The 37th National Statistics Month opening ceremony, held on October 19, 2026 at the CASAn Quadrangle, featured a series of activities that brought the celebration to life. The program began with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, followed by an introduction to the exhibits prepared by the different year levels. Attendees also witnessed the NSM Jingle Competition, where participating teams presented their entries, with icebreaker games held between program segments.

The opening ceremony marked one of the highlights of this year's NSM activities, with more opportunities to engage with statistics and its applications continuing throughout October.

Samahang Statistika cordially invites the BSU community to visit the exhibits prepared by our Statistics students in celebration of the 37th National Statistics Month.

Explore four distinct takes on sustainable tourism and the role of statistics in shaping it. The first years present โ€œBiyaheng Lahat,โ€ an interactive exhibit on making tourism accessible to everyone. The second years feature โ€œBagyong Katatagan,โ€ which explores how destinations can prepare for and recover from natural disasters. The third years present โ€œPiso at Kalikasan,โ€ highlighting the balance between tourism spending and environmental impact. Meanwhile, the fourth years take visitors into the future through โ€œTuklas AI,โ€ a technology-driven exhibit featuring predictive models and tourism forecasts.

Each exhibit offers a different way to engage with the year's theme, โ€œTuklas Pilipinas: Statistics as Beacon Towards Inclusive, Resilient, and Sustainable Tourism,โ€ through interactive activities, visual presentations, and practical applications of statistical concepts.

We encourage students, faculty, and other members of the university community to drop by, explore the exhibits, and engage with the ideas our students have developed. Come see how statistics connects with the places we visit, the communities we support, and the future of Philippine tourism. ๐Ÿ’™

For the third day, the focus shifted from discussing data cleaning to putting it into practice. Through a hands-on session, members explored the process of examining and preparing datasets, gaining practical experience with a step that must be addressed before proceeding with statistical analysis.

Data cleaning is an important part of working with research data, as the quality and organization of a dataset affect the work that follows. Familiarity with this process helps members recognize that statistical services involve more than running tests or generating results; they also require careful preparation and examination of the data itself. The session provided members with an opportunity to apply their understanding of data cleaning in a more practical setting.

This 37th National Statistics Month, we celebrate 'Tuklas Pilipinas' with a spirit of discovery that reminds us to keep exploring and seeking what lies beyond what we already know. With statistics as our beacon, let's trace back where it all started, to the minds who lit the way.

Throughout the month, we'll be featuring the people whose ideas became the tools we now use every day, each post with a quick look at what they contributed.

๐Ÿ“Œ Meet today's luminary:
๐‰๐š๐ง๐ž๐ญ ๐๐จ๐ซ๐ฐ๐จ๐จ๐ (1923โ€“2015)

American economist and statistician Janet Norwood served as Commissioner of the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) from 1979 to 1991. During her term, she improved the Consumer Price Index, the measure behind how we track the rising cost of living, and introduced multifactor productivity measures that offered a fuller picture of economic growth. She saved important surveys from being cut, strengthened partnerships between federal and state data agencies, and established a survey methods research lab to keep improving how data is collected. She also served as president of the American Statistical Association. Most notably, she protected the scientific independence of the BLS from political influence, showing that trustworthy statistics depend on the integrity of the people who produce them.
