𝐃𝐄𝐒 𝐇𝐎𝐋𝐃𝐒 𝐎𝐑𝐈𝐄𝐍𝐓𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍 𝐅𝐎𝐑 𝐅𝐈𝐑𝐒𝐓 𝐘𝐄𝐀𝐑𝐒, 𝐒𝐇𝐈𝐅𝐓𝐄𝐄𝐒, 𝐀𝐍𝐃 𝐓𝐑𝐀𝐍𝐒𝐅𝐄𝐑𝐄𝐄𝐒

Last Wednesday, July 22, 2026, the Department of Environmental Science held an insightful orientation for First Years, Shiftees, and Transferees at the CAS Little Theater.

After a cordial welcoming from Mrs. Janice P. Balangen set the tone and expectations for the morning's event, the students got to meet all of the faculty members of the Department of Environmental Science.

Mrs. Joyce N. Paing went on to discuss Benguet State University's Vision, Mission, Goals, and Objectives and how the BS Environmental Science Program Objectives aligns with it. Guiding students on how to maneuver their stay in the university, Mrs. Balangen discussed the specifics of the BSES Retention Policy.

Dr. Romeo A. Gomez, Jr. then went on to cover the history of the university's BSES Program as one of its pioneers, then providing an overview of the BSES Curriculum and the learnings expected for the major subjects. Also as part of the BSES Curriculum, Mrs. Desieree A. De Aro's discussion delved deeper into the BSES Internship, highlighting the diverse learnings and experiences gained by previous batches.

To give the students a more compelling reason to pursue their BSES study, Mr. Aldrin V. Baniaga went over the different career paths available for a BSES graduate, ending by highlighting that the demand for BSES graduates are now growing across different sectors.

Mr. Zaimon A. Anongos presented the Young Environmentalists' Society, the Recognized Student Organization of BSES students in the university, and talked about the different co-curricular and extracurricular activities of the organization that will create a fulfilling experience for BSES students.

After an open forum where the students were allowed to ask questions, the program rounded out with Mrs. Paing leaving an inspirational speech. With much laughter and applause shared during the learning session, the Department of Environmental Science once again welcomes these fresh faces in the university.

To our beloved first years, welcome to the Department of Environmental Science of Benguet State University! To equip you with the needed knowledge for a smooth college life, our department has prepared this First Year Orientation just for you.

Here you will learn a lot about the BSES program, and what comes after your stay in the university. You will also get to know not just your faculty members, but also the community that you will spend the next four years with.

As the commemoration of the Philippine Environmental Month concludes, the Department of Environmental Science, from the College of Natural Sciences of Benguet State University, reaffirms its commitment to environmental stewardship that is responsive to pressing environmental challenges.

In the Environmental Performance Index (EPI) published by Yale (Block, Emerson, Esty, de Sherbinin, & Wendling et al., 2024), the Philippines ranked 169th out of 180 countries. The EPI evaluates the state of sustainability using 58 performance indicators across 11 issue categories, which then compares the actual state of each country to established environmental policy targets. In summary, the Philippines as a country has a lot more to work on regarding environmental policy and its implementation.

In the Benguet Provincial Profile from the National Disaster Preparedness Baseline Assessments (Pacific Disaster Center, 2021), the province of Benguet is reported to encounter a Very Low Multi-Hazard Risk, ranking 68 of 84 evaluated provinces. While having a low risk evaluation, the report had a few recommendations which included reducing environmental stress, particularly by increasing forest cover, decreasing barren land, and practicing sustainable agriculture.

The Department of Environmental Science of BSU-CNS has participated and will continue to participate in environmental endeavors by pursuing responsive, inclusive, and grassroots-oriented instruction, extension, and research.

Nurturing Tomorrow: BSES interns Champion Eco-stewardship for the Philippine Environment Month 2026
Embracing their roles as future custodians of the planet, the BSES interns participated in a series of multi-faceted environmental initiatives designed to make a tangible difference. These activities were executed in close partnership with various government and non-governmental organizations. Integrated seamlessly into their curriculum, these collaborative efforts allowed the students to gain invaluable professional experience while fostering strong institutional networks.
By uniting academic passion with institutional support, these future environmental scientists proved that youth-led action is a powerful force in safeguarding the country’s natural heritage. As the Philippines Environment Month comes to a close, the work of the BSES interns serves as an inspiring reminder that eco-stewardship is not just a monthly theme but a lifelong commitment.
