The BRITE Center is honored and grateful to be part of this commendable initiative of the Department of Agriculture-Bureau of Animal Industry through the National Urban and Peri-Urban Agriculture Program, which supports the beekeeping industry, through the distribution of bee colonies to farmers and communities, that helps improve crop pollination and opportunities for the production of honey and other bee products.

Cavite State University (CvSU), through its Bee Research, Innovation, Trade and Extension (BRITE) Center, has been recognized as the Regional Apicultural Center for CALABARZON for its leadership in apiculture research, innovation, and community extension. Through research on honeybees and stingless bees, capacity-building programs, and partnerships with government, academe, and local communities, the BRITE Center promotes biodiversity, strengthens food security, creates sustainable livelihoods, and advances inclusive rural development across the region.

Cavite State University through the BRITE Center took part in the development of an illustrative guide for the Philippine National Standards for Honey - Product Standards- Specifications

🐝 A hive of activity 🍯

The DA-BAFS Technical Services Division (TSD) conducted back-to-back writeshops for the development of knowledge products (KP) for bee-related Philippine National Standards (PNS) from June 8 to 11, 2026, in Tagaytay City.

Together with the Technical Working Group (TWG), the TSD reviewed and refined two draft KPs: the Explanatory Manual for PNS Code of Good Beekeeping Practices and the Illustrative Guide for PNS Honey – Product Standard – Specifications.

The TWG comprises experts from the academe, private sector, and government, including representatives from Benguet State University, Cavite State University, University of the Philippines Los Baños, Apikultura Producers Cooperative, Diesta Meliponiculture Apiary, Bureau of Animal Industry, and the Philippine Council for Agriculture and Fisheries.

These KPs aim to provide a clear and harmonized interpretation of the PNS, supporting its effective adoption and implementation by stakeholders in the beekeeping and honey industry.

The CvSU Bee Research, Innovation, Trade, and Extension (BRITE) Center, in collaboration with the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Alfonso, Cavite, successfully conducted the training-seminar entitled “BEEyond the Hive: Introduction to Beekeeping Batch 33” on June 24, 2026, at Angela’s Events Place, Sulsugin, Alfonso, Cavite.

The activity aimed to equip participants with basic knowledge and skills in beekeeping, deepen their understanding of the importance of bees in agriculture and the environment, and introduce livelihood opportunities through beekeeping. The said event strengthens the partnership between the LGU - Alfonso and the BRITE Center in advancing beekeeping initiatives within the province of Cavite.

The program formally opened with the acknowledgment of participants by Mr. Joel U. Credo, Municipal Agriculturist of Alfonso, Cavite, followed by the welcome remarks of Assoc. Prof. Michele T. Bono, Director of the BRITE Center. An inspirational message was delivered by Hon. Jeffrey James Salamat, Sangguniang Bayan Member and Chairperson of the Committee on Agriculture and Cooperatives. In his message, he highlighted the importance of beekeeping in promoting sustainable agriculture, environmental stewardship, and livelihood development within the community.

Assoc. Prof. Michele T. Bono discussed the topics: “Introduction to Beekeeping” and “Bee Biology,” while Dr. Dickson N. Dimero, Extension and Training Unit Head of the BRITE Center, delivered lectures on “Stingless Beekeeping” and the growing concern of "Honey Adulteration" Participants actively engaged in the discussions and open forum sessions. The activity was moderated by Mr. Manuel Gonzales, who facilitated the flow of the program.

The farmers of Alfonso expressed strong interest in adopting beekeeping technologies not only as an additional source of income but also to enhance pollination of crops in their farms.

The BRITE Center, through its two-year DOST-PCAARRD-funded project, VegeBee, has successfully conducted its 2nd HarBEEst Festival on June 17, 2026, at the CvSU International House 1 Lobby, bringing together its project partners from Indang, Alfonso, Amadeo, and Silang, Cavite, to celebrate the fruits of their hard work and the achievements of the project's implementation.

The event served as a platform for the participating project partners to showcase and market their harvested vegetables and honey, which were produced through the synergy of vegetable farming and stingless beekeeping. Other agricultural products from the participating project partners were also displayed and marketed. The event also helped to achieve one of the project’s goals in improving the livelihoods of local farmers of both genders and increasing visibility for VegeBee products.

With this, the project team continues its goal of empowering farming communities, promoting agricultural sustainability, and creating additional opportunities for vegetable growers and stingless beekeepers of Cavite.

VegeBee HarBEEst Festival 2026!

Halina’t ating suportahan ang ating mga lokal na magsasaka at mga tagapag-alaga ng bubuyog!

Ang “VegeBee HarBEEst Festival” ay bahagi ng proyektong VegeBee (Vegetable Production and Stingless Beekeeping Technology) na naglalayong ilapit ang masustansya at de-kalidad na ani ng ating mga magsasaka sa mga mamimili. Tampok dito ang sari-saring produktong agrikultural at mga likhang-kamay mula sa mga bayan ng Alfonso, Amadeo, Indang, at Silang, Cavite.

Tara at sama-sama nating ipagdiwang ang bunga ng sipag at dedikasyon ng ating mga magsasaka.
