Mindanao State University โ€“ General Santos is a premier higher-education institution committed to offering quality education to its clients from across SOCCSKSARGEN and other neighboring regions. Mindanao State University โ€“ General Santos was established in 1967. The main campus houses the Universityโ€™s administrative offices, student-support facilities, and seven of its colleges, namely: Agriculture, Business Administration and Accountancy, Education, Engineering, Fisheries, Natural Sciences and Mathematics, Social Sciences and Humanities and its Senior High School Department. A satellite campus also lies at the heart of the city which houses its Junior High School Department, School of Graduate Studies, College of Law, and College of Medicine. In the outskirts of the city, at Brgy. Siguel, a field laboratory is dedicated to the fishery studies of the University. MSU-Gensan has a strong commitment to academic excellence. A testament to this is the successes achieved by its graduates with their top-notch performance in various Board Examinations. To also ensure that its academic programs are at par with the global standard of education, MSU-Gensan has become a member of the Accrediting Agency of Chartered Colleges and Universities in the Philippines (AACUP) accrediting a number of its baccalaureate and post-baccalaureate degree programs. Apart from its mandate of instruction, the University has also established its research capabilities garnering support from various local and national funding agencies for projects and programs that are in line with the research and extension priority areas of the University. At present, the University is conducting various research engagements related to Tuna fisheries, given the Universityโ€™s location in the Tuna Capital of the Philippines, agricultural commodities, such as rice and corn in South Cotabato, environment and natural resources preservation, natural product development, engineering and technology, education, peace studies, and community extension services that focus on technology transfer and skills and capacity building of the people in its serviced communities. MSU-Gensan is also dedicated to championing its various peace initiatives as it gears towards becoming a National Peace University. In support of this, the University has become a pioneer in integrating the Fundamentals of Peace Education into its curricula and partnered with the Commission on Higher Education-Institutional Development and Innovation Grant (CHED-IDIG) to capacitate its faculty force in becoming peace educators. The University also extends support in various capacities to marginalized communities by creating extension works, promoting peaceful engagements, and building community resilience through the efforts of various university units and its Institute for Peace and Development in Mindanao. Furthermore, its Office of International Affairs continues to expand the Universityโ€™s programs internationally by partnering with various universities and colleges for mutual development and collaboration in areas of instruction, research, faculty development, staff exchange, and student mobility. On top of these, the most recent accomplishment of the University is the establishment of its College of Medicine. This pioneer state-funded medical degree program in General Santos and Region 12 is in support of RA 11509 or Doktor Para sa Bayan Law which aims to establish medical scholarships and return service programs to help deserving students to pursue medical education and training. The MSU- Gensan College of Medicine is dedicated to its vision to be a globally-competitive medical institution that produces excellent physicians who are grounded in clinical, academic, research, and public health care. Graduates are expected to cater to the medical needs of underserved communities and improve the quality of life of Muslims and Indigenous people in the region given the challenged health system of the country. Presently, Mindanao State University - General Santos continues with its mandate of delivering quality education and services to all of its stakeholders. Mindanao State University - General Santos hosted the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) Office of Programs and Standards Development (OPSD) evaluation of its Master of Agricultural Business Management (MAM) and Master of Science in Agricultural Business Management (MSAM) programs on September 24, 2026, at the Center for Biodiversity Studies.

The program included the Introduction of MSU - General Santos Key Officials led by Prof. Monsour A. Pelmin, Ph.D., Director of the Quality Assurance and Management Services Office (QuAMSO). It also featured the presentation of the programs, an MSU - GenSan virtual tour, and the presentation of findings by the CHED National Evaluation Team led by Technical Evaluator Dr. Aimee Lynn B. Dupo, with Dr. Josephine R. Migalbin.

The evaluation team provided observations and recommendations aimed at further strengthening the programs, particularly in curriculum, program outcomes, faculty development, and other areas of academic quality and delivery.

In response to the findings, Vice Chancellor for Planning and Development Prof. Randy P. Asturias, D.Eng. emphasized the University's commitment to acting on the recommendations, stating, โ€œWe consider this evaluation not only as a requirement for compliance, but also as an important opportunity for institutional improvement and strengthening our academic programs.โ€
He further assured the evaluation team that โ€œthe University, together with the College of Agriculture, the program heads, faculty, and other offices, will work collaboratively to address all the areas for improvement and ensure that the necessary actions are undertaken.โ€

Meanwhile, Vice Chancellor for Research, Extension and Innovation Dr. Christine Dawn G. Obemio highlighted the University's commitment to strengthening program delivery and developing graduates who can contribute to addressing pressing needs in the community and the nation. โ€œWe wanted to produce innovators, leaders in this field that will help address pressing needs of our community and our nation as a whole,โ€ Dr. Obemio said.

