RED DEVIL

The little fire ant has a reputation for pushing out native wildlife and raising hell on farms. Now it has turned up in Iligan, the first documented record of the invasive species in the Philippines.

MSU-IIT researchers poked around and found it in two communities in Barangay Rogongon.

It has crossed oceans and conquered islands, from the Americas through Africa to the Pacific.

The document below shows that the 1st Luzon Conference on Yam Production, Processing, and Market Promotion was held on November 26-28, 2003, more than 20 years ago, at the Benguet State University-Northern Philippines Root Crops Research and Training Center (NPRCRTC). Our researchers at the BSU's first and oldest R&D Center have recognized the potential of this indigenous crop in the Philippines long before it became a craze. Currently, this center produces tissue-culture-derived planting materials (although it takes quite a while to produce bulk volumes of tubers for distribution). They continue to innovate, trying aeroponics for purple yam as well, even as they have been successful with aeroponics for potato. They have trained many farmers and continue to train more farmers and enthusiasts on greater (purple) yam minisett production.

Not only that, BSU's Frozen Ube Halaya (produced without any preservatives) is a bestseller at the BSU Marketing Center, being produced by the BSU's Food Processing Center for more than 20 years. Many other breads with purple yam are being produced by the BSU Bakery.

This year, BSU hopes to host the 2nd Luzon Conference on Yam Production, Processing, and Market Promotion, possibly about the same dates in November 2026. It will coincide with the Benguet Adivay Celebration; BSU looks forward to "adivay"ing with those who participated in that historic first conference.

Here's a way, developed by researchers at BSU-NPRCRTC for local farmers.

𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘁𝗿𝘆 𝗶𝘁?
✅𝗠𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗬𝗶𝗲𝗹𝗱 𝗜𝗻𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲: In pilot tests, farmers saw their yield weight jump from 336g (1 tuber/hill) to a staggering 859g per hill (2-3 tubers/hill)!
✅𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆: For a small 500 m2 area, this technique can generate a net financial benefit of Php19,400 to Php34,950.
✅𝗦𝗼𝗹𝘃𝗲 𝗦𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝗦𝗵𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲𝘀: Purple yams are in high demand for ice cream, breads, and noodles. This technology helps you produce your own high-quality planting materials to meet that demand.

𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗲'𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀:
1. 𝗦𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝗦𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Start with clean, disease-free tubers.
2. 𝗠𝗶𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗲𝘁𝘁 𝗖𝘂𝘁𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴: Once sprouted, cut tubers into 2x2x2 inch pieces (60-150 grams).
3. 𝗖𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴: Air-dry or dust with wood ash to prevent rotting.
4. 𝗣𝗿𝗲-𝗿𝗼𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴: Arrange in boxes and cover with moist sacks or coconut coir for 30 to 45 days before planting.
