𝗜𝗜𝗧𝗶𝗮𝗻𝘀 𝘁𝗿𝗶𝘂𝗺𝗽𝗵 𝗮𝘀 𝗠𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗼’𝘀 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘁, 𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗵 𝟮𝗻𝗱 𝗿𝘂𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗿-𝘂𝗽 𝗶𝗻 𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝘆𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝗗𝗲𝗳𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗲 𝗘𝘅𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗲 ‘𝟮𝟱

As the only Mindanaoan delegate to reach the finals, the Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT) Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) Unit Cyber Defense Team finished as second runner-up among 20 universities nationwide at the Philippine Army Cyber Defense Exercise (TRON 2025), held at the Headquarters Philippine Army, Fort Andres Bonifacio, Taguig City on March 8-9.

As part of its campaign to enhance cybersecurity, the event was hosted by the Philippine Army (PA) through the Office of the Assistant Chief of Staff for Command and Control Communications and Cyber Systems (C4S) in celebration of the 128th Founding Anniversary.

The team, led by Second Class Cadet (Cdt. 2CL) Jemar John Lumingkit, a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science (BSCS) student, was composed of BSCS students Cdt. Romeo Giullano Aclo and Cdt. Zach David Maregmen, along with Cdt. Theo Mata from BS Information Technology (BSIT). They were supervised by Sgt. Neil Christian Balayon of the PA Reserve (Res), who is currently pursuing a master’s degree in Computer Applications.

Under the mentorship of Sgt. Darren Adrales PA (Res), Sgt. Jaypee Pedro PA (Res), and Sgt. Eddie Toring PA (Res), and with the support of MSU-IIT alumna, Maj. Joinaire Trillana PA Signal Corps (SC), the team tackled real-world cyber defense challenges, solving digital puzzles to uncover hidden keycodes. In one cryptography challenge, a seemingly ordinary meme image contained encrypted data that competitors had to extract using specialized software to reveal the keycode.

Cdt. 2CL Lumingkit shared how their achievement was a result of their dynamic team effort. “No matter how good you are at hacking or in cybersecurity, if you don’t cooperate or work as a team, it is but a sinking ship.” He then added how the team was honored to be the sole competitor from Mindanao. “As we established that MSU-IIT is a force to be [reckoned] with, we are now [recognized] as worthy contenders [in] this competition.”

Beyond problem-solving, their accomplishment not only boasts technical expertise but also reflects MSU-IIT’s dedication to strengthening cybersecurity and defense education, applying learnings to real-life situations.