The evaluation underscores MSU - GenSan's continuing commitment to quality assurance and the strengthening of its graduate programs in agricultural business management.

HONORING THE LIFE AND MEMORY OF A BELOVED FRIEND, SON, AND SCHOLAR

Mindanao State University - General Santos mourns the passing of one of our students. Our hearts are with the studentโ€™s family, friends, classmates, teachers, and everyone in the MSU - GenSan community who is grieving this painful loss.

As a community, we remind everyone to be sensitive and careful in handling and sharing information about this sad news. Let us respect the privacy and dignity of the student and the family, and refrain from sharing unverified information, photos, or details surrounding the incident.

To every student who may be feeling overwhelmed or carrying something that feels too heavy to bear, please know that you do not have to face it alone. Do not be afraid to reach out and seek help. Talk to someone you trust, approach your teachers or classmates, or seek support from the Universityโ€™s guidance and counseling services.

Mindanao State University - General Santosโ€™ College of Health Sciences held its first Capping, Badging, and Candle-Lighting Ceremony for nursing students on September 21, 2026 at the Mini Theater CSSH Building, marking a significant milestone for the newly established college.

The ceremony opened with remarks from College of Health Sciences Dean Prof. Jimmart R. Pedrigosa, RN, MAN, DIPHLM, CHA, followed by an inspirational message from MSU-GenSan Chancellor Atty. Shidik T. Abantas, MDM, LLM.

In his message, Chancellor Abantas underscored the realities that future nurses may face in the Philippine healthcare system, emphasizing that their role will require more than clinical knowledge.
โ€œBeing an MSU nurse will demand fierce advocacy, radical resourcefulness, and the courage to fix a broken system,โ€ he said, as he welcomed the students to what he described as โ€œthe toughest yet most vital callingโ€ of their lives.

He also highlighted the historic significance of the ceremony as the first of its kind for the College of Health Sciences, describing the occasion as the beginning of a new chapter for MSU-General Santos and for students who have chosen a life of service.

โ€œThe badge you will wear today carries the name of your college and your university. But most importantly, it also carries the responsibility to take care of the welfare of others,โ€ Chancellor Abantas said.

Guest speaker Dean Athena Jalaliyah Bacaraman-Lawi, RN, MN, MAN, PhD, DScN, Al-Hadj, Dean of the College of Health Sciences of Mindanao State University-Main Campus Marawi, likewise reminded the students of the deeper meaning behind the ceremony. โ€œToday, as you have received your nursing caps, received your badges, and have lighted your candles, you are not only embracing the noble tradition of nursing, but also stepping into a lifelong mission of care, competence, and compassion,โ€ Dean Bacaraman-Lawi said.

She also described the ceremony as a sacred passage that marks the studentsโ€™ transformation from learners of theory into stewards of nursing practice.

The ceremony brought together students, faculty members, parents, university officials, and guests as the first batch of nursing students formally received their caps and badges and participated in the candle-lighting ceremony, symbolizing their entry into the nursing profession and their commitment to service.

Students of Mindanao State University - General Santos joined the Student Walkout and Martial Law Commemoration on September 21, 2026, held in observance of the historical significance of the declaration of Martial Law in the Philippines.

During the activity, Prof. Norman Ralph B. Isla, DComm, Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and Services, addressed the students and emphasized the importance of standing up for what is right and recognizing what they deserve as members of the community. โ€œWe deserve better, not the bare minimum,โ€ Prof. Isla said.

Mindanao State University - General Santos conducted two parallel in-house review sessions on September 17 as part of its 3rd Research, Extension, and Innovation (REI) Week, providing researchers and extension practitioners opportunities to present their work and receive expert feedback.

The 7th In-House Review for Research, held at the Mini Theater of the CSSH Building, presentations under the Science and Technology and Social Science categories, covering various environmental, agricultural, fisheries, infrastructure, education, and social development concerns.

Meanwhile, the 3rd In-House Review for Extension, held at the AVR of the University Library, showcased community-based initiatives in education, health, livelihood, cultural heritage, sports, fisheries, digital literacy, and sustainable food production.

The research presentations were evaluated by Prof. Lowela Siarot-Onggo, PhD of the University of the Philippines Mindanao, Prof. Romiel John P. Basan, PhD, and Prof. Elorde Jr. S. Crispolon, PhD of the University of Southern Mindanao-Kabacan.

The extension review was evaluated by Prof. Siony S. Brunio, PhD of Sultan Kudarat State University, Mr. John Lord L. Auman, RA of the Agricultural Training Institute Region XII, and Prof. Samsia A. Ibrahim, PhD of Cotabato State University.
