TESDA–LGPC Conducts Benchmarking Visit at NISU Batad Campus

BATAD, ILOILO — The Technical Education and Skills Development Authority–Leon Ganzon Polytechnic College (LGPC) conducted a benchmarking activity at Northern Iloilo State University (NISU) Batad Campus on March 4, 2026, as part of its initiative to strengthen institutional practices in agricultural research, extension, and resource generation.

The visiting delegation was welcomed by key officials of NISU Batad Campus led by Campus Administrator Dr. Veminrose A. Clariza-Samuel. Also present were Associate Director of the Office of Research and Development Services (ORDS) Dr. Hene L. Hapinat, Associate Director of Extension Prof. Charmaine Joy C. Ballera, FITS Manager Ret. Prof. Eva S. Montero, BSA Department Chairperson Prof. Lyngielo A. Panes, OIC Dean of the BSA Program Dr. Wilson U. Llegunas Jr., and Associate Director of Income Generating Projects (IGP) Prof. Heidiliza G. Dragido.

The benchmarking activity aimed to provide LGPC with insights into NISU Batad’s best practices in managing agriculture-based research initiatives, extension programs, and sustainable resource generation projects. It also served as an avenue for knowledge exchange and strengthening institutional partnerships between the two institutions.

As part of the visit, the LGPC delegation toured several agricultural production areas and facilities within the campus. These included the dragon fruit production area, water refilling station, vermicomposting and cabbage production facility, lettuce and bell pepper nursery, and various livestock projects such as quail, broiler, native chicken, goat, and piggery. The group also visited the campus cacao project and strawberry production area, which showcase the university’s efforts in promoting diversified and sustainable agricultural production systems.

The activity highlighted the commitment of NISU Batad Campus to advancing agriculture-based research, technology demonstration, and community-oriented development initiatives while providing a learning platform for partner institutions seeking to enhance their own programs.

Through collaborative engagements such as benchmarking visits, both institutions continue to foster innovation, strengthen institutional capacities, and promote sustainable agricultural development in the region.

Northern Iloilo State Univerity, Batad Campus—Key officials, General Services Office (GSO) personnel, and farmworkers from Northern Iloilo State University (NISU), Batad Campus, participated in a benchmarking activity at the Cogon Hills Integrated Farm – Hacienda Libertad in Brgy. Cogon, Panitan, Capiz last December 22, 2025. The benchmarking activity aimed to observe best practices, gain technical knowledge, and explore potential collaborative efforts in research, extension, and campus sustainability initiatives.

Cogon Hills Integrated Farm, owned by Dr. Rose Marie N. Conlu, a retired pediatrician, is a well-known cacao producer in the province of Capiz. Dr. Conlu welcomed the NISU Batad delegation and shared the history of her farm's journey into cacao farming. She led a tour of the cacao plantation, showcasing the different cacao varieties grown on the farm. Farm personnel provided detailed insights into cacao management, demonstrating the processes involved in harvesting, fermenting, drying, and value-adding. They explained how the roasted and ground cacao beans are transformed into chocolate, highlighting the potential for value-added products.

The NISU Batad team headed by Dr. Veminrose A. Clariza-Samuel, Campus Administrator, expressed their gratitude to Dr. Conlu and the Cogon Hills Integrated Farm staff for their generosity in sharing their expertise. The benchmarking activity is expected to contribute to improved future cacao production practices at the NISU Batad campus, ultimately benefiting the university and the local community.

Batad, Iloilo – Prof. Charmaine Joy C. Cobrador, Prof. Lyngielo A. Panes, and Dr. Hene L. Hapinat recently conducted a research project in three barangays of Batad, Iloilo, focusing on the corn farming practices of local farmers. The team visited Brgy. Alapasco, Brgy. Pasayan, and Brgy. Caw-i to gather data on corn management techniques before, during, and after harvest.

