𝙋𝙃𝙄𝙇𝙎𝘾𝘼 — 𝙣𝙤𝙬 𝙉𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙖𝙡 𝘼𝙫𝙞𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝘼𝙘𝙖𝙙𝙚𝙢𝙮 𝙤𝙛 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙋𝙝𝙞𝙡𝙞𝙥𝙥𝙞𝙣𝙚𝙨 𝘽𝙖𝙨𝙖–𝙋𝙖𝙡𝙢𝙖𝙮𝙤.
Five years of former editors graduating, leaving behind not just memories, but their stories.

And now, we are here again.

This issue of 𝗔𝗲𝗿𝗼𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗲 returns to print after 𝙛𝙞𝙫𝙚 𝙮𝙚𝙖𝙧𝙨.

During that time, the campus did no stand still. 𝙉𝙚𝙬 𝙨𝙩𝙪𝙙𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙨 𝙛𝙞𝙡𝙡𝙚𝙙 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙘𝙡𝙖𝙨𝙨𝙧𝙤𝙤𝙢𝙨. New stories formed in lecture halls, laboratories, training grounds, and within the daily life of the institution. The community continued to grow while the publication waited for another moment to place those stories into print.

Editors who once carried the responsibility of this magazine completed their studies and stepped beyond the campus gates. Their role inside the newsroom came to an end. The standards they practiced, the discipline they showed, and the respect they held for honest campus journalism remained with the publication and with the students who followed them.

Their graduation did not remove their work from these pages. 𝘼𝙧𝙩𝙞𝙘𝙡𝙚𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙮 𝙬𝙧𝙤𝙩𝙚, 𝙥𝙖𝙜𝙚𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙮 𝙚𝙙𝙞𝙩𝙚𝙙, 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙙𝙚𝙘𝙞𝙨𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙮 𝙨𝙝𝙖𝙥𝙚𝙙 𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙪𝙚 𝙩𝙤 𝙡𝙞𝙫𝙚 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙨 𝙫𝙤𝙡𝙪𝙢𝙚. Their names may now belong to alumni, but their voices remain part of this publication.

This magazine carries both the present and the legacy that came before it. These pages hold that work.

Behind every article are students who chose to give something that would represent the voice of the campus. The 𝗘𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗕𝗼𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗳𝗳 continued the responsibility carried by those before them—to keep the stories of NAAP Basa–Palmayo documented and shared.

Within this issue, the life of the campus appears in many forms. Some of them may pass quickly. Some may only exist in memory if no one chooses to write them down.

𝗡𝗘𝗪𝗦 | 𝟭𝟵-𝗬𝗲𝗮𝗿-𝗢𝗹𝗱 𝗣𝗶𝗹𝗼𝘁 𝗘𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝗚𝘂𝗼 𝗟𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗹𝗮, 𝗔𝗶𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗱 𝗪𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗲 𝗥𝗮𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 $𝟭 𝗠𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗖𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗿 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵

On Thursday, October 17, 2024, a 19-year-old Asian-American pilot named Ethan Guo successfully landed in Manila from Davao, using his 50-year-old Cessna 182 Skylane to travel around the world, aiming to set a world record of becoming the first person in history to fly solo to all seven continents and to raise $1 million for cancer research.

During an ABS-CBN News interview, he said, "I had my first introduction to aviation at around 13 years old. I've always loved aviation since I was a kid. I think the whole concept of aviation and flight was so appealing to me.” He earned his private pilot license (PPL) at 17 in Massachusetts, and he is also an Instrument Flight Rules-rated, allowing him to fly using aircraft instruments alone, without visual ground reference.

His dream of traveling around the world assumed a deeper purpose. As his cousin was diagnosed with Stage 4 blood cancer, “there is nothing I can do to directly help him,” he said. Now, in addition to chasing the world record, Guo’s mission is to raise $1 million to support cancer research. During his stops in different countries, he visits hospitals to engage with doctors and researchers, deepening his understanding of the fight against cancer.

Up to this point, Ethan Guo has flown across North America, Europe, Africa, Asia, and Australia, with only South America and Antarctica remaining to complete his journey. Among his most challenging feats was crossing the Atlantic Ocean. He said, "The route is so dangerous because it's north, it's so cold, and the weather is so unpredictable. When you're flying over the ocean with an engine and something goes wrong, you don't have a lot of options, and the Atlantic Ocean is freezing cold.”

According to ABS-CBN News, Guo revealed that flying a small plane is far from glamorous because of its limited space, which forbids him to stock up food and manage to pack just three sets of clothes for his journey.

His Cessna 182 Skylane is equipped with nearly 800 liters of fuel, providing enough capacity for approximately 19 hours of flight. Additionally, a 400-liter ferry tank has been installed in the space of the two removed backseats to further extend his range. To ensure a seamless journey, Guo coordinates with the airports he plans to land at to confirm the availability of fuel.

With more flight plans on the horizon, Ethan Guo’s journey has only just begun. His story serves as an inspiration as he soars not only for personal achievement but also to bring hope and support others. His arrival in the Philippines is undoubtedly a flight that many will remember.

The Philippine State College of Aeronautics (PhilSCA) Basa Air Base – Palmayo Campus, in partnership with the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Floridablanca, Pampanga, and the Jose B. Lingad (JBL) Memorial General Hospital, conducted a bloodletting activity on January 12, 2024, at the Campus Gymnasium.

According to the Community Extensions Services Program Coordinator Assoc. Prof. Mercy P. Guinto, the target number of blood donors was 81 participants, which was based on the registration the day prior. However, in the middle of the activity, she exclaimed that it exceeded the number of expected blood donors, highlighting the willingness of donors to help the needy by donating their blood.

"As a matter of fact, napakalaking tulong nito, 'yung blood donation natin especially sa mga kababayan natin, kasi may mga pagkakataon na nangangailangan sila ng dugo. So, kapag sinabi nating galing sa Floridablanca, lalo na galing sa PhilSCA, nabibigyan sila ng pagkakataon na mabigyan ng libreng dugo," she added.

Moreover, a token of appreciation for blood donors has been given by JBL Memorial General Hospital. Free snacks, water, and a tote bag were given to the donors. The Supreme Student Council (SSC), including the campus faculty, didn’t let the opportunity pass, as they ensured the event was flowing smoothly. Truly, the mass participation of people who want to save lives provides a lifeline for those in need.
