CPSU Gathers Campus Journalists in System-Wide Training to Strengthen Media Practice
KABANKALAN CITY - Student journalists from ten campuses and extension class of Central Philippines State University (CPSU) converged for a blended, university-wide campus journalism training that brought together members of The Cenphilian Publication (TCP) editorial boards yesterday, April 8, 2026, providing a collaborative space for campus writers, editors, and creatives to refine their craft, reflecting the evolving landscape of student media in a multi-campus university system.
Anchored on the theme “Training Student-Journalists the Newsroom Way,” the training emphasized a practical and immersive approach that mirrors the demands of contemporary journalism. In an era where information is fast-paced and platforms are increasingly digital, the newsroom-style framework allowed participants to move beyond passive learning and into real-time application that simulate actual media work. This approach highlighted the relevance of adaptability, critical thinking, and ethical reporting in today’s media environment.
“This activity is designed to equip you with the essential principles, practices, and ethical standards needed in performing your roles as campus journalists. More importantly, this training adopts a newsroom approach where learning goes beyond theory and focuses on real-world application. Through hands-on activities and guided outputs, you experience how professional journalists think, write, edit, and present stories. Ultimately, we aim to develop not only your technical competencies but also your discipline, integrity, and confidence in producing outputs worthy of publication,” said TCP Main Campus Adviser Josephine Asuncion R. Emoy.
The training featured a roster of experienced practitioners who facilitated both lectures and writeshops, equipping participants with specialized skills across core areas of journalism. Inday Espina-Varona, an award-winning journalist and the former head of Regions, Rappler, led the session on feature writing, guiding students in crafting meaningful and human-centered narratives. Andre Julian Alpay III, an experienced cartoonist, introduced the craft of editorial cartooning, emphasizing the power of visuals in commentary and critique. Meanwhile, Ma'am Nanette L. Guadalquiver, the Bacolod bureau chief of the Philippine News Agency and former editor-in-chief of SunStar Bacolod, handled newswriting and photojournalism, underscoring storytelling that goes beyond routine coverage, while Ma'am Joyce Panares, the managing editor of Manila Standard, and a senior lecturer of the UP College of Media and Communication, trained participants in layouting, focusing on design principles that establish authority and credibility in publication outputs. Their combined expertise provided participants with both foundational knowledge and applied newsroom skills.
The activity was organized by The Cenphilian Main Campus headed by Publication Adviser, Dr. Josephine Asuncion R. Emoy, in partnership with HBONI and 99.7 Brigada News FM - Kabankalan, represented by Sir Reymund Titong, further strengthening collaboration between academic and media institutions in advancing campus journalism.
Also present at the host venue, CPSU Main Campus Accreditation Center were the TCP Editor-in-Chief Ms. Abijah Deogracias, Assistant Adviser Ma'am Mary Germi G. Calalas, and respresentatives from the HBONI.
Moving forward, participants are expected to translate their learning into stronger, more responsive campus publications producing timely, relevant, and ethically grounded content across platforms. The training sets the tone for a more active and coordinated TCP network, where student journalists take on greater responsibility in shaping narratives within their respective campuses, fostering informed communities, and upholding the standards of credible and impactful journalism.
