BATAD, Iloilo | August 1, 2026 — Northern Iloilo State University (NISU) Batad Campus proudly emerged as the Champion in the Municipal Gawad Lunhaw Awards – School Category, an environmental recognition program of the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Batad through the Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office (MENRO).
The prestigious award recognizes educational institutions that have demonstrated exemplary commitment to environmental protection, sustainability, climate resilience, ecological stewardship, and the implementation of innovative environmental programs and best practices.

NISU Batad Campus extends its sincere appreciation to Hon. Mayor Elvira P. Alarcon for her unwavering support and commitment to advancing environmental protection and sustainable development initiatives in the Municipality of Batad. The University likewise expresses its gratitude to MENRO Env. Samuel Dela Vega, Jr. and the entire MENRO team for spearheading the Municipal Gawad Lunhaw Awards and for continuously promoting environmental excellence among educational institutions in the municipality.

The championship reflects the collective dedication, teamwork, and commitment of the NISU Batad Campus administration, faculty, staff, students, and stakeholders who worked tirelessly in preparing for the assessment and onsite validation. Through strong collaboration, the campus successfully demonstrated excellence in environmental governance, greening and campus ecosystem management, solid waste management, climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction, and comprehensive documentation. These assessment areas served as the foundation of the Municipal Gawad Lunhaw Awards.
Preparation for the competition was initiated under the leadership of Dr. Vemnrose A. Clariza-Samuel, former Campus Administrator and Overall Chair of the Gawad Lunhaw Award Committee, together with Dr. Hene L. Hapinat, Pollution Control Officer and Co-Chair, through the organization of a dedicated Technical Working Group that ensured full compliance with all assessment requirements and documentary evidence.

The University likewise expresses its profound appreciation to Dr. Jomartin C. Limson, the new Campus Administrator, for his unwavering support, encouragement, and leadership during the culmination of the competition, which further inspired the campus community in achieving this prestigious recognition.

This remarkable achievement reflects not only the dedication of NISU Batad Campus but also the University's enduring commitment to environmental conservation and sustainable development—one of its fundamental mandates. The University's environmental advocacy was significantly strengthened during the administration of former University President Dr. Bobby D. Gerardo, who championed sustainability initiatives across the NISU System. Today, this commitment continues under the dynamic leadership of University President Dr. Raffy B. Chavez, who remains steadfast in advancing environmental stewardship, climate resilience, and sustainable development as integral components of the University's instruction, research, extension, and community engagement.
As NISU Batad Campus celebrates this milestone, the University also recognizes the invaluable contributions of every member of the Gawad Lunhaw Technical Working Group, faculty, staff, students, alumni, partner agencies, and the Local Government Unit of Batad whose dedication and collective efforts made this achievement possible.

With this victory, NISU Batad Campus reaffirms its commitment to building a greener, cleaner, and more sustainable future, serving as a model of environmental excellence and responsible stewardship for the Municipality of Batad and the entire Northern Iloilo State University System.

TESDA–LGPC Conducts Benchmarking Visit at NISU Batad Campus

BATAD, ILOILO — The Technical Education and Skills Development Authority–Leon Ganzon Polytechnic College (LGPC) conducted a benchmarking activity at Northern Iloilo State University (NISU) Batad Campus on March 4, 2026, as part of its initiative to strengthen institutional practices in agricultural research, extension, and resource generation.

The visiting delegation was welcomed by key officials of NISU Batad Campus led by Campus Administrator Dr. Veminrose A. Clariza-Samuel. Also present were Associate Director of the Office of Research and Development Services (ORDS) Dr. Hene L. Hapinat, Associate Director of Extension Prof. Charmaine Joy C. Ballera, FITS Manager Ret. Prof. Eva S. Montero, BSA Department Chairperson Prof. Lyngielo A. Panes, OIC Dean of the BSA Program Dr. Wilson U. Llegunas Jr., and Associate Director of Income Generating Projects (IGP) Prof. Heidiliza G. Dragido.

The benchmarking activity aimed to provide LGPC with insights into NISU Batad’s best practices in managing agriculture-based research initiatives, extension programs, and sustainable resource generation projects. It also served as an avenue for knowledge exchange and strengthening institutional partnerships between the two institutions.

As part of the visit, the LGPC delegation toured several agricultural production areas and facilities within the campus. These included the dragon fruit production area, water refilling station, vermicomposting and cabbage production facility, lettuce and bell pepper nursery, and various livestock projects such as quail, broiler, native chicken, goat, and piggery. The group also visited the campus cacao project and strawberry production area, which showcase the university’s efforts in promoting diversified and sustainable agricultural production systems.

The activity highlighted the commitment of NISU Batad Campus to advancing agriculture-based research, technology demonstration, and community-oriented development initiatives while providing a learning platform for partner institutions seeking to enhance their own programs.

Through collaborative engagements such as benchmarking visits, both institutions continue to foster innovation, strengthen institutional capacities, and promote sustainable agricultural development in the region.

Northern Iloilo State Univerity, Batad Campus—Key officials, General Services Office (GSO) personnel, and farmworkers from Northern Iloilo State University (NISU), Batad Campus, participated in a benchmarking activity at the Cogon Hills Integrated Farm – Hacienda Libertad in Brgy. Cogon, Panitan, Capiz last December 22, 2025. The benchmarking activity aimed to observe best practices, gain technical knowledge, and explore potential collaborative efforts in research, extension, and campus sustainability initiatives.

Cogon Hills Integrated Farm, owned by Dr. Rose Marie N. Conlu, a retired pediatrician, is a well-known cacao producer in the province of Capiz. Dr. Conlu welcomed the NISU Batad delegation and shared the history of her farm's journey into cacao farming. She led a tour of the cacao plantation, showcasing the different cacao varieties grown on the farm. Farm personnel provided detailed insights into cacao management, demonstrating the processes involved in harvesting, fermenting, drying, and value-adding. They explained how the roasted and ground cacao beans are transformed into chocolate, highlighting the potential for value-added products.

The NISU Batad team headed by Dr. Veminrose A. Clariza-Samuel, Campus Administrator, expressed their gratitude to Dr. Conlu and the Cogon Hills Integrated Farm staff for their generosity in sharing their expertise. The benchmarking activity is expected to contribute to improved future cacao production practices at the NISU Batad campus, ultimately benefiting the university and the local community.
