MSU Cultural Museum The MSU Cultural Museum is bridging people into further understanding for various tribes and cultures present in the General Santos City. Mansueto Cuaton.

The establishment of the University Museum in 1990, during the time of the former Chancellor Moner Bajunaid, was initiated by Mrs. Emeberta Nazareth, was then the Manager of the Cultural Affairs Office, with a strong support of Dr. Virginia Buhisan, a then senior faculty from the College of Arts and Sciences and the then Vice Chancellor for Administration and Finance, Prof. It was ideally establis

hed due to the need of the university for the depository of artifacts that are relevant to the cultural heritage of the institution and its vicinity. Sources of collections were from various local residents in the form of donations, loan out and some items were purchased by the university. Collections vary from garments and ornaments of the Maguindanao (the dominant Moro group in Socksargen), T’blolis and B’laans (the Indigenous group in the area) and photo collection in the gallery of some historical sites of Sarangani Province, paintings and art works of local artists and students. There are few tablewares that were collected from the IPs in the area that reflects the history of dynamic economic interaction between Chinese and remnants from Japanese occupation. 40% of the collections were garnered by Prof. In mid 90s, Dr. Buhisan went on schooling so that the museum management were assigned under Mrs. Emeberta Nazareth. At present, the Museum is directly under the auspices of the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Administration and Finance under the direct supervision of Ms. Alma Celesthia Dumalag-Aguja, the Acting Curator.

Today, the Museum of Cultural History and the Arts officially opened an exhibit, "Habing Kabilin" (Woven Heritage), at the MSU-Gensan Library Lobby!

In celebration of National Arts Month, we are honoring the "Warp Ikat Tradition of Mindanao" curated by Mr. Leonardo Rey S. Cariño featuring the works of The Manilikha ng Bayan Lang Dulay and Barbara Ofong (both are Tboli Tnalak weavers) , Yabing Masalon Dulo (Blaan Mabal Tabih weaver), and Samporonia Madanlo (Mandaya Dagmay weaver).

The exhibit will run from February 13 – 26, 2026.

On February 6, 2026, Dr. Masao Imamura of Yamagata University and Dr. Masako Ishii of Rikkyo University paid a visit to the Museum of Cultural History and the Arts at Mindanao State University–General Santos. The scholars were introduced to the museum’s Tri-People concept during a guided tour led by Mr. Halim Tabi and Mr. Jimjay Balandan (museum staff).

On November 22, 2025, students from the@ Mindanao Studies program of the University of the Philippines Mindanao visited the Museum of Cultural History and the Arts at Mindanao State University–General Santos as part of their educational field trip. They were accompanied by their advisers, Professors Edward Estrera and Malaya Lapina, who guided and supervised the students throughout the activity.

The purpose of the field trip was to deepen the students’ understanding of Mindanao’s rich cultural heritage and to expose them to the diverse traditions, histories, and artistic expressions found across the region.
