OMNIANA, the official student publication of Notre Dame of Marbel University (NDMU), stands in solidarity with the students, faculty, staff, and families of Ateneo de Zamboanga University (ADZU) following the reported shooting incident within its campus.
It has always taken a village to raise a child. Unfortunately, it also takes a village to fail one.
In times like these, we are reminded that protecting young people goes beyond discipline and education. It means listening, guiding, and making them feel seen, heard, and loved. Talk to children as though they are the wisest and kindest people they can become, for who they believe they are shapes who they may become.
But care must extend beyond the home. Schools are entrusted with young lives and must remain havens for higher learningโnot places where students fear for their safety. Campus security, emergency protocols, and systems for preventing violence must be treated as fundamental responsibilities, not afterthoughts.
Educational institutions must also recognize that safety is more than gates, guards, and surveillance. It is the presence of systems that allow students to speak when something is wrong, seek help without fear, and be taken seriously when they do. A safe campus is one where prevention is proactive, concerns are addressed before they escalate, and every member of the community understands that protecting one another is a shared responsibility.
OMNIANA extends its deepest condolences to those affected by this tragedy and calls for a thorough, impartial, and transparent investigation. We likewise urge the public to refrain from misinformation, speculation, and unverified claims.
May our schools remain places where minds are challenged, futures are built, and lives are protected.