The survey aimed to understand the current methods employed by corn farmers in Batad, Iloilo; This includes planting, maintenance and post-harvest handling, and pest management which is crucial for identifying areas for improvement and developing targeted interventions to enhance corn production and livelihood in the barangay. The data collected will provide valuable understanding into the challenges and opportunities faced by corn farmers in the municipality. With the future results of the survey, the researchers can identify the best practices, common issues, and areas where farmers may benefit from additional training or resources. This information can then be used to develop extension programs and policies that support sustainable corn production and improve the economic well-being of local farming communities. Such initiatives align with broader efforts to enhance the corn industry and ensure food security.

𝗜𝗡 𝗣𝗛𝗢𝗧𝗢𝗦 📷 | NISU Batad Showcases Cutting-Edge Research at 2025 WARAGWAGAN (Research In-House Review)

Batad, Iloilo – Northern Iloilo State University (NISU) Batad Campus buzzed with intellectual energy last October 21, 2025 as the Office of Research and Development Services (ORDS) hosted the 2025 WARAGWAGAN (Research In-House Review). The event, held at the campus conference room, highlighted the university's commitment to advancing research and innovation.

Miss Angel Mae J. Oblido served as the emcee, guiding the program through its various segments. The event commenced with an opening prayer, followed by the singing of the National Anthem and the NISU Hymn, beautifully rendered by the NISU Batad Chorale.

Dr. Veminrose A. Clariza-Samuel, the Campus Administrator, delivered an inspiring opening message, emphasizing NISU's tagline, "LUPAD," which translates to "fly" in Hiligaynon, encouraging attendees to soar to new heights in research and innovation. Dr. Hene L. Hapinat, Director of ORDS, articulated the Statement of Purpose, setting the stage for a day of insightful presentations and discussions.

Dr. Gilbert C. Biñas, Director of KMITT, introduced the plenary speaker, Dr. Larry B. Deysolong, Vice President of Research and Extension. Dr. Deysolong delivered a presentation aligned with the event's theme, "𝘈𝘥𝘷𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘤𝘩 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘪𝘯𝘯𝘰𝘷𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘪𝘯 𝘈𝘨𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘶𝘭𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦, 𝘵𝘦𝘤𝘩𝘯𝘰𝘭𝘰𝘨𝘺, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘌𝘥𝘶𝘤𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘴𝘶𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘣𝘭𝘦 𝘧𝘶𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦𝘴," providing a broad perspective on the importance of research in these critical areas.

Prof. Charmaine Joy C. Ballera outlined the criteria and mechanics of the presentation sessions and introduced the esteemed panel members for each of the three clusters: Education, Social Sciences, and Product Development; Information and Communication Technology/Emerging Technology; and Fisheries, Agriculture, and Natural Sciences.

𝗜𝗡 𝗣𝗛𝗢𝗧𝗢𝗦 📷 ✨ | Planting of Grafted Cacao Seedlings & Mounting of Project Tarpaulin

A total of 1,237 grafted cacao seedlings representing six different varieties were successfully planted at the NISU Batad Cacao Project Site as part of the ongoing research project of NISU Batad Campus, through the combined effort of Bachelor of Science in Agriculture students.

The activity aims to evaluate the growth performance and adaptability of various cacao
varieties under the local agro-climatic conditions of Batad, Iloilo. The planting activity also serves as a hands-on learning experience for students, enhancing their practical skills in field establishment, varietal identification, and sustainable crop management.

𝗜𝗡 𝗣𝗛𝗢𝗧𝗢𝗦 | Color Tagging of Grafted Cacao Seedlings 🌱

To ensure proper monitoring and documentation of ongoing research efforts, the research assistants and the BSA-3B students color-tagged the grafted cacao seedlings for the project. The activity took place at the College of Agriculture Department on the 2nd of October 2025. It aims to provide each grafted cacao seedling with a unique identification tag to facilitate accurate data recording and growth monitoring.

Led by Prof. Charmaine Joy Cobrador Ballera, the team carefully tagged each grafted seedling. The color-tagging process forms part of the project's commitment to systematic research management and traceability of plant materials. It is important to maintain the integrity of research data to ensure that future observations and evaluations can be appropriately linked to each individual plant. This simple step shows how dedicated the team is in doing excellent and precise research, focused on growing cacao seedlings and building a culture of innovation and sustainability.
