LOOK | Nighttime visibility and safety within the Southern Leyte State University (SLSU)-Hinunangan Campus received a major boost following the completion of its solar streetlight installation project aimed at improving campus mobility, security, and sustainability.

A total of 17 integrated solar streetlights have been installed across key areas of the campus, with 12 units specifically placed along the circumferential road. The once dim and unlit roadway has now been transformed into a well-illuminated and safer passageway for students, faculty members, staff, and visitors, especially during nighttime and power interruptions. This improvement directly supports SDG 11 by enhancing campus safety and mobility while fostering a more inclusive and accessible learning environment.

Funded through SMART and the Green Maintenance and Development Fee under the Free Higher Education program for Fiscal Year 2026, the project reflects the institution’s continued investment in innovative and sustainable infrastructure in line with SDG 9. The use of integrated solar lighting systems demonstrates practical innovation in campus development, reducing reliance on conventional energy sources while improving long-term efficiency.

The newly installed solar streetlights operate independently from the power grid, ensuring continuous illumination even during power outages. This renewable energy-based system supports SDG 7 by promoting clean and affordable energy use within the campus. In addition, the solar-powered design reduces electricity consumption and maintenance costs while contributing to lower carbon emissions, reinforcing the campus’ role in addressing climate change in support of SDG 13.

Beyond sustainability benefits, campus officials noted that the integrated lighting system also enhances resilience, particularly during extreme weather conditions. The units are designed for easier securing or removal when necessary, minimizing potential damage during typhoons and severe weather events common in the region.

With the successful completion of the circumferential road lighting project, the campus is preparing for the next phase of infrastructure improvements, including the proposed installation of dual-arm solar streetlights along Maharlika Road and the rollout of smart lighting systems featuring motion sensors and daylight detection technology across campus buildings.

As the solar lights now illuminate campus roads each night, SLSU-Hinunangan continues to strengthen its commitment to building a safer, more innovative, and environmentally responsible academic environment that advances quality education while promoting sustainable development.
