𝐓𝐨𝐩𝐢𝐜: 𝐆𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐧 𝐅𝐚𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐖𝐢𝐬𝐝𝐨𝐦

By nature, infants long for pure milk. This is necessary because when an infant does not receive the milk he needs, his mother cannot expect him to grow healthy and strong. Through pure milk, infants receive the exact nutrients their bodies need. It is their essential nourishment and, in many ways, their means of survival during the first stage of life. In comparison, as Christians, we should likewise long for the Word of God. Ultimately, God’s Word is the one and only way for believers to grow spiritually and deepen their love relationship with their Lord.

Think back to when you first became a Christian. How did you survive? Were you able to overcome life’s challenges, difficulties, and trials by depending on the Word of God? Or did you try to face them without it? The reality is that we cannot truly survive this cruel world without the Word of God in our lives. Why, then, should we long for His Word?

First, we should long for the Word of God because it is essential for our spiritual survival. As believers in Christ, we need the truth of God’s Word to continually remind us that all we need is Christ. He alone bore the penalty for our sins and is our only hope of salvation. Without Him, we have no true spiritual life.

Second, we should long for the Word of God because it enables us to grow in knowing our great Lord. If we value a person, we deeply desire to know that person more. We do not settle for knowing only the least details about him. Instead, we long to hear more, learn more, and know him more deeply. It is the same with our relationship with Christ. J. C. Ryle described this desire in the life of a true Christian:
“If we love a person, we like to think about him. If we love a person, we like to hear about him. If we love a person, we like to read about him. If we love a person, we like to please him. If we love a person, we like his friends. If we love a person, we are jealous about his name and honor. If we love a person, we like to talk to him. If we love a person, we like to be always with him. Well, it is just so between a true Christian and Christ.”

If we truly love Christ, then we should desire to know Him more. We should want to hear about Him, read about Him, talk to Him, please Him, and spend time with Him. And one of the greatest ways God has given us to know Him is through His Word.

Therefore, long for the Word of God as an infant longs for pure milk. Consider Scripture not as something optional in your spiritual life, but as your ultimate spiritual need. Just as an infant needs milk to grow physically, we need the Word of God to grow spiritually.

Long for His Word. Read it. Meditate on it. Treasure it. Live by it.
For if we truly love Christ, we should long to know Him more.
