August 5, 2026 marked a significant milestone in Mindanao State University – Iligan Institute of Technology’s (MSU-IIT) continuing efforts to strengthen international partnerships and expand academic collaboration in Southeast Asia with the Ceremonial Signing of Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) between MSU-IIT and 23 Muhammadiyah universities across Indonesia.

Representing MSU-IIT were Prof. Joey Genevieve Martinez, Vice Chancellor for International Affairs; Prof. Ma. Rizalia Teves, Dean of the College of Economics, Business and Accountancy (CEBA); and Asst. Prof. Jessa B. Labitad, CEBA International Affairs Lead. The ceremonial signing was hosted by the Universitas Muhammadiyah Jakarta (UMJ).

On August 4, 2026, Mindanao State University – Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT), represented by Dr. Joey Genevieve Martinez, Vice Chancellor for International Affairs, Dr. Ma. Rizalia Teves, Dean of the College of Economics, Business and Accountancy (CEBA), and Dr. Jessa B. Labitad, International Affairs Lead of CEBA, joined 15 partner universities from Indonesia and Malaysia in an international community engagement program themed “Strengthening Sustainable Batik SMEs’ Green Innovation, Digital Marketing, and Global Partnerships.”

The one-day engagement brought together higher education institutions and batik artisans in Jakarta to promote cultural entrepreneurship, sustainable enterprise development, and the preservation and advancement of cultural heritage.

MSU-IIT History students are expanding their learning beyond the classroom through the 2026 Islamic Southeast Asia Traveling Classroom in Indonesia.

Through field-based engagement, academic exchange, and cultural immersion, they gain deeper insights into the histories, cultures, and diverse Islamic traditions that have shaped Southeast Asia. This meaningful cross-border experience strengthens not only their historical perspective but also their connection with fellow learners across the region.

Today marks the celebration of International Youth Day. The Commission on Higher Education International Affairs Service (CHED IAS) stands alongside the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and global education leaders in upholding the unstoppable momentum of young visionaries recognizing that the future of global higher education relies on empowering youth to turn bold ideas into impactful reality, driving cross-cultural progress and academic excellence across borders.

Established by the United Nations General Assembly in December 1999 following the recommendation of the World Conference of Ministers Responsible for Youth in Lisbon, August 12 was designated as International Youth Day. Since then, the UN and UNESCO have utilized this observance to highlight youth civic engagement, amplify young voices, and address the unique educational and socio-economic challenges faced by the next generation.

Through strategic global academic partnerships, international mobility programs, and cross-border research initiatives, CHED IAS remains dedicated to empowering Filipino youth on the world stage. By providing access to globally competitive higher education, it ensures that our young leaders possess the knowledge, cultural competence, and skills needed to tackle global challenges and build a more sustainable tomorrow.
