Historical accounts show that the Igorot indigenous communities of Benguet have long cultivated yams (ube) and camote as staple foods. These crops were practical to grow because they required only clearing the landโno plowing or digging was needed.
According to the Northern Philippines Root Crops Research and Training Center (NPRCRTC), Benguet has at least 17 locally named Ube varieties, with 12 traditionally cultivated by the Ibaloy and 1 by the Kankana-ey.

๐ ๐๐ถ๐๐ฐ๐ผ๐ป๐ด โ Round tuber with thick skin; white-yellow or orange flesh.
๐ ๐ฆ๐ต๐ถ๐ต๐ฒ๐ ๐ช๐ต๐ถ๐๐ฒ โ Deep-rooted with large, elongated tubers and white flesh.
๐ ๐ฆ๐ต๐ถ๐ต๐ฒ๐ ๐ฉ๐ถ๐ผ๐น๐ฒ๐ โ Similar to Shihet White but with deep violet flesh.
๐ ๐๐ถ๐บ๐ฑ๐ถ๐บ๐ฎ ๐ช๐ต๐ถ๐๐ฒ โ Flattened tubers with white to orange flesh; stores well and is ideal for dried chips.
๐ ๐๐ถ๐บ๐ฑ๐ถ๐บ๐ฎ ๐ฉ๐ถ๐ผ๐น๐ฒ๐ โ Light purple and white flesh; long storage life and good for dried chips.
๐ ๐ ๐ฎ๐ท๐ฎ๐/๐ ๐ฎ๐ฑ๐ท๐ฎ๐ โ Large, white-fleshed tubers; sticky and itchy sap.
๐ ๐ ๐ฎ๐๐ฏ๐ฒ โ Large, elongated, deep purple tubers; sweet, mealy, and high-yielding.
๐ ๐ฃ๐ฎ๐ฑ๐ถ๐ต๐ผ๐ โ Small white tubers with a sweet, sticky texture.
๐ ๐ฃ๐ฎ๐ฑ๐ถ๐ป๐๐ฒ โ Branching tubers with violet flesh.
๐ ๐ฆ๐ฎ๐บ๐ฝ๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ผ โ Round, deep purple, aromatic, mealy, and high-yielding.
๐ ๐ง๐๐ป๐ด๐ธ๐ผ๐น โ Large, well-shaped tubers with light to deep purple flesh; known for its excellent taste.
๐ ๐ง๐๐๐ถ๐ฟ๐ฎ๐ป/๐ง๐ผ๐ต๐ถ๐ฟ๐ฎ๐ป โ Round tubers with deep purple flesh; mealy texture, though overmature tubers may develop a hard center.
๐ ๐จ๐น๐ฎ๐ป๐ด โ White-fleshed variety with large vines; requires a trellis, matures in one year, and is not sweet.
These native Ube varieties reflect Benguet's rich agricultural heritage and the traditional knowledge of its indigenous communities. Notably, many of these traditional varieties cultivated are purple, flattened, and irregularly shaped.
