BaSC Strengthens Research and Innovation Capacity through MINSUPALA-IRDC Training

As a member institution of the Mindanao Sulu Palawan–Innovative Research and Development Consortium (MinSuPala-IRDC), Basilan State College (BaSC) participated in the Capacity-Building Training on Indigenous Product Innovation, Intellectual Property Protection, Technology Transfer, and Scientific Communication held on August 14–19, 2026, hosted by Mindanao State University–Tawi-Tawi College of Technology and Oceanography (MSU-TCTO).

Representing BaSC were Oscar S. Francisco, Jr., Project Leader; Ms. Jessiebe C. Echin, Science Research Assistant; Ms. Cynelle Ann Senturias, Project Technical Assistant; and Ms. Sitti Arna Jagoh, Project Staff.

The capacity-building activity gathered researchers, project personnel, faculty members, and representatives from MinSuPala-IRDC member institutions to strengthen competencies needed to transform research and indigenous resources into innovative and value-added products.

Sessions and workshops focused on indigenous crop and fish product innovation, value-adding and processing, intellectual property protection, technology transfer, scientific communication, and public speaking. The activity provided participants with practical knowledge and approaches that can be applied in developing, protecting, communicating, and transferring research-based technologies and products.

BaSC’s participation supports the implementation of the MinSuPala-IRDC project on Product Development and Commercialization of Indigenous Crop and Fish Products. Through the project, the College seeks to contribute to the development of locally relevant products and technologies while creating opportunities to utilize Basilan’s indigenous resources and local knowledge through research and innovation.

The activity also provided a platform for BaSC to strengthen its collaboration with fellow consortium members and partner institutions from Mindanao, Sulu, and Palawan, particularly in areas of research, product development, intellectual property, and technology transfer.

BaSC acknowledges MinSuPala-IRDC, MSU-TCTO, the resource persons, facilitators, consortium members, and partner institutions for facilitating the training and providing opportunities for knowledge sharing and institutional collaboration.

Through its active involvement in MinSuPala-IRDC, Basilan State College continues to strengthen its research and innovation capabilities and advance initiatives that translate locally generated knowledge and resources into meaningful products and technologies for communities.

CA Faculty Joins Smart Agriculture Forum; BaSC Receives DOST-SARAI Recognition

Mr. Renante Villalon, faculty member of the College of Agriculture, participated in the “Smart Agriculture for Sustainable Development: Forum on Innovative and Climate-Resilient Agriculture Technologies” on August 13, 2026, in Dipolog City, Zamboanga del Norte.

The forum featured smart and climate-resilient agricultural technologies, including agricultural robotics, automated irrigation and biofertilizer application, biological pest control, and pest and disease detection technologies.

During the activity, Basilan State College (BaSC) received a Plaque of Recognition from DOST Zamboanga Peninsula through Project SARAI CeNTRO for its valuable partnership and support in the successful implementation of the DOST-SARAI Zamboanga Peninsula Regional Hub.

The participation and recognition highlight BaSC’s continuing commitment to strengthening partnerships and advancing innovative and sustainable agriculture.

CA Students Begin 13-Session Rice Farmers Field School

Seventeen (17) students from the Basilan State College – College of Agriculture officially commenced their participation in the 2026 Rice Farmers Field School, organized by the City Agriculture Office of Isabela City, through the Opening Program and Session 1.

The Rice Farmers Field School is a 13-session season-long training program designed to equip participants with both theoretical knowledge and hands-on experience in rice production. During the opening session, students participated in the registration, opening program, expectation setting, pre-test, and discussions on the current rice industry situation, laying the foundation for the succeeding technical and field-based sessions.

Through this collaborative initiative, the College of Agriculture continues to provide experiential learning opportunities that bridge classroom instruction with real-world agricultural practices, preparing future agriculturists with the competencies needed to support sustainable and productive rice farming.

CA Faculty Serve as Resource Persons in Halal Livestock Trainings

Faculty members from the College of Agriculture (CA), Basilan State College (BaSC) served as resource persons during the Training on Halal Cattle Production and Management, Halal Goat Production and Management, and Training on Halal Feeds Production and Formulation organized by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Agrarian Reform (MAFAR)–Basilan, Agriculture Division. The training was conducted in the municipalities of Maluso and Lantawan, Basilan on July 7–8 and July 14–15, 2026.

Representing the College of Agriculture, Oscar S. Francisco, Jr. and Prince Ralph D. Sotto delivered technical lectures on livestock production and management practices, focusing on cattle and goat production, animal nutrition, health management, feed formulation, and practical management strategies to improve livestock productivity and promote sustainable production systems.

The Halal aspects of livestock production were discussed by MAFAR Agriculture Division Chief Datu Fadh Jaljalis, who emphasized the principles, standards, and requirements necessary to ensure halal compliance in cattle, goat, and feed production.

The training gathered cattle and goat raisers, poultry and livestock farmers, and other agricultural stakeholders, equipping them with practical knowledge and skills to enhance livestock productivity while supporting the development of a sustainable and halal-compliant livestock industry in Basilan.

PCA and BaSC Forge Partnership for Coconut Development

Basilan State College (BaSC) and the Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA) formally commenced their partnership for the implementation of the Coconut Farmers and Industry Development Plan (CFIDP) - Coconut Hybridization Project (OPV Parental Palms) and the Massive Coconut Planting Program (MCPP). The collaboration marks a significant milestone in promoting sustainable coconut development and improving the productivity and livelihood of coconut farmers in Basilan.

As part of the implementation of the partnership, the first tranche of project cheques was formally handed over by PCA Basilan Division Chief Mr. Diosdado Espinosa Jr. and Senior Agriculturist Mr. Lemuel Soriano to BaSC College President Dr. Haipa Abdurahim-Salain. The turnover was witnessed by the BaSC's Finance Division and Mr. Oscar S. Francisco, Jr. from the College of Agriculture.

Through this partnership, PCA and BaSC reaffirm their shared commitment to implementing programs that support coconut nursery establishment, quality planting material production, and the sustainable growth of the coconut industry for the benefit of coconut farmers and communities in Basilan.

BS Agriculture Students Complete 240-Hour Internship Program

The BS Agriculture students majoring in Crop Science successfully completed their 240-hour Internship Program at the MAFAR Agriculture Division, LGU Isabela City Agriculture Office, and the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist.

Through the internship, the students gained valuable hands-on experience in agricultural extension services, crop production activities, field monitoring, farmers’ engagement, and office operations. The program allowed them to apply their classroom knowledge in actual agricultural settings while developing professionalism, teamwork, and practical skills essential for future agriculturists.

The College of Agriculture extends its sincere appreciation to the partner agencies for their support and commitment in helping shape competent and service-oriented agricultural graduates.

Where Are They Now? | Alumni Feature Stories

From the classrooms and field laboratories of the College of Agriculture to the frontlines of agricultural extension and community development - proud CA alumni Karramchan Salim (Class of 2022), Ar-Rafi Hadjala (2025) and Thithany Lim (2018) became part of the implementation team of the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist for the MAGTANAH Program in Basilan.

Their involvement in the MAGTANAH Program reflects the important role of young agriculturists in advancing food production, farmer education, and sustainable agricultural development in the province.
