Meet the SEQUOIA Editorial Board A.Y. 2025–2026

Every journey begins with a single step, and this year, the SEQUOIA Editorial Board is ready to move forward together. Guided by passion, creativity, and purpose, our team of dedicated trekkers embarks on a path of storytelling, leadership, and innovation.

Behind every article, caption, and design is a group of individuals who share the same goal—to inform, inspire, and give voice to the stories that matter. With different ideas, talents, and perspectives, we travel the same trail, creating meaningful content that reflects the spirit and experiences of our community.

As trekkers on the go, we are always moving—exploring new perspectives, discovering untold stories, and pushing the boundaries of creativity. Through words, visuals, and ideas, we aim to leave footprints that will inspire others to keep moving forward as well.

Join us as we begin this year’s journey—one story, one step, and one milestone at a time.

DIA DE LOS MU***OS - Final offering

“When the Candles Fade”

The candles are burning low now. Their light trembles like the final heartbeat of a memory, soft and uncertain, but unwilling to die. Around me, the scent of sampaguitas still lingers—sweet, sorrowful, and stubborn. It clings to the night air as if it, too, refuses to say goodbye.

For nights without end, our hearts remembered louder than our grief. We laughed with ghosts, shared meals with shadows, and called out names that time could never silence. For a moment, the world between us blurred—the living and the dead standing together in quiet celebration.

But now, the ofrenda waits for silence. The bread hardens, the candle wax begin to melt, and the petals begin to curl inward, tired from holding so much love. I trace the outlines of your photograph and wonder—can you still hear me when the music stops? Can you still feel the warmth I left for you in every flickering flame?

Each year, I tell myself not to ache when dawn comes. But how do you let go of something that feels so near, only to become air again? The wind passes through the candles, and I imagine it’s you—brushing past, whispering that you were never truly gone.

So I promise once more: when the white flowers bloom again, when the air turns gold and heavy with memory, I’ll build your altar anew. I’ll fill it with light and laughter, so you’ll find your way back.
Until then, I’ll carry you in the quiet spaces—between prayers, between heartbeats, between the living and the dead.

Because Día de los Mu***os - when the departed celebrates life with us - never truly ends.
It only sleeps—
and so does my longing,
waiting for next year’s dawn.

DIA DE LOS MU***OS - All Soul’s Day
the souls of the deceased adults come to collect and eat the offerings that their family placed on the altar. Copal or incense is burned and a path is
decorated with petals of marigolds to guide them in the altar.

“Eclipse of memories and moments”

When the night arrives, and the soft glow of candles begins to dance against the dark, memories come alive in quiet whispers. The air feels heavy, but not with sadness—more like the kind of longing that makes your chest ache in a tender, familiar way. It’s that time of year again when we speak to the ones who can no longer answer, but we still hope they’re listening.

There’s something sacred about preparing the table—pandesal, kutsinta and the drink carefully set beside a candle’s flicker. It’s simple, but it’s love in its purest form. Maybe it’s the only way we know how to say, “I still remember you,” without needing to cry. In every bite and every lighted candle, there’s a story, a life, a bond that refuses to fade.

You can almost imagine them sitting across from you—familiar faces painted with warmth and color, smiling softly as if the distance between worlds had vanished for a night. And maybe, in some strange and beautiful way, it really does. The light reaches them, the scent of the food finds its way to wherever they are, and for a fleeting moment, everything feels whole again.

“Ma, maalala kaya ni papa? Favorite niya ito eh.” That question echoes in the quiet night, carried by love more than doubt. Because even if he can’t answer, the heart somehow knows—he remembers. He always will.

And so we say, “Syempre naman.” Of course he will. Because memory isn’t just what we keep—it’s what we give, every year, every All Soul's Day, when the living and the departed meet halfway through the warmth of light, food, and love that never truly leaves

"Love doesn’t end when life does. It just finds a new way to stay."

DIA DE LOS MU***OS - All Saint’s Day
It is All Saints' Day, the date on which the little angels arrive, who are the souls of those who died as children. On this day all the food is set in in altar

Candles flicker and flowers bloom between dusk and dawn, the little souls return.

One drifts silently through the shadows as the wind blows through the land of the living. In one humble home, unseen by naked eyes, is an ethereal figure. Drawn by the dancing light of the candle and the scent of the wilted flowers, it hovers above the altar. The candlelight embraces the figure, a figure not of flesh and blood, but of spirit with silent purpose. It is an angel of memories, a guardian, a keeper of the bridge between life and what lies beyond.

It wanders as the stars shine through the cold night sky, leading the luminous spirits of children, the "little angels" who flew away too soon, back to the warmth of their loved ones. Leading the little souls to their homes, to the altar where love, scented flowers, a small feast of remembrance, and the soft glow of candlelight await them.

The night isn't filled with sorrow, it is filled with love. The warmth of love that embraces the coldness of the night. The warmth of love that calls even the small souls back home.

DIA DE LOS MU***OS - Day 31st
A new candle is lit, another glass of water, an another white bread and a piece of fruit.
This is for the ancestors. That is, great-grandparents and great-great-grandparents.

“Para Kay Lola”

The air was quiet, heavy with the scent of earth and flowers.
He knelt before the grave, his hard hat glinting faintly beneath the afternoon sun.
“Hello po, Lola,” he whispered, voice trembling but proud. “May dala po akong bulaklak… at paborito mong mani.”

The stone was cold beneath his touch, yet in it, he felt warmth—
a thousand mornings of laughter, the soft hum of lullabies, the steady hands that once guided his own through dreams and struggle.

“Pasensya na po, Lola,” he said, clutching the bouquet tighter.
“Hindi po ako nakadalaw noon… pero may magandang balita po ako.”
He swallowed hard, as if the words themselves were too sacred to speak.

“Engineer na po ako, Lola.”

For a moment, silence.
Then—
a tear fell.
Followed by another.
Until the weight of pride and longing broke him open.

He imagined her smile—
that proud, gentle curve that once told him, “Kaya mo ‘yan, apo.”
And though her voice was gone, he could almost hear her say it again,
carried by the wind, brushing softly against his cheek.

Beneath the solemn sky, he cried not for loss—
but for love fulfilled, for promises kept.

Because even in death, Lola lived on—
in every step he took, in every bridge he built,
in every tear that fell for the dreams they once shared.

Today, on the 31st day of remembrance,
the boundary between life and memory faded once more.
And there, between the living and the dead,
stood a grandson—
no longer just a dreamer,
but the man his Lola always believed he would become.

DIA DE LOS MU***OS - Day 30th
A new candle is lit, another glass of water is placed and white bread is placed for the deceased who left without eating or those who had an accident.

“For the souls who left in haste, a light, a drink, and bread await — so they may never journey hungry.”

DIA DE LOS MU***OS - Day 29th
A candle dedicated to the forgotten and the helpless

— Life may meet its end, but memories linger. These candles are lit to commemorate those who were once a part of our lives, even for those ephemeral moments.

Let us honor this 29th those who’ve departed, yet still whisper through our hearts. —
