Official Statement on the 40th Anniversary of the EDSA People Power Revolution

As we did last year, and the year before, we in the College of Law of the Lyceum of the Philippines University shall today be with our countrymen in remembering the events of EDSA in 1986.

We may not all have been there then, but we have all read the accounts, and listened to the stories of those who were.
We all know and shall ever remember that those were among the darkest days of our democracy.

Those whom we drove away then have returned and, with their lies and the money and the treasures they plundered and kept through the decades, have been restored to power. Their sins continue. They once more repress. They again bring darkness in our nation.

We therefore choose to stand with our countrymen on February 25 to remember the phenomenon that was our People Power, and to keep the meaning of EDSA 1986 alive, so it may flourish, and so it may never be forgotten.

They cannot rewrite history and, with their revision of it, relegate the victory that was EDSA of 1986 into the dustbin.

We all know, and shall keep on speaking, the truth.

We cannot allow them, or anyone, to disrespect those who stood on that long avenue in peaceful protest for four days and, in the fourth morning, on February 25, jumped with joy and danced on that street as news that the dictator and his thieving family had fled.

We do this in commemoration of the 40th anniversary of the EDSA People Power Revolution, when our countrymen triumphed in ending that dictatorship and restoring our democracy. We remember not only the courage of those who gathered in peaceful defiance, but the truth they defended: that sovereignty resides in the people, and that no despot stands above the Constitution.

We do this not only to honor the past, but to confront our present without hesitation and to face our future with all fervor to bring back the brightness that comes with true peace and prosperity. We do this to remind ourselves that we did it once, and we can do it again. It is no secret that political power continues to circulate within the same narrow circles, with Filipinos enduring constantly rising costs of living, fragile and even useless public services, and widening inequality. The very things that we strived to ward off forty years ago are met with sinister efforts to dilute the letter and the spirit of our Constitution. These are grave realities used as measures by which we judge whether democracy is truly working.

We do this as members of the legal profession who refuse to treat our laws as mere trinkets. When structures of power restrict genuine democratic participation and weaken accountability, they must be named and challenged. Reform must be real. Accountability must be demanded and enforced.

As law students, we accept that legal education carries responsibility. To study the law is to prepare to challenge institutions, to question abuses, and to stand firm when our principles are tested.

We do this, finally, with resolve. The spirit of EDSA endures wherever citizens choose vigilance over apathy and unity over fear. Democracy does not sustain itself. It survives because people insist that it must.

On February 25, we take a stand to remember, to reflect, and to recommit with clarity and courage.

We will walk the streets of EDSA with pride as One Lyceum.

We may not all have been there then, but we shall tomorrow be with those who were, and we shall do this, most of all, to exalt liberty.

We shall stand and shout never again.
We shall never forget.
