The delegation was led by the Director of the Community Extension Services Office, Daisy B. Ibieza, together with the college extension coordinators and faculty extensionists of Guimaras State University, namely: Prof. Reiner Jun Alminaza, Prof. Gilbert Amistas, Prof. Reynro Herrera, Instr. Alfred John Borreros, and Instr. Revenlie Galapin. They took part in the conference held on April 15–17, 2026 at Tag Resort, Coron, Palawan, Philippines.

With the theme “Next-Gen Extension: Driving Socioeconomic Change for Inclusive Community Development,” the conference convened extension practitioners from various sectors and institutions across the Philippines and other countries. It served as a significant platform for the exchange of knowledge, dissemination of best practices, and the development of more responsive and effective extension initiatives aimed at advancing community development.

During the conference, GSU faculty extensionists presented their research papers across different thematic areas. Prof. Reynro Herrera presented his study under Agriculture, Food, and Development. Prof. Gilbert Amistas and Instr. Revenlie Galapin contributed to the field of Entrepreneurship and Circular Economy, while Prof. Reiner Jun Alminaza and Instr. Alfred John Borreros presented in the area of Engineering, Smart Analytics, and Information and Communication Technology (ICT). These scholarly contributions reflect the University’s sustained commitment to delivering evidence-based and impactful extension programs that not only uplift communities but also promote innovation and long-term sustainability.

The conference further strengthened the competencies of GSU’s faculty extensionists by equipping them with enhanced knowledge, updated perspectives, and renewed motivation to pursue quality extension services. Their participation underscores the University’s continuing dedication to excellence in community engagement and its role in fostering inclusive and sustainable development.

From Support to Success: GSU-CESO Impact Stories and Voices from the Community

Guimaras State University–Community Extension Services Office (GSU-CESO) continues to make meaningful strides in empowering communities through its extension initiatives. These efforts aim to foster sustainable development, strengthen local capacities, and improve the quality of life among partner communities.

In a recent interview with Mr. Josue Villanueva Sr., a member of Tinadtaran, Piña, Agsanayan Agrarian Reform Cooperative, and Mr. Rey Gallo, Barangay Captain of Tinadtaran, Extension Director Daisy B. Ibieza unfolds how the extension activities of GSU have helped the community of Tinadtaran progress and flourish.

As shared by Mr. Villanueva Sr., “Dako gid ang nabulig sang GSU sa amon,” a heartfelt testament to the profound difference the University has made in their lives. His statement reflects the true impact of GSU’s extension programs—uplifting communities and creating opportunities for growth and hope.

Director Ibieza also ensures the continued support to Barangay Tinadtaran through more meaningful collaborations. She emphasized that, “An act towards sustainable extension activity is through collaborative efforts and selfless act of service towards community empowerment.”

With these ongoing efforts, GSU-CESO remains steadfast in its mission to deliver responsive and transformative extension services. Through strong partnerships and a shared commitment to community empowerment, the University continues to turn support into success—creating lasting and positive change in the lives of the people it serves.

𝐆𝐒𝐔 𝐔𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐢𝐥𝐬 𝐊𝐀𝐑𝐈𝐓𝐎𝐍 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐦 𝐢𝐧 𝐒𝐚𝐧 𝐍𝐢𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐚𝐬, 𝐓𝐚𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐭𝐬 𝐄𝐚𝐫𝐥𝐲 𝐋𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐍𝐮𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐲 𝐆𝐚𝐩𝐬

On April 21, 2026, Guimaras State University (GSU) unveiled a community-based learning initiative in Barangay San Nicolas through the activity titled “Unveiling KARITON: Program Launching and Stakeholders’ Orientation.” The initiative, formally known as KARITON: Knowledge-Sharing for Advancing Reading and Numeracy through Intervention, Teaching, Outreach, and Networking, centers on addressing foundational learning gaps among young learners.

The program was initiated by Dr. Jasmin T. Gadian, Dean of the College of Teacher Education, under the supervision of the Office of the Vice President for Research, Extension, Training and Innovation led by Dr. Julius T. Vergara, with extension operations coordinated by Director Daisy B. Ibieza. It is being carried out in coordination with the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) and barangay officials, alongside the existing Pangibabaw Tabao project of San Nicolas Elementary School.

KARITON is structured to assist learners from Kindergarten to Grade 6 in strengthening reading and numeracy, while also extending academic support to selected high school students. Instructional focus is placed on alphabet knowledge, word recognition, and comprehension—core areas identified as recurring gaps among early-grade learners.

The launch drew parents, teachers, barangay officials, volunteers, and pre-service teachers who will serve as tutors. Learning sessions will be handled through guided instruction in Filipino, English, and Mathematics, with barangay-based volunteers supporting implementation on the ground. The approach also places weight on parental involvement, recognizing its role in reinforcing learning beyond structured sessions.

Faculty members from the College of Teacher Education were present to support the rollout, including Dr. Sol M. Basañes (BSED Mathematics), Dr. Criste F. Dilag (BSED English), Dr. Joedar P. Satojito (BEED and Associate Dean), and Asst. Prof. Adora B. Gabayoyo (BSED Filipino). The group contributed to the preparation of instructional materials and teaching guides to be used by tutors during the program’s implementation.

During the orientation, Barangay Captain Hon. Raymund N. Gatinao addressed attendees and pointed to the role of shared effort in improving local education outcomes. Miss Marigold B. Ibieza presented the structure and intended direction of the program, while Director Daisy B. Ibieza spoke on the need for sustained support from parents and community volunteers.

The formal launch was led by Dr. Gadian, with closing remarks delivered by Dr. Satojito, who noted that the program’s continuity will depend on coordinated participation from all sectors involved.

With backing from GSU, DSWD, and the local barangay, KARITON—an initiative aligned with the broader direction of University President Dr. Lilian Diana B. Parreño—is set to move into its next phase, focusing on capability-building for tutors and volunteers ahead of full implementation. The program is scheduled to run from 2026 to 2028, with activities to be carried out within the community it intends to serve.

On March 24, 2026, Guimaras State University (GSU), through its University Community Extension Services Office, convened its 3rd Ceremonial Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) Signing with its partners at the Agri-Eco Convention Hall, Salvador Campus. The activity carried the theme, “Advancing Cooperation through Meaningful Partnerships.”
The program opened with remarks from Dr. Julius T. Vergara, Vice President for Research, Extension, Training and Innovation, who stressed the role of collaboration in extending university services to communities and partner organizations. He noted that partnerships provide a platform for aligning academic expertise with local development needs.
Following the opening message, representatives from the different colleges presented their respective extension programs. The presentations outlined existing initiatives, highlighting areas where collaboration with external partners may be strengthened.
The ceremonial signing of agreements then proceeded, formalizing commitments between the university and its partners. Present during the activity were representatives of both newly established and renewed partner organizations, signifying the continuation and expansion of existing collaborations. The agreements covered areas related to community engagement, capacity-building, and applied research.
Closing remarks were delivered by Dir. Daisy B. Ibieza, Director of the University Community Extension Services Office, who acknowledged the participating partners and emphasized the need for sustained coordination to ensure the effective delivery of extension initiatives.
