Mindanao State University – General Santos was established in 1967. The main campus houses the University’s administrative offices, student-support facilities, and seven of its colleges, namely: Agriculture, Business Administration and Accountancy, Education, Engineering, Fisheries, Natural Sciences and Mathematics, Social Sciences and Humanities and its Senior High School Department. A satellite campus also lies at the heart of the city which houses its Junior High School Department, School of Graduate Studies, College of Law, and College of Medicine. In the outskirts of the city, at Brgy. Siguel, a field laboratory is dedicated to the fishery studies of the University. MSU-Gensan has a strong commitment to academic excellence. A testament to this is the successes achieved by its graduates with their top-notch performance in various Board Examinations. To also ensure that its academic programs are at par with the global standard of education, MSU-Gensan has become a member of the Accrediting Agency of Chartered Colleges and Universities in the Philippines (AACUP) accrediting a number of its baccalaureate and post-baccalaureate degree programs. Apart from its mandate of instruction, the University has also established its research capabilities garnering support from various local and national funding agencies for projects and programs that are in line with the research and extension priority areas of the University. At present, the University is conducting various research engagements related to Tuna fisheries, given the University’s location in the Tuna Capital of the Philippines, agricultural commodities, such as rice and corn in South Cotabato, environment and natural resources preservation, natural product development, engineering and technology, education, peace studies, and community extension services that focus on technology transfer and skills and capacity building of the people in its serviced communities. MSU-Gensan is also dedicated to championing its various peace initiatives as it gears towards becoming a National Peace University. In support of this, the University has become a pioneer in integrating the Fundamentals of Peace Education into its curricula and partnered with the Commission on Higher Education-Institutional Development and Innovation Grant (CHED-IDIG) to capacitate its faculty force in becoming peace educators. The University also extends support in various capacities to marginalized communities by creating extension works, promoting peaceful engagements, and building community resilience through the efforts of various university units and its Institute for Peace and Development in Mindanao. Furthermore, its Office of International Affairs continues to expand the University’s programs internationally by partnering with various universities and colleges for mutual development and collaboration in areas of instruction, research, faculty development, staff exchange, and student mobility. On top of these, the most recent accomplishment of the University is the establishment of its College of Medicine. This pioneer state-funded medical degree program in General Santos and Region 12 is in support of RA 11509 or Doktor Para sa Bayan Law which aims to establish medical scholarships and return service programs to help deserving students to pursue medical education and training. The MSU- Gensan College of Medicine is dedicated to its vision to be a globally-competitive medical institution that produces excellent physicians who are grounded in clinical, academic, research, and public health care. Graduates are expected to cater to the medical needs of underserved communities and improve the quality of life of Muslims and Indigenous people in the region given the challenged health system of the country. Presently, Mindanao State University - General Santos continues with its mandate of delivering quality education and services to all of its stakeholders.
