This April, the UP Manila Guidance and Counseling Program joins the international observance of Counseling Awareness Month by highlighting the importance of counseling in fostering student well-being. Within the university community, counseling spaces serve as avenues for reflection, support, and personal development, enabling students to navigate academic demands, life transitions, and everyday concerns with greater resilience and clarity.

Counseling services in UP Manila emphasize the development of practical and adaptive skills that help students manage stress, regulate emotions, and respond constructively to challenges encountered in both academic and personal contexts. Through guided conversations and structured support, students are encouraged to deepen their understanding of themselves, including their values, identities, and goals, which are essential in making informed and meaningful decisions.
The program also underscores the importance of accessible and responsive mental health support within the university. Counseling may serve as an initial point of contact for students seeking help, providing a safe and confidential space where concerns can be explored and, when necessary, referrals to other health and mental health professionals can be facilitated.
Equally important is the commitment to sustaining the well-being of counselors and mental health providers. Upholding professional effectiveness involves continuous self-reflection, adherence to ethical practice, and the maintenance of appropriate boundaries to ensure quality care for students.
In line with this observance, the UP Manila community is encouraged to promote open and respectful conversations about mental health. Engaging with counseling services is a proactive step toward personal growth, and the program remains committed to offering a supportive environment where students can be heard, understood, and guided.
