December 19-20, 2025 | The College of Arts and Sciences Student Association (CASSA) joined the Department of Economics under the College of Arts and Sciences in the conduct of its two-day extension activity, which aimed to uplift the economic and social well-being of the Badjao Tribe in Barangay Bus-Bus, Jolo, Sulu. Attendees included Badjao inhabitants, students, and officials from Barangay Bus-Bus. The program began with a welcome address by Dr. Nuryneil M. Joe, followed by opening remarks from Assoc. Prof. Hja. Merhama M. Sammah, who shared the importance of the event and thanked everyone for attending. Meanwhile, the Chairwoman of Barangay Bus-Bus, Hon. Almaida A. Undug, represented by Officer-in-Charge Hja. Nur-In Jul-Alih, expressed gratitude to the university for choosing their community.
Talks on livelihood, money management, and culture were given by Prof. Ma. Cecilia S. Caldoza, Prof. Fatima Nerissa M. Jauhari, and Prof. Nuryneil M. Joe, sharing insights on budgeting, starting small businesses, and respecting different cultures. Participants discussed steps for the Badjao community's development. CASSA extends its heartfelt gratitude to MSU-Sulu Chancellor Dr. Nagder J. Abdurahman for the unwavering support, Dr. Ma. Cecilia S. Caldoza, Dean of the College, for her exceptional leadership, and to Dr. Nuryneil M. Joe and Mr. Jumar S. Makam for leading the extension efforts to the Badjao community.
This initiative aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 1 (No Poverty), Goal 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), and Goal 10 (Reduced Inequalities), promoting economic empowerment and social inclusion for the Badjao community. The university hopes to continue supporting communities like the Badjao in the future.
