Former Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) undersecretary of the Student Republic (SR), Gian Carlo Galvan, is running against Interim Governor Silvino Parcon for the gubernatorial seat of the pioneering College of Global Business and Enterprise (CGBE) student council, citing a desire to "change the system" as his reason for running.
In an interview, Galvan stated that he heard the frustrations of students from various programs under the organization, including complaints regarding additional expenses incurred by students due to sanctions implemented by the organization.
"About sa sobra-sobra nga sanctions, like we all know that HM, Tourism, and Entrep, especially, pati sa Fashion subong, damo-damo sila galastusan... so nabatian ko sa ila nga nagadugang pa gid ang sanctions sa ila nga burden sa balaydan, especially sa mga tawo nga indi gid bala [financially stable]," Galvan added, noting that the superfluous sanctions cause extra financial strain.
In response, Parcon noted that sanctions are intended to encourage student participation in organization activities, for which students are excused from classes, and that the implementation and modes of these sanctions are suggested and agreed upon by the class mayors themselves.
"During the meetings, it was clearly communicated that the collected sanctions will be allocated for community outreach activities, such as donations, gift-giving, and other forms of community outreach," Parcon added, addressing allegations concerning unused sanctions.
Meanwhile, when The Technovator asked Galvan about his status as a fourth-year student with an upcoming internship and how it might affect his term if he wins, he stated that the organization doesn't depend solely on his presence and emphasized his ability to delegate tasks among officers and conduct meetings online.
"If ever magdaog ako as governor, ang OJT ko siguro i-move ko nalang here sa Iloilo, para in case nga in-need ako sa any event, makakadto ako," Galvan said stating his willingness to undergo internship within Iloilo if he wins the race.
When asked about his advantage as interim governor, Parcon stated that he wants the students to decide, regardless of which party holds an advantage.
Parcon also clarified that his position is temporary and depends entirely on whether students choose to elect him permanently.
"I cannot answer that directly because I don't want to be biased. Let the students decide... OIC means the designation is only temporary, not permanent," Parcon said.
In his message to the students of the CGBE, Parcon highlighted his goal to unite the college.
"Goal lang gid namon is to unite everyone. Because when you are together, you are stronger. When you are stronger, you can do everything," said Parcon.
Galvan, on the other hand, appealed to the voters to choose based on competence, character, and experience.
"Indi tungod Kay kilala mo sya or ginapaboran sya sang kadam-an, sya na dayon ang aton dapat pilion. Choose someone who has the competence, credibility, character, experience, and genuine willingness to serve," said Galvan.
The online voting for the pioneering CGBE student council special elections will be held on September 2.
