ANTIBIOTIC SUSCEPTIBILITY TESTING

On October 5, the Bachelor of Science in Biology (BS Bio) students conducted an Antibiotic Susceptibility Test (AST) using Mueller–Hinton agar to examine the response of bacterial isolates to selected antibiotics. Using throat and nasal samples as sources of inoculum, the students observed bacterial growth and measured the zones of inhibition surrounding selected antibiotics, including Penicillin, Augmentin, Amoxicillin, and Cefalexin. These measurements help determine whether the tested bacterial isolates are susceptible or resistant to particular antibiotics, based on established interpretive standards.

The activity also provided an opportunity to explore the suspected presence of Staphylococcus aureus or other staphylococcal species, emphasizing the importance of proper laboratory procedures, careful observation, and accurate interpretation in microbiological investigations.

More than a laboratory exercise, this experience strengthened the students’ understanding of antimicrobial susceptibility testing and its role in microbiology, clinical laboratory practice, and the broader fight against antimicrobial resistance.

A CLOSER LOOK AT LIFE: BS BIOLOGY DISSECTION ACTIVITY

Learning biology goes beyond books and lectures, it comes alive through hands-on exploration.

Today, with the supervision of Prof. Jerold Francisco, the Bachelor of Science in Biology (BS Bio) students engaged in a dissection activity that provided an opportunity to explore biological structures, examine anatomical features, and gain a deeper understanding of the complexity of living organisms. Through careful observation, practical investigation, and scientific inquiry, students strengthened their laboratory skills, applied their theoretical knowledge, and developed a greater appreciation for the intricate designs and functions found in nature. More than just a laboratory exercise, this activity highlighted the importance of precision, critical thinking, and responsible scientific practice in the study of life. Because in Biology, every structure tells a story, every observation leads to discovery, and every experiment brings us one step closer to understanding life.

Science in action, curiosity in motion, and future biologists at work!

ᴡʜᴏ ᴛᴇɴᴅ ᴛʜᴇ ʀᴏᴏᴛꜱ, ɴᴜʀᴛᴜʀᴇ ᴛʜᴇ ʙʟᴏᴏᴍ, ᴀɴᴅ ᴋᴇᴇᴘ ᴛʜᴇ ʜɪᴠᴇ ᴀʟɪᴠᴇ ║
"𝑯𝒊𝒔𝒕𝒐𝒓𝒚 𝒉𝒂𝒔 𝒊𝒕𝒔 𝒆𝒚𝒆𝒔 𝒐𝒏 𝒚𝒐𝒖."

A hive does not survive by honey alone.

It flourishes by the patient hands that tend its chambers, by the watchful eyes that guard what has been entrusted to them, and by those who know that growth is seldom loud.

And so, on this Teachers’ Day, HIBE pays tribute to the keepers of our hive.

To our instructors, who do far more than fill the pages of our notebooks; you cultivate curiosity where there was once uncertainty, give structure to difficult questions, and tended through awkward beginnings, tangled thoughts, and the innumerable “Ma’am/Sir, can you explain that again?” moments.

Like beekeepers of a living garden, you know that not every seed blooms at the same pace. Some require sunlight. Others need rain. Some take their sweet time before finally opening.

The honey may be ours to make, but the flowers were first shown to us by you. To the mentors, educators, professors, and guides who have helped our hive grow.
Thank you for keeping the garden green, the hive warm, and our minds ever working.

Happy Teachers’ Day, from the HIBE and may everything you have nurtured continue to flower long after the lesson has ended.

🔬 1, 2, 3, GO—kanya-kanya na ng bacteria!

Today’s survival kit: sterile swab, agar plates, gloves, at dasal na walang contamination 🙏

4th Year Biology students put their microbiology skills to the test—from collecting nose and throat specimens to inoculating them onto Mannitol Salt Agar and MacConkey Agar.

Lahat may swab. Lahat may sample. Lahat may kaba. 💀

And while the goal was to detect Staphylococcus and Streptococcus, one thing was also detected: their ability to panic over the tiniest possibility of contamination. 😭

Kaya steady hands, clean technique, at walang “bahala na si Batman” sa laboratory. 🙁

Swab. Streak. Incubate. Observe. Sana tama lahat. 🧫🙏
