As of February 5, 2026 (3:00 PM), Tropical Storm Basyang (International name: Penha) has strengthened from a tropical depression as it churns over the Philippine Sea, becoming the second tropical cyclone to enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility this year.
Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 2 has been raised in Surigao del Sur and other affected areas, while coastal communities from Surigao to Negros Oriental are also bracing for possible storm surges of up to two meters.
In light of these developments, Silliman University is officially activating its designated evacuation centers to ensure the safety of all students, staff, and campus residents.
