior High School poets took center stage on July 29 at the First Floor of the Silliman University Library as the SUSG Socio-Cultural Committee, in partnership with the Silliman University Filipino Department, hosted Likha: Tula ng mga Makabagong Makata— a Filipino poem-writing contest that challenged students to explore the theme “Wikang Filipino at AI: Pananaliksik at Tulay sa Yaman ng Impormasyon."

The contest invited Senior High School students to reflect on the evolving theme. Armed with nothing but pen, paper, and passion, participants crafted verses that wrestled with identity, innovation, and the enduring power of language in the digital age.

The event stood as a testament to the commitment to nurturing both cultural pride and critical thinking among its youth— proving that even in an era of algorithms and automation, the Filipino spirit of pagkamakata remains very much alive.

Winners will be recognized and celebrated at the Senior High School Tabo on August 19, where the best of these "makabagong makata" will finally receive the honor they've earned.

We would like to express our deepest gratitude to the Silliman University Filipino Department and as well as to the Silliman University Senior High School Council for helping us make this event possible.
