The Department of Biological Sciences proudly congratulates 𝗞𝘆𝗹𝗲 𝗩𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗔. 𝗔𝗿𝗿𝗶𝗼𝗹𝗮, 𝗥𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗛𝗮𝗿𝘃𝘆 𝗣. 𝗔𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘆𝗮, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗝𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗺 𝗔𝗹𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗮 𝗚. 𝗧𝗼𝗹𝗲𝗱𝗼, BS Biology major in Medical Biology students, for presenting their study titled “Phytochemical Screening and In-Vitro Evaluation of 𝘋𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘯𝘪𝘢 𝘭𝘶𝘻𝘰𝘯𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘪𝘴 Merr. Leaf Extracts for Antihyperglycemic and Cytotoxic Activities” during the 30th Natural Products Society of the Philippines (NPSP) Convention with the theme, “Strengthening the Philippine Natural Products Industry through a Unified Roadmap,” held on May 8–9, 2026 at UST Manila Annex, Sta. Rosa, Laguna.

The study was also included in the Society’s Book of Abstracts, marking another milestone in the students’ growing contributions to scientific research and natural products innovation. Guided by their adviser,𝗗𝗿. 𝗟𝗹𝗼𝘆𝗱 𝗢. 𝗕𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗱𝗼, and technical critic, 𝗗𝗿. 𝗛𝗼𝘀𝗲𝗮 𝗗. 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗹, the student researchers showcased the potential of Philippine native plants in advancing studies related to health and biotechnology.

Their participation in this national convention reflects the passion, hard work, and dedication of our student researchers, as well as the continuous support of the Department in nurturing future biologists and researchers.

𝗠𝗶𝗰𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗶𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝗠𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻

Mr. John Robert R. Pelobello, DBS faculty member, together with BS Biology major in Microbiology students Simon Adizas, Sapphira Cabuniag, Princess Veronica Diana, Alfhea Dumadag, Seth Ezra Maceda, Andrea Musnit, Shane Andrei Rotairo, and Mc Clarence Prieto, along with former DBS faculty Jose Mari D. Cerrero, attended the PSM Cluster 2 Symposium.

With the theme “Microbial Innovations Driving Sustainability and Securing Planetary Health,” the symposium brought together students, educators, and researchers to highlight the role of microorganisms in addressing environmental and health-related challenges. The event was held on April 25, 2026 at Bulwagang Balagtas, Polytechnic University of the Philippines, Sta. Mesa, Manila.

This participation reflects the department’s continued support for academic engagement and exposure to current developments in the field of microbiology.

𝗕𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗚𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗕𝗶𝗼𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗹

During the 60th BIOTA Philippines National Convention & Scientific Sessions held on April 16–18, 2026 in Legazpi City, Albay, Mr. Luke Alpert M. Quilantang, faculty member, presented the study “Enzymatic Activity, Mass Production, and Pathogenicity of Local 𝘉𝘦𝘢𝘶𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘢 𝘣𝘢𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘢𝘯𝘢 Isolates” on behalf of his co-authors Ms. Hazel S. Gloria, Ms. Patricia Jane P. Manangan, Mr. John Dalle R. Embalsado, and Ms. Danna Rose A. Ronquillo. The study is guided by Dr. Jonathan R. Digma, Assoc. Prof. Sherine M. Cruzate, and Dr. Ma. Fatima I. Cruzada, and is partially funded by the DOST BEAN Project 2. Dr. Digma was also in attendance at the BIOTA convention.

This presentation reflects the Department of Biological Sciences’ continued commitment to the dissemination of scientific knowledge and to sharing research outputs that advance sustainable, science-based approaches to agricultural pest management through locally developed biocontrol solutions.
