This research reinforces a critical message: vulnerability is not inherent to identityโ€”it is often produced by systems, structures, and practices that fail to recognize diverse human experiences. At the same time, it celebrates the resilience, agency, and strength of communities navigating humanitarian challenges.

MSU-IIT proudly marks its second homegrown Top 1% research publication in 2026 as University Researcher Jaypee S. Yongco and co-authors spotlight transgender lives in humanitarian crises in the prestigious International Journal of Transgender Health, advancing global conversations on gender, vulnerability, and survival across conflict, disasters, and displacement.

The College of Economics, Business, and Accountancy (CEBA) faculty of MSU-IIT successfully marked the final stop of its highly impactful financial literacy workshop series at Tipanoy Elementary School last May 28, 2026.

This event concluded a rigorous and intensive four-day extension project. Led by Asst. Prof. Shiny Rose S. Narit, the dedicated CEBA faculty and training assistants travelled across the city to empower educators at Echavez, Acmac, Kiwalan, Miguel Obach Memorial, Abuno, and Tipanoy Elementary Schools.

The extension project, which started last year, aimed to empower various sectors of society. Driven by a shared mission to cultivate a more financially resilient society, this project was brought to life through a powerful extension partnership with the Gender and Development Center (GADC) of MSU-IIT, Department of Education - Division of Iligan City, MSU-IIT National Multi-Purpose Cooperative (MSU-IIT NMPC), and the Home Development Mutual Fund (HDMF) through the Pag-IBIG Fund Iligan Branch. The team conducted an intensive 1-day session on savings, practical budgeting, debt management, investing, and the benefits of becoming a member of the two partner entities.

Through this collaborative effort, the extension project continues to bridge the gap between financial literacy and community empowerment.

A heartfelt thanks to the Department of Education - Division of Iligan City and the school heads and principals, specifically: Maโ€™am Maria Luz C. Jaudian, Ph.D., Maโ€™am Amadelle Mitzel Galindo-Acero, Ph.D., Maโ€™am Berlyn Borbon, Maโ€™am Corazon Duhaylungsod, Sir Romeo Larita, and Maโ€™am Jasmin Tampos, for the constant support in this endeavor. The team is also grateful to the partner institutions, MSU-IIT NMPC and Pag-IBIG Fund, that made this extension project a resounding success.

In a vibrant celebration of Pride Month, MSU-IIT hosted a specialized forum titled "Ebas-ebas sa mga Yoyi-ism: On the Depth of Q***r Expressions," last June 17, 2026 at University Library Theatre.

Co-organized by key institutional bodiesโ€”including the Social Laboratory Unit of the Institute for Policy, Innovation and Leadership (SLU-IPIL), the Gender and Development (GAD) Center, and the Department of Englishโ€”the forum served as an academic and cultural space to explore q***r expressions.

The afternoon featured a powerhouse panel of speakers, including Ian Sebua, John Dantรฉ, Prof. Amado C. Guinto Jr., and Prof. Lourd Greggory D. Crisol, each offering their thoughts on q***rness, q***ring, and q***r expressions.

Following the extensive panel discussions and forum sessions, the event culminated in the official book launch of Pagbuswak, a groundbreaking poetry collection in Binisaya authored by panelist and MSU-IIT professor Lourd Greggory D. Crisol.

Published by Aletheia Publishing, the bookโ€™s title translates to "to open up." The collection deeply explores q***r, or binayot, experiences rooted directly in Iligan City, blending creative depth with scholarly insight to offer a raw, intimate look into local kabayotan life while celebrating the city's unique culinary culture, environments, and festivities.

Through initiatives like these, MSU-IIT continues to actively mainstream gender equality, reinforcing its mission to cultivate an inclusive, progressive, and safe academic environment for the entire university community.

The MSU-IIT GAD Focal Person, Assoc. Prof. Yasmira Moner has joined the co-design team for a major regional leadership initiative for women in the Bangsamoro.

The Governance Fellowship for Bangsamoro Women Leaders convened its core design team for an intensive workshop on June 2โ€“4, 2026, in Davao City. Supported by the Australian Government, the fellowship is an initiative of The Asia Foundation under its Weaving Emerging and Active Voices for Peace and Stability in the Bangsamoro (WEAVE) project.

The program addresses systematic barriers to womenโ€™s participation in governance. Grounded in the Theory U change-management framework, the curriculum builds on a milestone 2025 gathering where cross-generational women leaders mapped out their contributions to regional peace and development.

Representing MSU-IIT, Mr. Jaypee Yongco, University Researcher and GAD - TWG Member, made a significant impact at the 12th World Conference on Womenโ€™s Studies (WCWS 2026) last May 28 - 31, 2026, in Chiang Mai, Thailand, by challenging traditional academic hierarchies and addressing agricultural gender gaps.

Yongco co-facilitated a high-profile publication workshop titled "Feminist Publishing and the Ethics of Care and Mentorship: Rigor with a Heart" alongside Conference Chair Prof. Dr. Diana J. Fox (Bridgewater State University, USA), founder of the Q2 Scopus-indexed Journal of International Womenโ€™s Studies. The session advocated for an "ethics of care" to dismantle the geographic and structural barriers that early-career and Global South researchers face when trying to access prestigious publishing spaces.

He also presented a collaborative study, "Women at the Margins, Men at the Center? A GAD-Framed Examination of Corn Farming Practices in the Philippines," co-authored with Rosalina P. Tan (Ateneo de Manila University) and Oliver Michael C. Narreto (Central Mindanao University). Using a Gender and Development (GAD) framework, the research exposes the systemic invisibility of women in agriculture, questioning why they are excluded from economic recognition and decision-making despite providing vital labor.

Through its participation in WCWS 2026, MSU-IIT reaffirms its commitment to supporting gender equality through a groundbreaking scholarship on the world stage, ensuring that the university is not just participating in the conversation but actively influencing a more equitable future for academia and marginalized communities alike.
